Fundamental tradeoffs in distributed algorithms for rate adaptive multimedia streams

Rate adaptive multimedia streams are streaming media connections where the encoding rate is adjusted dynamically (with corresponding changes in media content resolution) in response to changing levels of congestion along the connection. The field of optimization based congestion control has yielded sophisticated distributed algorithms for resource allocation among competing elastic streams. In this work we study the fundamental tradeoffs for a class of optimization based distributed algorithms for rate adaptive streams, building on our earlier work. We focus on three tradeoffs: i) the tradeoff between maximizing client average quality of service (QoS) and client fairness, ii) the tradeoff between granularity of control (both temporal and spatial) and QoS, and iii) the tradeoff between maximizing the received volume and minimizing the fluctuations in received rate. These tradeoffs are illustrated through extensive simulation results using ns-2.

In this paper, a new multimedia joint fingerprinting and encryption (JFE) scheme embedded into the advanced access content system (AACS) is proposed. Like other security-related systems, there exist some security threats to the proposed framework To cope with these difficulties, the contributions of this paper include: (i) we apply multimedia encryption at different points to resist some attacks points,and (ii) we propose rewritable fingerprint embedding (RFE) to deal with some multi-point collusion attacks. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the proposed AACS-compatible JFE method.

The development of appropriate tools and solutions to support effective access to video content is one of the main challenges for video digital libraries. Different techniques for manual and automatic annotation and retrieval have been proposed in recent years. It is a common practice to use linguistic ontologies for video annotation and retrieval: video elements are classified by establishing relationships between video contents and linguistic terms that identify domain concepts at different abstraction levels. However, although linguistic terms are appropriate to distinguish event and object categories, they are inadequate when they must describe specific or complex patterns of events or video entities. Instead, in these cases, pattern specifications can be better expressed using visual prototypes, either images or video clips, that capture the essence of the event or entity. High level concepts, expressed trough linguistic terms, and patterns specification, represented by visual prototypes, can be both organized into new extended ontologies where images or video clips are added to the ontologies as specification of linguistic terms. This paper presents algorithms and techniques that employ enriched ontologies for video annotation and retrieval, and discusses a solution for their implementation for the soccer video domain. An unsupervised clustering method is proposed in order to create multimedia enriched ontologies by defining visual prototypes that represent specific patterns of highlights and adding them as visual concepts to the ontology. An algorithm that uses multimedia enriched ontologies to perform automatic soccer video annotation is proposed and results for typical highlights are presented. Annotation is performed associating occurrences of events, or entities, to higher level concepts by checking their similarity to visual concepts that are hierarchically linked to higher level semantics, using a dynamic programming approach. Today's medical institutions produce enormous amounts of data on patients, including multimedia data, which is increasingly produced in digital form. These data in their clinical context contain much information and experience that is currently not being used up to its full potential. Through the digital form the data has become accessible for automatic analysis and treatment for a variety of applications. At the same time, the variety of images produced can be confusing even for trained specialists causing an information overload exists for many medical doctors. This suggests that content-based image retrieval can be a valuable tool for helping manage these data and access the right information at the right time. This article gives a short state of the art of content-based medical image retrieval followed by a description of the medGIFT project on image retrieval with its main components. Then, several challenges are used to illustrate areas where much more work is currently needed to advance biomedical image retrieval. This shows that we have now progresses beyond the phase, where medical doctors transfer a database to computer scientists to only evaluate their algorithms. We conclude that visual information retrieval can have a real impact in the medical field if the techniques can adapt to this rapidly changing field and get integrated into the workflow in radiology and other medical fields. ©2007 IEEE.

The large and growing amount of digital data, and the development of the Internet highlight the need to develop sophisticated access methods that provide more than just simple text-based queries. Many programs have been developed with complex mathematics algorithms to allow the transformation of image or audio data in a way that enchances searching accuracy. However it becomes difficult when dealing with large sets of multimedia data. This paper proposes and demonstrates a content Based multimedia Retrieval System (CBMRS). The proposed CBMRS includes both video and audio retrieval systems. The content Based Video Retrieval System (CBVRS) based on DCT and clustering algorithms. The audio retrieval system based on Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm and the Nearest Neighbor (NN) rule.

Walsh-like nonlinear phase orthogonal codes for direct sequence CDMA communications

Walsh codes are perfectly orthogonal binary (antipodal) block codes that found their use in many popular applications over several decades including synchronous multiuser communications. It is well known in the literature that they perform poorly for the case of asynchronous multiuser communications. Therefore, the near-orthogonal and nonlinear phase Gold codes with better performance are the preferred user codes in asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communications standards. In this paper, we relaxed linear phase requirements and new sets of Walsh-like nonlinear phase binary orthogonal user codes (transforms) are obtained for asynchronous and synchronous spread spectrum multiuser communications. It is shown that the proposed binary user code family outperforms the Walsh codes significantly and they match in performance with the popular, nearly orthogonal Gold codes closely for asynchronous multiuser communications in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. It is also shown that all. of the binary code families considered in this paper performed comparable for Rayleigh flat-fading channels. We present in this paper that there are a good number of such desirable code sets available in the binary sample space with different transform sizes. These new binary sets with good performance and flexible code lengths might help us to improve the spread spectrum multiplexing capabilities of future wireline and wireless CDMA communications systems.

Based on the social interactions of an email user, incoming email traffic can be divided into different categories such as, telemarketing, Opt-in family members and friends. Due to a lack of knowledge in the different categories, most of the existing spam filters are prone to high false positives and false negatives. Moreover, a majority of the spammers obfuscate their email content inorder to circumvent the content-based spam filters. However, they do not have access to all the fields in the email header. Our classification method is based on the path traversed by email (instead of content analysis) since we believe that spammers cannot forge all the fields in the email header. We based our classification on three kinds of analyses on the header: i) EndToEnd path analysis, which tries to establish the legitimacy of the path taken by an email and classifies them as either spam or non-spam; ii) Relay analysis, which verifies the trustworthiness of the relays participating in the relaying of emails; iii) Emails wantedness analysis, which measure the recipients wantedness of the senders emails. We use the IMAP message status flags such as, message has been read, deleted, answered, flagged, and draft as an implicit feed back from the user in Emails wantedness analysis. Finally we classify the incoming emails as i) socially close (such as, legitimate emails from family, and friends), ii) socially distinct emails from strangers, iii) spam emails (for example, emails from telemarketers, and spammers) and iv) opt-in emails. Based on the relation between spamminess of the path taken by spam emails and the unwantedness values of the spammers, we classify spammers as i) prospective spammers, ii) suspects, iii) recent spammers and iv) serial spammers. Overall, our method resulted in far less false positives compared to current filters like SpamAssassin. We achieved a precision of 98.65% which is better than the precisions achieved by SPF and DNSBL blacklists.
