The article describes the status of our ongoing R&D at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) towards the development of an advanced multimedia database biomedical information system that supports content-based image retrieval (CBIR). NLM maintains a collection of 17,000 digitized spinal X-rays along with text survey data from the Second National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES ii). These data serve as a rich data source for epidemiologists and researchers of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. It is currently possible to access these through text keyword queries using our Web-based Medical Information Retrieval System (WebMIRS). CBIR methods developed specifically for biomedical images could offer direct visual searching of these images by means of example image or user sketch. We are building a system which supports hybrid queries that have text and image-content components. R&D goals include developing algorithms for robust image segmentation for localizing and identifying relevant anatomy, labeling the segmented anatomy based on its pathology, developing suitable indexing and similarity matching methods for images and image features, and associating the survey text information for query and retrieval along with the image data. Some highlights of the system developed in MATLAB and Java are: use of a networked or local centralized database for text and image data;flexibility to incorporate new research work;provides a means to control access to system components under development;and use of XML for structured reporting. The article details the design, features, and algorithms in this third revision of this prototype system, CBIR3.

In this paper, the focus is on the management aspects for delivery of multimedia services to fast moving users (e.g., users in trains, cars or airplanes). The considered network architecture consists of two parts: an aggregation network part and an access network part. We designed a management system for the aggregation network. The main functionalities of this management system are: (i) pre-configuration of the QoS (Quality of Service) tunnels, based on the results of the network capacity planning process, (ii) activation of the QoS tunnels when required and (iii) tunnel reconfiguration when the activated tunnels are unsufficient to carry the instantaneous demand or in case of other failures. The main difference with existing management systems is that it is designed to deal with the rapidly moving nature of the traffic conditions and the generation of triggers for tunnel activations or reconfigurations. The management system focuses on multimedia service delivery to trains through high speed Ethernet aggregation networks. An extended GVRP (GARP (Generic Attribute Registration Protocol) VLAN Registration Protocol) and a new GARP protocol (G2RP) were designed and implemented as protocols for the automatic tunnel pre-configuration and activation, respectively. The management system makes use of optimization algorithms for network dimensioning and tunnel path determination. These algorithms will be described in detail and their evaluation results will be compared for a basic train scenario. Finally, measurement results on the performance of the designed protocols for tunnel pre-configuration and activation, are presented in detail.

In this paper, an approach for providing unified access to heterogeneous distributed cultural heritage collections is presented. The proposed approach is developed within the framework of the REACH Greek National Project with the overall aim to provide a Web portal enabling access to different databases of cultural content with emphasis on multimedia material. In order to achieve this, the project employs ontology-based representation of cultural content, multimedia content-based search algorithms, hybrid ontology and content-based access and user-friendly search interfaces. This fusion approach provides users with resources for building queries of multimedia repositories sequentially using multiple individual search tools, and performs higher quality searching. In the current stage of development, real content such as inscriptions and coins from the Greco-Roman time period, has successfully been incorporated in the system

Pervasive systems are created by introducing wireless communication into distributed multimedia systems. These systems facilitate mobile data access to applications such as health care, tourism and emergency. However new challenges have emerged that has not been adequately addressed in traditional distributed multimedia systems. In pervasive systems, data must be adapted to the user's preferences, device capabilities and network conditions. Several content adaptation techniques have been proposed to fit the data to the usage environment. In this paper we present a distributed content adaptation framework (DCAF) for distributed multimedia systems and its prototype implementation. The architecture takes into consideration client profile, network conditions, content profile (meta-data) and available adaptation services (third party software elements) to construct an optimal dynamic adaptation graph.

P2P networks have been proposed as a scalable, inexpensive solution to the problem of distributing multimedia content over the Internet. Since real P2P systems exhibit considerable heterogeneity in hardware, software and network connections, the design of P2P streaming networks must factor in this variation. There are two different sources of heterogeneity in P2P networks. Most existing work in the literature handle heterogeneity among receivers and requirements by the use of different multimedia encodings of the same content. In this paper we focus on the problems caused by heterogeneity in the network delays connecting receivers to the sender We assume that there is a single multicast tree and a single video stream. We propose new algorithms for building multicast trees for multimedia streaming in heterogeneous P2P networks. Our algorithms differ in the amount of communication and computational resources they require. We compare the performance (using simulations) of our algorithms with an existing Zigzag algorithm. Our results show that two of our algorithms ( FollowTree-Landmark-ii algorithm and FollowTree algorithm) significantly outperform Zigzag.

Many cross-layer design approaches for wireless multimedia transmission over various networks have been proposed. Truly cross-layer design solutions require joint optimization of multimedia coding, transport/network layer, medium access layer, and physical layer transmission strategies and protocols. The solution often becomes impractical because: (i) its computational complexity is high; and (ii) it needs to be recomputed as some inputs, such as the content characteristics or network conditions change. To this effect, we propose a novel framework for cross-layer design, which features: (i) the joint design strategy selection being adaptive not only to network conditions but also to multimedia content characteristics; (ii) the joint design strategy selection being based on off-line learning to address the computational complexity issue; and (iii) the off-line learning stage employing a new multiple objective optimization solution.

The digital-content market is urging better pricing and value-for-money for industry products and services. This is clearly evident in the recent price policies of majors. Production costs must be drastically reduced without affecting product quality. content providers, aggregators and distributors constantly need to adopt innovative means of increasing efficiency in order to reduce cost. Possible solutions to this challenge could be found by automating, accelerating and restructuring production processes. AXMEDIS architecture and tools aim at reaching those results by: (i) reducing costs for content production with artificial intelligence algorithms for content composition, formatting, protection and workflow management, (ii) reducing distribution and integration costs, increasing accessibility, with a P2P platform at B2B level integrating content management systems and workflows, (iii) providing algorithms and tools for innovative and flexible digital rights management, exploiting MPEG-21 and overcoming its limits, supporting several business and transactions models. AXMEDIS is a large IST FP6 Integrated Project on Research and Development.

Recent research results in the field of multimedia content Analysis (MCA) have been marked by an abundance of theoretical and algorithmic solutions covering narrow application domains only. In this paper we analyze this tendency and its origin in more detail and explain why, in our view, this should not be considered "the way to go" in providing easy access to content in multimedia systems and applications of the future. In particular, we concentrate on the case study of digital video, which we see as a straightforward example of multimedia. Through this case study we will discuss the needs and challenges of improving the generic potential of MCA algorithms.

This paper presents an adaptive filtering algorithm for the delivery of multimedia content with different quality of service (QoS) requirements in time-varying wideband code-division multiple access (W-CDMA) cellular networks. The algorithm objective is to guarantee levels of quality for two different user defined profiles (premium, or economy), while attempting to maximize the allocation of the radio channel bandwidth and maintaining the QoS requirements of downloaded traffic flows (audio, video, and data). Our proposed solution is based upon utilizing genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve a multi-objective function that selects, during a control period, the bit rates and formats for the media codecs of downloaded traffic flows and assigns the air interface channel rate and power to each user, subject to different constraints. To show the performance of the algorithm, W-CDMA systems with and without filtering capabilities are compared.

Currently, a lot of research has been devoted to (i) content distribution, (ii) traffic engineering, (iii) network monitoring and (iv) service enabling platforms. However, the integration of these four individual concepts in a single platform has not yet been studied in enough detail. In this paper we present an architecture for such a robust content delivery service. The combination of both distributed replication of videos and multi-source traffic engineering tackles specific problems such as congested network parts, overloaded servers and the occurrence of flash crowds. Contrary to most existing systems, the content placement and retrieval algorithms in the presented CDN obtain precise network state information from an integrated monitoring system, allowing even a higher efficiency. To validate the performance of the CDN, an exact placement ILP formulation and various RPA heuristics are implemented and simulated.
