Social networked applications have been more and more popular, and have brought great challenges to the network engineering, particularly the huge demands of bandwidth and storage for social media. The recently emerged content clouds shed light on this dilemma. Towards the migration to clouds, partitioning the social contents has drawn significant interests from the literature. Yet the existing works focus on preserving the social relationship only, while an important factor, user access pattern, is largely overlooked. In this paper, by examining a large collection of YouTube video data, we first demonstrate that partitioning the network entirely based on social relationship would lead to unbalanced partitions in terms of access. We further analyze the role of social relationship in the social media applications, and conclude that user access pattern should be taken into account and social relationship should be dynamically preserved. We formulate the problem as a constrained k-medoids clustering problem, and propose a novel Weighted Partitioning Around Medoids (wPAM) solution. We present a dissimilarity/similarity metric to facilitate the preservation of the social relationship. We compare our solution with other state-of-the-art algorithms, and the preliminary results show that it significantly decreases the access deviation in each cloud server, and flexibly preserves the social relationship. © 2011 ACM.

Real-time content-based access to live video data requires content analysis applications that are able to process the video data at least as fast as the video data is made available to the application and with an acceptable error rate. Statements as this express quality of service (QoS) requirements to the application. In order to provide some level of control of the QoS provided, the video content analysis application must be scalable and resource aware so that requirements of timeliness and accuracy can be met by allocating additional processing resources. In this paper we present a general architecture of video content analysis applications including a model for specifying requirements of timeliness and accuracy. The salient features of the architecture include its combination of probabilistic knowledge-based media content analysis with QoS and distributed resource management to handle QoS requirements, and its independent scalability at multiple logical levels of distribution. We also present experimental results with an algorithm for QoS-aware selection of configurations of feature extractor and classification algorithms that can be used to balance requirements of timeliness and accuracy against available processing resources. Experiments with an implementation of a real-time motion vector based object-tracking application, demonstrate the scalability of the architecture.

This paper presents a fuzzy association rule-based intrusion detection and prevention (FAR IDP) system that is implemented within an e-commerce Web service-based application. This system compares the effectiveness and efficiency of using 20 fuzzy association rules compared to 366 fuzzy associative patterns (FAP) to determine whether to definitely grant access to normal transaction, probably deny access for suspicious transaction or certainly deny access to transactions which may contain malicious inputs or XML content. Experimental results from our FAR IDP system have demonstrated that both rules-based and pattern-based algorithms are able to detect, prevent and predict Web service attacks such as SQL injection, XML injection, DoS and SOAP oversized close to real-time, with detection accuracy of not lower than 99%. There is also a slight difference in terms of time;the transaction time for FAP is almost doubled that of FAR's in ms. Additionally, with a transaction time of less than 0.25ms and a detection accuracy of greater than 99%, our FAR IDP has outperformed many other fuzzy and Web service-based IDP systems.

Providing effective tools to navigate and access through long audio archives, or monitor and classify broadcast streams, proves to be an extremely challenging task. Main issues originate from the varied nature of patterns of interest in a composite audio environment, the massive size of such databases, and the capability of performing when prior knowledge on audio content is scarce or absent. This paper proposes a computational architecture aimed at discovering occurrences of repeating patterns in audio streams by means of unsupervised learning. The targeted repetitions (or motifs) are called signalling, by analogy with a biological nomenclature, as referring to a broad class of audio patterns (as jingles, songs, advertisements, etc...) frequently occurring in broadcast audio. We adapt a system originally developed for word discovery applications, and demonstrate its effectiveness in a song discovery scenario. The adaption consists in speeding up critical parts of the computations, mostly based on audio feature coarsening, to deal with the large occurrence period of repeating songs in radio streams. © 2011 IEEE.

Managing large scale broadband multimedia services on distributed media servers

This paper presents algorithms and principles for the management of large scale broadband multimedia services. For the implementation of these services we use a network of distributed media servers, storing broadband media information e.g. audio and video that are streamed from the server to the connected clients. The problem studied in this paper is the managing of media content on a server network. We present the 'Distributed Server Management System (DSMS)' that performs an efficient content and service management on the distributed servers. The DSMS allows to collect access patterns from the users of the multimedia services and uses this knowledge for the solution of some combinatorial optimization algorithms that have to be solved for an efficient assignment of media assets. We present these optimization algorithms and evaluate their performance using some benchmark instances.

Cloud-based video summarization is an increasingly popular technique for managing large video repositories more efficiently. In this research, we present a novel approach for cloud-based video summarization that focuses on reducing storage costs and improving accessibility by automatically extracting critical information from videos and generating brief summaries. Our approach leverages cloud computing technology and deep learning algorithms for video analysis and processing. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach using a realworld dataset of video files and demonstrate that it can generate high-quality video summaries while significantly reducing storage requirements. Our proposed approach has potential applications in areas such as security monitoring, video surveillance, and multimedia content management. This paper contributes to the existing literature by presenting a comprehensive study of cloud-based video summarization and proposing a novel solution that addresses the limitations of existing approaches, thereby improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of video management.

The enormous growth of digital music databases has led to a comparable growth in the need for methods that help users organize and access such information. One area in particular that has seen much recent research activity is the use of automated techniques to describe audio content and to allow its identification, browsing and retrieval. This paper presents algorithms for audio content analysis, description and identification that are developed and implemented in the context of the AXMEDIS project.

Recently, the rapid development of mobile multimedia intelligent voice systems has affected the rapid changes in user interaction. Meanwhile, the continuous optimization of recommended algorithms makes the change of interaction mode from the original user's active search to the machine actively recommending continuously. It is an inevitable trend that multimedia intelligent voice dialogue system brings more efficient content services to users through active recommendation. However, the existing multimedia intelligent voice dialogue systems are mainly based on the user's expression content to analyze the user's subject willingness and then provide the reply contents to user. This kind of interaction only drives the topic through the user, which will cause some problems like single chat topic and missing points of interest. In order to address these problems, this paper proposes an interactive topic guiding model. This model uses the surrounding similar users and user context information to guide users' topics, and taking into account the harmony of human-computer interaction, the game method is adopted to select the optimal content response strategy by considering the user's and robot's emotional friendliness and content friendliness. The experiments show that the model proposed in this paper can effectively guide topics. Moreover, it has significant improvement in content richness compared with other models in human-machine natural interaction, which can provide some research ideas for guiding the topic in the mobile multimedia intelligent voice system.
