Although many XML-based document formats are available for printing or publishing on the Internet, none of them is well designed to support both high quality printing and web publishing. To address this problem, we propose a novel XML-based document format for web publishing, called CEBX, in this paper. The proposed format is a fixed-layout document with printing quality, which has optimized document content organization, physical structure and protection scheme to support web publishing. There are four noteworthy features of CEBX documents: (1) CEBX provides original fixed layout by graphic units for high quality rendering. (2) The content in CEBX document can be reflowed to fit the display device basing on the content blocks and additional fluid information. (3) XML Document Archiving model (XDA), the packaging model used in CEBX, supports document linearization and incremental edit well. (4) By introducing a segment-based content protection scheme into CEBX, some part of a document can be previewed directly while the remaining part is protected effectively such that readers only need to purchase partial content of a book that they are interested in. This will be very helpful to document distribution and support flexible business models such as try-before-buy, on-demand reading, superdistribution, etc.

The article focuses on digital video analysis and recognition. Digital video media analysis and recognition (DVMAR) has become an active research topic in multimedia systems and computer vision areas. This is because progress of computer and communication technologies has created strong demand for many applications of digital video in a wide variety of areas, many of which require managing video in a database or information system environment; on the other hand, indexing and retrieval schemes for traditional databases and video manipulation tools in current television systems cannot manage video in an effective, interactive, and content-based manner. The goal of DVMAR is to develop algorithms, tools, and systems to extract and analyze basic elements, features and structures of video so as to make content-based access and transmission of video data feasible and more effective. In general, video media is considered to have the following basic structural elements: shots, scenes, sequences and segments.

content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been studied for nearly two decades since IBM's research on QBIC (Query by Image content) [1]. In the past decade, another related but different area, video fingerprinting, is attracting more and more attention. There are numerous papers published in both areas and researchers from the two areas are sporadically citing results from each other. However, as far as we know, there is no comprehensive comparison between those two areas. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by explicitly discussing the wide array of differences and connections between those two areas. We believe that such a comparative study can facilitate researchers migrating or crosspollinating between the two areas. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

During the European Cantata project (ITEA project, 2006-2009), a Multi-content Analysis framework for the classification of compound images in various categories (text, graphical user interface, medical images, other complex images) was developed within Barco. The framework consists of six parts: a dataset, a feature selection method, a machine learning based Multi-content Analysis (MCA) algorithm, a Ground Truth, an evaluation module based on metrics and a presentation module. This methodology was built on a cascade of decision tree-based classifiers combined and trained with the AdaBoost meta-algorithm. In order to be able to train these classifiers on large training datasets without excessively increasing the training time, various optimizations were implemented. These optimizations were performed at two levels: the methodology itself (feature selection / elimination, dataset pre-computation) and the decision-tree training algorithm (binary threshold search, dataset presorting and alternate splitting algorithm). These optimizations have little or no negative impact on the classification performance of the resulting classifiers. As a result, the training time of the classifiers was significantly reduced, mainly because the optimized decision-tree training algorithm has a lower algorithmic complexity. The time saved through this optimized methodology was used to compare the results of a greater number of different training parameters.

We present an unsupervised method to enrich textual applications with relevant images and colors. The images are collected by querying large image repositories and subsequently the colors are computed using image processing. A prototype system based on this method is presented where the method is applied to song lyrics. In combination with a lyrics synchronization algorithm the system produces a rich multimedia experience. In order to identify terms within the text that may be associated with images and colors, we select noun phrases using a part of speech tagger. Large image repositories are queried with these terms. Per term representative colors are extracted using the collected images. Hereto, we either use a histogram-based or a mean shift-based algorithm. The representative color extraction uses-the non-uniform distribution of the colors found in the large repositories. The images that are ranked best by the search engine are displayed on a screen, while the extracted representative colors are rendered on controllable lighting devices in the living room. We evaluate our method by comparing the computed colors to standard color representations of a set of English color terms. A second evaluation focuses on the distance in color between a queried term in English and its translation in a foreign language. Based on results from three sets of terms, a measure of suitability of a term for color extraction based on KL Divergence is proposed. Finally, we compare the performance of the algorithm using either the automatically indexed repository of Google Images and the manually annotated ***. Based on the results of these experiments, we conclude that using the presented method we can compute the relevant color for a term using a large image repository and image processing.

To crawl large amounts of weakly-tagged images for computer vision tasks such as object detection and scene recognition, it is very important to develop new techniques for tag cleansing and word sense disambiguation (i.e., removing irrelevant images from the crawled results). Based on this observation, a topic network is first generated to characterize both the semantic similarity contexts and the visual similarity contexts between the image topics more sufficiently. The topic network is used to represent the classes of objects and scenes of interest. Second, both the visual similarity contexts between the images and the semantic similarity contexts between their tags are integrated for tag cleansing and word sense disambiguation. By addressing the issues of polysemes and synonyms more effectively, our word sense disambiguation algorithm can determine the relevance between the images and the associated tags more precisely, and thus it can allow us to crawl large-scale weakly-tagged images for computer vision tasks.

In the current multimedia networked infrastructure, privacy breaches due to cyber-attacks result in huge economic losses. Despite these threats there is ever increasing demand to share data over various insecure networks for accomplishment of numerous tasks. In such a scenario there is a greater need to develop new algorithms for strengthening the existing cybersecurity frameworks, ensure security, privacy, copyright protection and authentication of data. In this paper a new technique for copyright protection, data security and content authentication of multimedia images is presented. The copyright protection of the media is taken care of by embedding a robust watermark using an efficient inter-block coefficient differencing algorithm and is proposed as Scheme I. Scheme II has been utilized to ensure both copyright protection, and content authentication. The authentication of the content has been ensured by embedding a fragile watermark in spatial domain while as copyright protection has been taken care of utilizing a robust watermark. In order to thwart an adversary and ensure that it has no access to actual embedded data, we make use of a novel encryption algorithm in conjunction with Arnold transform to encrypt data prior to its embedding. The experimental results reveal that the proposed framework offers high degree of robustness against single/dual/triple attacks;with Normalized Correlation (NCC), more than or equal to 0.95. Besides, the fragile watermark embedding makes the system capable of tamper detection and localization with average BER more than 45% for all signal processing/geometric attacks. The average PSNR achieved for both schemes is greater than 41 dB. A comparison of the proposed framework with various state-of-the-art techniques demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority. Effective and flexible solutions for enabling reduced resource consumption and handling content and associated processing (indexing algorithms) diversity (in terms of location, technical characteristics, execution constraints, requested features) are essential in multimedia management systems. In this paper we present a distributed multimedia retrieval system that enables efficient and effective content processing and access. Though the system’s architecture is a generic one, in order to explain system’s functionalities we will present an instance of the architecture for a video surveillance use case. The proposed system addresses all important topic research concerning this type of systems (architecture, indexing, query) and proposes a novel two steps indexing approach (at acquisition time: implicit indexing and at query time: explicit indexing). In this paper, we propose an effective framework for semantic analysis of human motion from a monocular video. As it is difficult to find a good motion description for humans, we focus on a reliable recognition of the motion type and estimate the body orientation involved in the video sequence. Our framework analyzes the body motion in three modules: a pre-processing module, matching module and semantic module. The proposed framework includes novel object-level processing algorithms, such as a local descriptor and a global descriptor to detect body parts and analyze the shape of the whole body as well. Both descriptors jointly contribute to the matching process by incorporating them into a new weighted linear combination for matching. We also introduce a simple cost function based on time-index differences to distinguish motion types and cycles in human motions. Our system can provide three different types of analysis results: (1) foreground person detection;(2) motion recognition in the sequence;(3) 3-D modeling of human motion based on generic human models. The proposed framework was evaluated and proved its effectiveness as it achieves the motion recognition and body-orientation classification at the accuracy of 95 % and 98 %, respectively.

Recent research results in the field of multimedia content Analysis (MCA) have been marked by an abundance of theoretical and algorithmic solutions covering narrow application domains only. In this paper we analyze this tendency and its origin in more detail and explain why, in our view, this should not be considered "the way to go" in providing easy access to content in multimedia systems and applications of the future. In particular, we concentrate on the case study of digital video, which we see as a straightforward example of multimedia. Through this case study we will discuss the needs and challenges of improving the generic potential of MCA algorithms.
