The increasing use of wireless networks has necessitated the development of a wireless networking infrastructure that supports quality of service (QoS) for multimedia communications. Proxy servers are gaining prominence in facilitating QoS assurance and intelligent resource allocation for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile users. We describe the overall QoS architecture and implement a number of key QoS functions, including bandwidth allocation and synchronization. In this architecture, admission control is exercised to ensure the long-term availability of resources to mobile clients, where the resources include bandwidth for supporting required presentation rates and buffer for synchronizing media streams. Bandwidth allocation is implemented in Linux Traffic Control using Stochastic Fairness Queueing and Token Bucket Filter disciplines to provide bandwidth guarantees for the multimedia connections. An adaptive synchronization technique is also implemented in the proxy to synchronize multiple streams originating from different sources before transmitting them to the clients for presentation. Finally, a number of quality adaptation strategies that accommodate the diverse requirements and capabilities of clients are described.

In this paper we present an algorithm for flow assignment in active nomadic computation. We present the algorithm with a novel active application - a cognizant video streaming mechanism which is capable of negotiating local network state based rate and let the video propagate over extreme network with highly asymmetric link and node capacities. As a platform the stream uses the computing power of a quasi-active network. As a result the passing video stream appears as a self-organizing stream, which automatically senses the network asymmetry and adapts as the packets diffuse via the active subnet.

Optimal multicast smoothing of streaming video over the Internet

A set of applications such as Internet video broadcasts, corporate telecasts, and distance learning require the simultaneous streaming of video to a large population of viewers across the Internet. The high bandwidth, requirements and the multitimescale burstiness of compressed video make it a challenging problem to provision network resources for streaming multimedia. For such applications to become affordable and ubiquitous, it is necessary to develop scalable techniques to efficiently stream video to a large number of disparate clients across a heterogeneous internet. In this paper, we propose to multicast smoothed video over an application-level overlay network of proxies, and to differentially cache the video at the intermediate nodes (proxies) in the distribution tree, in order to reduce the network bandwidth requirements of video dissemination. We formulate the multicast smoothing problem as an optimization problem, and develop an algorithm for computing the set of transmission schedules for the tree that minimize the peak rate and rate variability, given buffer constraints at different nodes in the tree. We also develop an algorithm to compute the minimum buffer allocation in the entire tree, such that feasible transmission to all the clients is possible, when the tree has heterogeneous rate constraints. We show through trace-driven simulations that substantial benefits are possible from multicast smoothing and differential caching, and that these gains can be realized even with modest proxy caches.

With the advent of wireless and mobile networks and the growing number of mobile users using the system, multimedia services are expected to dominate the design of the next generation of wireless systems. Our motivation in this paper is to develop a scheme that would support a large number of users as well as their demands, while eliminating to a large extent the side effects of the inherent protocols used in our scheme. We propose a novel hybrid medium access control (MAC) scheme, based on the theoretical 'near-perfect' CDMA using W-CDMA/SFH/OFDM and an SDM component to support sector-based multimedia services. We also present a scheduling mechanism to support the hybrid algorithm. In order to increase the number of users that can be supported by the system and thereby reducing the call-blocking factor as much as possible, we have made use of the Dynamic Packet Assignment algorithm. In this paper, we present our hybrid MAC protocol, its implementation and the simulation experiments we have carried out to evaluate its performance.

Modelling and analysing for multimedia applications in a mobile network, with real-time behaviour taken into consideration, is still a subject of much research. Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) is well known formalisms used to represent and analyse communication and computer systems. However, it does not have enough expressive power to model timing behaviours of multimedia applications in a mobile network. To address this limitation, we develop quality of services based GSPN, which is capable of doing so. The extension offers the promise of providing real-time system predictability for systems characterised by substantial stochastic behaviour. With this model we model and analyse the handover and admission control schemes in the different multimedia traffic environments. Our result, thereby, provide the optimal performance achievable for these schemes under the real-time constraints in the given setting of design parameters. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

multimedia streaming applications are becoming increasingly popular on the Internet. Most of these applications do not share the available bandwidth fairly with applications built on TCP, such as webb rowsers, FTP- or email-clients. The Internet community strongly fears UDP-based multimedia applications, because the UDP traffic could lead to a congestion collapse and starvation of TCP traffic. For this reason, TCP-friendly protocols are being developed that behave fairly with respect to co-existent TCP flows. In this paper, we propose a new TCPfriendly protocol, called Smart RTP(SRTP), for multimedia streaming. Our proposed protocol has two salient features. One is TCP-friendliness and the other is rate smoothness. As a result, the end-to-end quality of service (QoS) is improved. The evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Provision of Video-on-Demand (VoD) services requires significant network bandwidth and server capacity for sustained periods of time. Aggregation schemes can be used to increase the supported customer population under the constraints on these resources, but due to system behavioral complexity, these schemes are difficult to model in the large scale. We present a time-domain analysis modeling technique that permits analysis of these systems with reasonable performance. We show that our analysis is analogous to finding the time response of linear systems using the well known convolution theorem. We model two aggregation schemes using this technique: (1) batching by time-out and (2) Adaptive Piggybacking employing Snapshot-RSMA. Both schemes are server-based aggregation schemes and their importance increases with the evolution of new computing paradigms such as pervasive computing, in which streaming media are anticipated, yet connectivity bandwidth is scarce. Since such schemes do not assume any end-client capacity requirements, they are the logical candidates for enabling efficient VoD service in a pervasive computing environment. We delineate the requirements of the VoD system under which this modeling technique can be employed and also propose a sampling methodology which gives good estimation results when modeling becomes mathematically too complex.

The basic philosophy of personal communication services is to provide user-to-user. location independent communication services. The emerging group communication wireless applications. such as multipoint data dissemination and Multiparty conferencing tools have made the design and development of efficient multicast techniques in mobile ad-hoc networking environments a necessity and not just a desire. Multicast protocols in mobile ad-hoc networks have been an area of active research for the past couple of years. This paper summarizes the activities and recent advances in this work-in-progress area by identifying the main issues and challenges that multicast protocols are facing in mobile ad-hoc networking environments, and by surveying several existing multicasting protocols. This article presents a classification of the current multicast protocols, discusses the functionality of the individual existing protocols, and provides a qualitative comparison of their characteristics according to several distinct features and performance parameters. Furthermore, since many of the additional issues and constraints associated with the mobile ad-hoc networks are due, to a large extent, to the attribute of user mobility. we also present an overview of research and development efforts in the area of group mobility modeling in mobile ad-hoc networks. Low-power high-performance adaptive computing architectures for multimedia processing

The demand for higher computing power and thus more onchip computing resources is ever increasing. The size of on-chip cache memory has also been consistently increasing. To efficiently utilize silicon real-estate on the chip, a part of L1 data cache is designed as a Reconfigurable Functional Cache (RFC), that can be configured to perform a selective core function in the media application whenever higher computing capability is required. The idea of Adaptive Balanced computing architecture was developed, where the RFC module is used as a coprocessor controlled by main processor. Initial results have proved that ABC architecture provides speedups ranging from 1.04x to 5.0x for various media applications. In this paper, we address the impact of RFC on cache access time and energy dissipation. We show that reduced number of cache accesses and lesser utilization of other on-chip resources will result in energy savings of up to 60% for MPEG decoding, and in the range of 10% to 20% for various other multimedia applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
