This paper presents the design and the implementation of the Virtual Video Gallery (VVG), an advanced distributed video on-demand system accessible through a dynamic virtual world, which mimes an art gallery where movie posters are exhibited The design phase is driven by object-oriented modeling techniques which depend on UML and its extensions purposely suited to model multimedia information systems. The implementation centers on an approach blending (i) Java, which provides powerful computing, multimedia and networking capabilities, (ii) VRML, which supports an easy construction of complex virtual worlds, and (iii) WWW facilities.

The rapid growth of wireless networks and services, integrated with the next-generation mobile communication systems, has led to the era of the pervasive computing. The popularity of the lightweight portable computers with the growing demands of transmitting real-time multimedia applications over the wireless Internet provides strong motivations to the service providers to support not only seamless user mobility, but also continuous and seamless service provisions to the customers. We propose a mobile differentiated services architecture for next generation wireless networks based on the hierarchical mobile MPLS (H-MPLS). We also propose an extension to the current H-MPLS protocol and make it applicable to our architecture. This mobile differentiated services mechanism is applied to satisfy the QoS requirements of mobile users who subscribe services in their home domain and move into some other foreign domains. Hence, the mobile users could enjoy the continuous services without worrying about where they are. A series of simulations, with multimedia applications like video and voice, were performed to evaluate the proposed system.

With the advent of wireless and mobile networks and the growing number of mobile users using the system, multimedia services are expected to dominate the design of the next generation of wireless systems. Our motivation in this paper is to develop a scheme that would support a large number of users as well as their demands, while eliminating to a large extent the side effects of the inherent protocols used in our scheme. We propose a novel hybrid medium access control (MAC) scheme, based on the theoretical 'near-perfect' CDMA using W-CDMA/SSFH/OFDM and an SDM component to support sector-based multimedia services. We also present a scheduling mechanism to support the hybrid algorithm. In order to increase the number of users that can be supported by the system and thereby reducing the call-blocking factor as much as possible, we have made use of the dynamic packet assignment algorithm. In this paper, we present our hybrid MAC protocol, its implementation and the simulation experiments we have carried out to evaluate its performance.

We have already proposed novel robust parameter estimation algorithms of a time-varying complex AR (TV-CAR) model for analytic speech signals, which are based on GLS (generalized least squares) and ELS (extended least squares) and have shown that the methods can achieve robust speech spectrum estimation against additive white Gaussian. In these methods, forward prediction error is only used to calculate the MSE criterion. This paper proposes the improved TV-CAR speech analysis methods based on forward and backward linear prediction in which backward prediction error is also adopted to calculate the MSE criterion, viz., the MMSE and GLS-based algorithms using the forward and backward prediction. The experiments with natural speech and natural speech corrupted by white Gaussian demonstrate that the improved methods can achieve more accurate and more stable spectral estimation.

multimedia LEO satellite networks will play an important role in providing truly global coverage required by mobile personal communication services. Due to the high mobility inherent to LEO systems, a number of challenging technical problems arise. The first contribution of this work is to propose a realistic mobility model, taking into account the rotation of the Earth, which was systematically ignored in the literature. Our second contribution is a novel resource reservation strategy, termed sequential probabilistic resource reservation (SPR), specifically designed to minimize connection interruption due to handoffs. Finally, we propose a novel connection admission control (CAC) algorithm, differentiating real-time and non-real-time services. Performance results obtained by simulation show that the novel mobility model is essential for a realistic network performance evaluation and that the novel SPR strategy offers low handoff blocking probability for both service classes and low new call blocking probability for non-real-time connections.

Interactive multimedia applications over multi-hop cell or packet-switched networks have strict bounds on delay, loss, and jitter. Much research has focused on how best to handle the networking issues related to supporting quality of service (QoS) contracts without compromising network efficiency, i.e. improving network utilisation, and reducing connection packet loss and late delivery. This paper describes our novel technique, network constrained smoothing, for smoothing video traffic into a server-side transmission schedule. Our approach combines QoS metrics about video connections together with network loading information in an algorithm that divides the schedule into equal-sized intervals of constant bit-rate. We evaluate performance by simulation and compare with an existing smoothing technique, optimal smoothing. We show the benefits of using network constrained smoothing to synchronise independent multimedia streams. The results show reductions in network loading at peak times and provide manageable information for routers about currently supported multimedia traffic.

multimedia systems can provide course content, active learning opportunities and instructional technology to facilitate education in the area of computer engineering to a broad range of students. This paper describes final results of a large NSF-funded project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Since the initial stages of this project, multimedia systems have become ubiquitous in our lives. During the lifetime of this project, we have explored rapidly evolving multimedia technologies and applications in a wide variety of scenarios: a novel multimedia courseware approach using a combination of CD/DVD and Web-based technology was designed and developed. Over 400 students have now taken courses using this media in a variety of formats; a new course in multimedia systems for nonmajors was developed and is being used as a core course for new programs in information technology across 29 community colleges, state colleges and universities across Massachusetts; and a set of modules on multimedia systems including video coding, computer graphics, multimedia networking, multimedia hardware, multimedia architectures and multimedia testing were developed. This paper describes the lessons learned in the overall project and draws conclusions about the impact of multimedia systems on computer engineering education as well as methods and future opportunities for similar curriculum innovation projects.

In this paper we present an algorithm for flow assignment in active nomadic computation. We present the algorithm with a novel active application - a cognizant video streaming mechanism which is capable of negotiating local network state based rate and let the video propagate over an extreme network with highly asymmetric link and node capacities. As a platform the stream uses the computing power of a quasi-active network. As a result the passing video stream appears as a self-organizing stream, which automatically senses the network asymmetry and adapts itself as the packets diffuse via the active subnet.

In this paper, we analyze the common packet channel (CPCH) mechanism for finite population, finite sojourn time and general packet length distribution. The obtained results demonstrate that for packet length distributions with the same mean but different tail properties the system behavior can change dramatically. In addition, we demonstrate that this study provides an analytical tool that can be used as the underlying framework for the support of a wide range of applications and management functions such as optimization of design parameters, integration of multimedia services and anomaly detection in CDMA wireless networks.
