The demand for higher computing power and thus more onchip computing resources is ever increasing. The size of on-chip cache memory has also been consistently increasing. To efficiently utilize silicon real-estate on the chip, a part of L1 data cache is designed as a Reconfigurable Functional Cache (RFC), that can be configured to perform a selective core function in the media application whenever higher computing capability is required. The idea of Adaptive Balanced computing architecture was developed, where the RFC module is used as a coprocessor controlled by main processor. Initial results have proved that ABC architecture provides speedups ranging from 1.04x to 5.0x for various media applications. In this paper, we address the impact of RFC on cache access time and energy dissipation. We show that reduced number of cache accesses and lesser utilization of other on-chip resources will result in energy savings of up to 60% for MPEG decoding, and in the range of 10% to 20% for various other multimedia applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The provisioning of multimedia services with guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS) is currently an important research issue in computer engineering, especially in the networking and information management areas. In this paper, we concentrate on the QoS-based provisioning of discovery and delivery services of multimedia resources in the educational application domain. We present a generic model for QoS-aware information management systems, able to support guarantee of the QoS in search and delivery of information objects over a network infrastructure (such as the Internet or an inter-organizations network). The model identifies actors and components involved, and their role. The metadata models we analyse are specialized for the education domain. For this application domain, we also propose QoS extensions to standard metadata models for profiling users, information services and resources, capable of supporting learning resources discovery and personalized delivery with QoS guarantee. It is a challenging task to develop a high quality and secure multimedia service for mobile terminals used in the ubiquitous computing environment. One of the issues is the resource limitation of mobile terminals. We present a multimedia service composition scheme for sharing computer and communication resources by using terminals to compensate for this resource limitation. The proposed scheme is based on user authentication, service access control, and the multi-agent-based adaptive QoS control framework that we developed. We also propose a novel access mode control based on the trustworthiness of users and extension of the multi-agent-based adaptive QoS control framework to many users. Focusing on the home network as a typical ubiquitous network, we implement a prototype testbed system and show experimental results for the multimedia service composition.

Ubiquitous computing focusing on users and tasks instead of devices and singular applications is an attractive vision for the future. The idea of nomadic, mobile users in particular poses new challenges for hardware and software. Mobile devices provide vastly different presentation capabilities and need to integrate into heterogeneous environments. Network bandwidth is far from being constant and services may be available only when online. This paper presents MUNDO, an infrastructure for ubiquitous computing that addresses these challenges. The infrastructure is intended to be non-monolithic with its parts supporting mobile computing using multi-modal user interfaces, mobile data delivery, and ad-hoc communication and networking.

Delivering real-time surveillance services to handheld devices over the Internet is an interesting application in mobile environments. Developing such system necessitates tackling considerable design challenges including device shortcomings, platform heterogeneity and bandwidth limitation. In this paper we present a Java-based approach for developing a mobile surveillance system which allows PDA users to overcome these challenges. This approach applies emerging Java technologies including J2ME, RMI, and JMF for mobile computing, handheld devices, distributed computing, and multimedia computing. To achieve the thin-client goal in the post-PC era, a textual-based application-level communication protocol is also designed. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our design approach via actual experimentations on the Palm PDA. With the advent of J2ME standardization, our system is expected to be generically applicable to various handheld and mobile devices.

A Video-on-Demand (VoD) service offers a large selection of videos from which customers can choose. Designers of VoD systems strive to achieve low access latency for customers. One approach that has been investigated by several researchers allows the server to batch clients requesting the same video and to serve clients in the same batch with one multicast video stream. This approach has the advantage that it can save server resources as well as server access and network bandwidth, thus allowing the server to handle a large number of customers without sacrificing access latency. VoD server replication is another approach that can allow a VoD service to handle a large number of clients, albeit at the additional cost of providing more servers. While replication is an effective way to increase the service capacity, it needs to be coupled with appropriate selection techniques in order to make efficient use of the increased capacity. In this paper, we investigate the design of server selection techniques for a system of replicated batching VoD servers. We design and evaluate a range of selection algorithms as they would be applied to three batching approaches: Batching with Persistent Channel Allocation, Patching, and Hierarchical Multicast Stream Merging (HMSM). We demonstrate that server replication combined with appropriate server selection scheme can indeed be used to increase the capacity of the service leading to improved performance.

What is an 'all-IP' network? What difference will IP networking make to 3G services? Third Generation (3G) mobile offers access to broadband multimedia services - and in the future most of these, even voice and video, will be IP-based.
