This paper presents an overview of the aims and objectives of MPEG-4. This standard scheduled for November 1998 addresses content-based interactivity, universal access, robustness in error-prone environments, manipulation of objects, both synthetic and natural, etc., at various bit rates, quality levels and spatial/temporal resolutions. The standard is designed to accommodate different communication networks, processors and platforms through tools, algorithms and profiles.

The volume of multimedia data generated nowadays is exploding. To efficiently access and retrieve desired information, tools that enable automated analysis based on content are becoming indispensable. multimedia content is defined at both perceptual and conceptual levels. The former refers to the content characterized purely by intrinsic perception properties such as color, motion, or acoustic features. The latter refers to the content that is specified based on concepts or semantics such as sunset, anchors, or news headline stories. At both levels, the content is embedded in multiple forms that are usually complimentary to each other. The main objective of this thesis is to adaptively analyze the multimedia content by integrating cues from multiple modalities, including audio, video, and text, mainly in the scope of news broadcast. At the perceptual level, news broadcast data is segmented and classified into different video events such as news reporting and commercials. Audio and visual features are developed and integrated, aiming at discriminating different events effectively. Various classification mechanisms, including linear fuzzy threshold, maximum likelihood using Gaussian Mixture Model and Hidden Markov Model, Neural Network, as well as Support Vector Machine, are benchmarked. At the conceptual level, algorithms and demonstration systems for three applications are developed. In News Broadcast Browsing System, recovering and presentation of the embedded hierarchy structure of news broadcast are addressed. Important semantic objects such as hosting characters and headline news stories are adaptively extracted using the audio/visual models that are bootstrapped from on-line data. The problem of efficient search and retrieval of segmented multimedia objects based on audio is discussed in Query-by-example in Audio System. A Hybrid Approach to Recommending Universal Decimal Classification Codes for Cataloguing in Slovenian Digital Libraries

In this article we present a hybrid approach to recommending the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) codes for unclassified documents. By recommending UDC codes to librarians, we can provide the decision support as part of a semi-automatic cataloguing process. As current approaches to recommending UDC codes are scarce and limited to certain fields of expertise, our motivation was to create a hybrid approach which covers all fields of expertise within the UDC hierarchy. The cascade hybrid approach combines the BM25 ranking function with a multi-label classifier based on a BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) deep neural network architecture. Additionally, lists of the most commonly used UDC codes within a document's origin organization are used as a final content-based filtering method. The BM25 ranking function is used to create an initial list of recommendations. The first cascade step re-ranks the initial list of recommendations using the list of recommendations produced by the multi-label BERT-based classifier. The second cascade step re-ranks the resulting recommendation list from the first cascade step using a list of most commonly used UDC codes within the document's organization. Finally, post-processing steps are applied to obtain the final list of recommended UDC codes. We present in detail the UDC structure, the used text corpus of documents and the functioning of our hybrid recommendation approach. We perform the analysis of the generated recommendation lists for the corpus from the Slovenian Open-access Infrastructure using the metrics hit-ratio, normalized discounted cumulative gain, mean reciprocal rank and mean average precision. Our hybrid recommendation approach improves reference scores of individual methods for these metrics.

Automatic violent content web filtering approach based on the KDD process

Purpose - The growth of the web and the increasing number of documents electronically available has been paralleled by the emergence of harmful web pages content such as pornography, violence, racism, etc. This emergence involved the necessity of providing filtering systems designed to secure the internet access. Most of them process mainly the adult content and focus on blocking pornography, marginalizing violence. The purpose of this paper is to propose a violent web content detection and filtering system, which uses textual and structural content-based analysis. Design/methodology/approach - The violent web content detection and filtering system uses textual and structural content-based analysis based on a violent keyword dictionary. The paper focuses on the keyword dictionary preparation, and presents a comparative study of different data mining techniques to block violent content web pages. Findings - The solution presented in this paper showed its effectiveness by scoring a 89 per cent classification accuracy rate on its test data set. Research limitations/implications - Many future work directions can be considered. This paper analyzed only the web page, and an additional analysis of the visual content can be one of the directions of future work. Future research is underway to develop effective filtering tools for other types of harmful web pages, such as racist, etc. Originality/value - The paper's major contributions are first, the study and comparison of several decision tree building algorithms to build a violent web classifier based on a textual and structural content-based analysis for improving web filtering. Second, showing laborious dictionary building by finding automatically discriminative indicative keywords.

QoS-oriented content delivery is an important component in en-learning systems. In this paper we study the object placement problem in the parallel-access context for QoS-oriented content delivery. The problem is formulated in terms of bandwidth maximization and further proved to be equivalent to the Fault Tolerant Facility Location Problem (FTFL). In this problem the bandwidth that violates the triangle inequality is measured by a cost function which forms a metric when the shortest-path routing is deployed. Though there have been efficient UFL algorithms with good performance guarantees, the challenge of the FTFL Problem arises due to the conflict of its connectivity requirement (multiple distinct connections) and cost minimization (which leads to identical connections with the minimum cost). We investigate possible solutions for addressing this conflict after giving an overview of the existing techniques. Extension of the problem to the context of QoE-aware multimedia delivery which has important applications in e-learning systems is also discussed.

Mobile contact-less fingerprint scanners can be very important tools for the forensic investigation of crime scenes. To be admissible in court, data and the collection process must adhere to rules w.r.t. technology and procedures of acquisition, processing and the conclusions drawn from that evidence. Currently, no overall accepted benchmarking methodology is used to support some of the rules regarding the localisation, acquisition and pre-processing using contact-less fingerprint scanners. Benchmarking is seen essential to rate those devices according to their usefulness for investigating crime scenes. Our main contribution is a revised version of our extensible framework for methodological benchmarking of contact-less fingerprint scanners using a collection of extensible categories and items. The suggested main categories describing a contact-less fingerprint scanner are properties of forensic country-specific legal requirements, technical properties, application-related aspects, input sensory technology, pre-processing algorithm, tested object and materials. Using those it is possible to benchmark fingerprint scanners and describe the setup and the resulting data. Additionally, benchmarking profiles for different usage scenarios are defined. First results for all suggested benchmarking properties, which will be presented in detail in the final paper, were gained using an industrial device (FRT MicroProf200) and conducting 18 tests on 10 different materials.

The access of high bandwidth multimedia data is generally limited to the network due to the limited network resources, inefficient indexing mechanism and less of semantic interpretations. Currently, most content-based video content representation involves the segmentation and indexing of video based on scene change and camera/object motion, and such research generally performs off-line video processing. Little research has been done on on-line video processing, which is crucial in video communication applications such as video conferencing, video multicasting and on-line video browsing and retrieval. Our research investigates real-time content-based processing of multicast video over the Internet. New on-line video feature extraction schemes, such as scene change detection, on-line key frame classification, are considered to meet the requirement of real-time video multicasting filtering based on user's profile over the Internet. The annotation and features extracted from multicasted videoconference bitstream by the on-line video content analysis proxies, which are using the proposed video processing algorithms, are output to a separate metadata channel for the further assistance of semantic multicasting of video content. The performance of the proposed algorithms is also demonstrated in the paper.

The extensive amount of video data stored on available media (hard and optical disks) necessitates video content analysis, which is a cornerstone for different user-friendly applications, such as, smart video retrieval and intelligent video summarization. This paper aims at finding a unified and efficient framework for court-net sports video analysis. We concentrate on techniques that are generally applicable for more than one sports type to come to a unified approach. To this end, our framework employs the concept of multi-level analysis, where a novel 3-D camera modeling is utilized to bridge the gap between the object-level and the scene-level analysis. The new 3-D camera modeling is based on collecting features points from two planes, which are perpendicular to each other, so that a true 3-D reference is obtained. Another important contribution is a new tracking algorithm for the objects (i.e. players). The algorithm can track up to four players simultaneously. The complete system contributes to summarization by various forms of information, of which the most important are the moving trajectory and real-speed of each player, as well as 3-D height information of objects and the semantic event segments in a game. We illustrate the performance of the proposed system by evaluating it for a variety of court-net sports videos containing badminton, tennis and volleyball, and we show that the feature detection performance is above 92% and events detection about 90%.
