The shot based classification and retrieval is very important for video database organization and access. In this paper we present a new approach 'Nearest Feature Line - NFL' used in shot retrieval. We look key-frames in shot as feature points to represent the shot in feature space. Lines connecting the feature points are further used to approximate the variations in the whole shot. The similarity between the query image and the shots in video database are measured by calculating the distance between the query image and the feature lines in feature space. To make it more suitable to video data, we improved the original NFL method by adding constrains on the feature lines. Experimental results show that our improved NFL method is better than the traditional classification methods such as Nearest Neighbor (NN) and Nearest Center (NC).

CDMA systems in multipath fading channels need to estimate channel parameters for coherent detection of the transmitted signals. In this paper we present a simple but effective channel estimation algorithm that can be incorporated into most types of multiuser receivers to obtain good detection performance. This technique uses a set of correlation filters to independently estimate each of the channel parameters. One advantage our method has over subspace-based algorithms for channel estimation is that it can estimate the channel parameters without phase or amplitude ambiguity. Simulation results demonstrating that our channel estimator is capable of tracking reasonably fast fading channels are also presented in the paper.

The time split B-tree (TSBT) is modified for indexing a database of evolving binary images. This is accomplished by embedding ideas from linear region quadtrees that make the TSBT able to support spatio-temporal query processing. To improve query performance, additional pointers are added to the leaf-nodes of the TSBT. The resulting access method is called time split linear quadtree (TSLQ). algorithms for processing five spatio-temporal queries have been adapted to the new structure. Such queries appear in multimediasystems, or geographical information systems (GIS), when searched by content. The TSLQ was implemented and results of extensive experiments on query time performance are presented, indicating that the proposed algorithmic approaches outbalance respective straightforward algorithms. The region data sets used in the experiments were real images of meteorological satellite views and synthetic raster images.

There is an urgent need for effective content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems, and we believe the key to effective CBIR performance lies in the ability to access the image at the level of objects. Motivated by these considerations, we propose a region-based image retrieval system using max weighted bipartite matching, which can successfully solve the similarity measure of a multi-region image. The retrieval involves two stages: first, the images are segmented based on perceptual color homogeneity, for each color region, color, texture, scale, location and shape characteristics are used to represent the content of regions. Second, the max weighted bipartite matching scheme is used to measure the similarity between images. Experimental results show that a region-based approach can retrieve more relevant and more accurate images.

With the increasing popularity of the WWW, the main challenge in computer science has become content-based retrieval of multimedia objects. access to multimedia objects in databases has long been limited to the information provided in manually assigned keywords. Now, with the integration of feature-detection algorithms in database systems software, content-based retrieval can be fully integrated with query processing. We describe our experimentation platform under development, making database technology available to multimedia. Our approach is based on the new notion of feature databases. Its architecture fully integrates traditional query processing and content-based retrieval techniques.

A digital home network is a cluster of digital audio/visual (AN) devices including set-top boxes, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, and general-purpose computing devices such as personal computers. The network may receive copyrighted digital multimediacontent from a number of sources. This content may be broadcast via satellite or terrestrial systems, transmitted by cable operators, or made available as prepackaged media (e.g., a digital tape or a digital video disc). Before releasing their content for distribution, the content owners may require protection by specifying access conditions. Once the content is delivered to the consumer, it moves across home the network until it reaches its destination where it is stored or displayed. A copy protection system is needed to prevent unauthorized access to bit streams in transmission from one A/V device to another or while it is in storage on magnetic or optical media. Recently, two fundamental groups of technologies, encryption and watermarking, have been identified for protecting copyrighted digital multimediacontent. This paper is an overview of the work done for protecting content owners' investment in intellectual property.

Collaborative filtering is an important technology for creating user-adapting Web sites. In general the efforts of improving filtering algorithms and using the predictions for the presentation of filtered objects are decoupled. Therefore, common measures (or metrics) for evaluating collaborative filtering (recommender) systems focus mainly on the prediction algorithm. It is hard to relate the classic measurements to actual user satisfaction because of the way the user interacts with the recommendations, determined by their representation, influences the benefits for the user. We propose an abstract access paradigm, which can be applied to the design of filtering systems, and at the same time formalizes the access to filtering results via multi-corridors (based on content-based categories). This leads to new measures which better relate to the user satisfaction. We use these measures to evaluate the use of various kinds of multi-corridors for our prototype user-adapting Web site the: Active WebMuseum.

From the Publisher: Delivering MPEG-4 Based Audio-Visual Services investigates the different aspects of end-to-end multimedia services; content creation, server and service provider, network, and the end-user terminal. Part I provides a comprehensive introduction to digital video communications, MPEG standards, and technologies, and deals with system level issues including standardization and interoperability, user interaction, and the design of a distributed video server. Part ii investigates the systems in the context of object-based multimedia services and presents a design for an object-based audio-visual terminal, some of these features having been adopted by the MPEG-4 systems specification. The book goes on to study the requirements for a file format to represent object-based audio-visual content and the design of one such format. The design introduces new concepts such as direct streaming that are essential for scalable servers. The final part of the book examines the delivery of object-based multimedia presentations and gives optimal algorithms for multiplex-scheduling of object-based audio-visual presentations, showing that the audio-visual object scheduling problem is NP-complete in the strong sense. The problem of scheduling audio-visual objects is similar to the problem of sequencing jobs on a single machine. The book compares these problems and adapts job-sequencing results to audio-visual object scheduling, and provides optimal algorithms for scheduling presentations under resource constraints, such as bandwidth (network constraints) and buffer (terminal constraints). In addition, the book presents algorithms that minimize the resources required for scheduling presentations and the auxiliary capacity required to support interactivity in object-based audio-visual presentations. Delivering MPEG-4 Based Audio-Visual Services is essential reading for researchers and practitioners in the areas of multimediasystems engineering and multimedia computi
