In this paper, the focus is on the management aspects for delivery of multimedia services to fast moving users (e.g., users in trains, cars or airplanes). The considered network architecture consists of two parts: an aggregation network part and an access network part. We designed a management system for the aggregation network. The main functionalities of this management system are: (i) pre-configuration of the QoS (quality of service) tunnels, based on the results of the network capacity planning process, (ii) activation of the QoS tunnels when required and (iii) tunnel reconfiguration when the activated tunnels are insufficient to carry the instantaneous demand or in case of other failures. The main difference with existing management systems is that it is designed to deal with the rapidly moving nature of the traffic conditions and the generation of triggers for tunnel activations or reconfigurations. The management system focuses on multimedia service delivery to trains through high speed Ethernet aggregation networks. An extended GVRP (GARP (generic attribute registration protocol) VLAN registration protocol) and a new GARP protocol (G2RP) were designed and implemented as protocols for the automatic tunnel pre-configuration and activation, respectively. The management system makes use of optimization algorithms for network dimensioning and tunnel path determination. These algorithms are described in detail and their evaluation results are compared for a basic train scenario. Finally, measurement results on the performance of the designed protocols for tunnel pre-configuration and activation, are presented in detail.

Multimodal detection of highlights for multimedia content

We present a multimedia information analysis framework for content-based browsing of video. Specifically, we develop algorithms for the automated extraction of video highlights in sports video that are based on audio, text, and image features. The extracted annotations are used to build applications for selective browsing of sports videos. Such summarization techniques enable content-based indexing of multimedia documents for efficient storage and retrieval. In addition, in the context of the newly emerging standard MPEG-7, these methods will enable applications that use MPEG-7 descriptions. As this standard provides only the syntax for representing such descriptions and not specific algorithms for extracting them, these algorithms are of great value for establishing MPEG-7 as an accepted standard. We provide experimental results for the proposed algorithms on several hours of sports programs that prove the feasibility of efficient video access techniques in a multimedia environment.

The multimedia content delivery chain poses today many challenges. The increasing terminal diversity, network heterogeneity and the pressure to satisfy the user preferences are raising the need for content to be customized in order to provide the user the best possible experience. This paper addresses the problem of multimedia customization by (1) presenting the MPEG-7 multimedia content description standard and the MPEG-21 multimedia framework;(2) classifying multimedia customization processing algorithms;(3) discussing multimedia customization systems;and (4) presenting some customization experiments. Current multimedia databases contain a wealth of information in the form of audiovisual as well as text data. Even though efficient search algorithms have been developed for either media, there still exists the need for abstract presentation and summarization of the results of database users' queries. Moreover, multimedia retrieval systems should be capable of providing the user with additional information related to the specific subject of the query, as well as suggest other topics which could be identified to attract the interest of users with a similar profile. In this paper, we present solutions to these issues, giving as an example an integrated architecture we have developed, along with notions that support efficient and secure Internet access to audiovisual/video databases. Segmentation of each video in shots is followed by shot classification in a number of predetermined categories. Generation of users' profiles according to the categories, enhanced by relevance feedback, permits an efficient presentation of retrieved video shots or characteristic frames in terms of the user interest in them. Moreover, this clustering scheme assists the notion of 'lateral' links that enable the user to continue retrieval with data of similar nature or content to those already returned. Furthermore, user groups are formed and modeled by registering actual preferences and practices. This enables the system to 'predict' information that is possibly relevant to the user's interest and present it along with the returned results. The concepts utilized in this system can be smoothly integrated in MPEG-7 compatible multimedia database systems.

This paper introduces the principal approach and describes the basic architecture and current implementation of the knowledge-based multimedia adaptation framework we are currently developing. The framework can be used in Universal multimedia access scenarios, where multimedia content has to be adapted to specific usage environment parameters (network and client device capabilities, user preferences). Using knowledge-based techniques (state-space planning), the framework automatically computes an adaptation plan, i.e., a sequence of media conversion operations, to transform the multimedia resources to meet the client's requirements or constraints. The system takes as input standards-compliant descriptions of the content (using MPEG-7 metadata) and of the target usage environment (using MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation metadata) to derive start and goal states for the planning process, respectively. Furthermore, declarative descriptions of the conversion operations (such as available via software library functions) enable existing adaptation algorithms to be invoked without requiring programming effort. A running example in the paper illustrates the descriptors and techniques employed by the knowledge-based media adaptation system.

High-Speed Downlink Packet access (HSDPA) is the release 5 extension of WCDMA standard which provides high data rates (up to 10.8 Mbps) by using Adaptive Modulation/Coding (AMC) and fast packet scheduling. This paper presents a comparison of opportunistic scheduling algorithms for streaming media in HSDPA. We first present a discrete event model for HSDPA multimedia system and express stochastic QoS constraints that reflect the requirement for uninterrupted play-out. Next, we present a general structure of the opportunistic scheduling policies which exploit channel and/or buffer content variations for achieving the required QoS. By using computer simulations, we compare the performance of several special cases of the general policy in terms of the maximum number of the users that can be supported with the desired QoS constraint.

Depending on the specific information they are seeking, users desire flexible and intuitive methods to search and browse multimedia libraries. However, the cost of manually extracting the metadata to support such functionalities may be unrealistically high. Therefore, over the last decade there has been a great interest in designing and building systems that automatically analyze and index multimedia data, and retrieve its relevant parts. In this work we describe algorithms that facilitate browsing, searching, and summarization of video sequences. We propose shot transition detection algorithms for the detection of cut and dissolve types of shot transitions based on a binary tree regression classifiers framework. Our system is able to detect these transitions with high accuracy. We discuss stochastic models to model video program genres, such as news programs or sitcoms, and show how these can be applied to automatically detect the genre of a given program. We investigate the use of hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and stochastic context-free grammars (SCFGs) for modeling. Since the computational complexity of SCFG training is high, we develop a hybrid HMM-SCFG model that reduces the training time of the models considerably. Deriving compact representations of video sequences that are intuitive for users and let them easily and quickly browse large collections of video data is fast becoming one of the most important topics in content-based video processing. Such representations, which we will collectively refer to as video summaries, rapidly provide the user with information about the content of the particular sequence being examined, while preserving the essential message. We propose an automated method to generate video skims for information-rich video programs, such as documentaries, educational videos, and presentations, using statistical analysis based on speech transcripts that are obtained by automatic speech recognition (ASR) from the audio. In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable. © 2004 IEEE.

Recently surveillance and Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) applications are increasing as the cost of computing power needed to process the massive amount of information continues to fall. This computing power has been made possible partly by the latest advances in FPGAs and SOPCs. In particular, to design and implement state-of-the-Art electro-optical imaging systems to provide advanced surveillance capabilities, there is a need to integrate several technologies (e.g. telescope, precise optics, cameras, image/compute vision algorithms, which can be geographically distributed or sharing distributed resources) into a programmable system and DSP systems. Additionally, pattern recognition techniques and fast information retrieval, are often important components of intelligent systems. The aim of this work is using embedded FPGA as a fast, configurable and synthesizable search engine in fast image pattern recognition/retrieval in a distributed hardware/software co-design environment. In particular, we propose and show a low cost content Addressable Memory (CAM)-based distributed embedded FPGA hardware architecture solution with real time recognition capabilities and computing for pattern look-up, pattern recognition, and image retrieval. We show how the distributed CAM-based architecture offers a performance advantage of an order-of-magnitude over RAM-based architecture (Random access Memory) search for implementing high speed pattern recognition for image retrieval. The methods of designing implementing, and analyzing the proposed CAM based embedded architecture are described here. Other SOPC solutions/design issues are covered. Finally, experimental results, hardware verification, and performance evaluations using both the Xilinx Virtex-ii and the Altera Apex20k are provided to show the potential and power of the proposed method for low cost reconfigurable fast image pattern recognition/retrieval at the hardware/software co-design level.
