Collaborative multimedia systems: Synthesis of media objects

When a group {I1,..., I-n} of individuals wishes to collaboratively construct a complex multimedia document, the first requirement is that they be able to manipulate media-objects created by one another. For instance, ii individual I-j wishes to access some media objects present at participant I-k'S site, he must be able to: 1) retrieve this object from across the network, 2) ensure that the object is in a form that is compatible with the viewing/editing resources he has available at his node, and 3) ensure that the object has the desired quality (such as image size and resolution). Furthermore, he must be able to achieve these goals at the lowest possible cost. In this paper, we develop a theory of media objects, and present optimal algorithms for collaborative object sharing/synthesis of the sort envisaged above. We then extend the algorithms to incorporate quality constraints (such as image size) as well as distribution across multiple nodes. The theoretical model is validated by an experimental implementation that supports the theoretical results.

In this work we present a system which visualizes the results obtained from image search engines in such a way that users can conveniently browse the retrieved images. The way in which search results are presented allows the user to grasp the composition of the set of images "at a glance". To do so, images are grouped and positioned according to their distribution in a prosemantic feature space which encodes information about their content at an abstraction level that can be placed between visual and semantic information. The compactness of the feature space allows a fast analysis of the image distribution so that all the computation can be performed in real time.

In this paper, we introduce new methods of performing selective encryption and spatial/frequency shuffling of compressed digital content that maintain syntax compliance after content has been secured. The tools described in this paper have been proposed to the MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) standardization group and have been adopted into the MPEG-4 IPMP Final Proposed Draft Amendment (FPDAM) [9]. We will describe the application of the new methods to the protection of MPEG-4 video content in the wireless environment, and illustrate how they are used to leverage established encryption algorithms for the protection of only the information fields in the bitstream that are critical to the reconstructed video quality, while maintaining compliance to the syntax of MPEG-4 video, and thereby reduces the amount of data to be encrypted and guarantees the inheritance of many of the nice properties of the unprotected bitstreams that have been carefully studied and built, such as error resiliency and network friendliness. The encrypted content bitstream works with many existing random access, network bandwidth adaptation, and error control techniques that have been developed for standard-compliant compressed video, thus making it especially suitable for wireless multimedia applications. Standard compliance also allows subsequent signal processing techniques to be applied to the encrypted bitstream.

Be there a traditional mobile user wanting to connect to a remote multimedia server. In order to allow them to enjoy the same user experience remotely (play, interact, edit, store and share capabilities) as in a traditional fixed LAN environment, several dead-locks are to be dealt with: (1) a heavy and heterogeneous content should be sent through a bandwidth constrained network;(2) the displayed content should be of good quality;(3) user interaction should be processed in real-time and (4) the complexity of the practical solution should not exceed the features of the mobile client in terms of CPU, memory and battery. The present paper takes this challenge and presents a fully operational MPEG-4 BiFS solution.

The management,of the vast amount of media assets captured at every day events such as meetings, birthday parties, vacation, and conferences has become an increasingly challenging problem. Today, most media management applications are media-centric. This means, they put the captured media assets into the center of the management. However, in recent years it has been proposed that events are a much better abstraction of human experience and thus provide a more appropriate means for managing media assets. Consequently, approaches that include events into their media management solution have been explored. However, they typically consider events only as some more metadata that can be extracted from the media assets. In addition, today's applications and approaches concentrate on particular problems such as event detection, tagging, sharing, classification, or clustering and are often focused on a single media type. In this paper, we argue for the benefits of an event-centric media management (EMMa) approach that-looks at the problem of media management holistically. Based on a generic event model, we specify a media event model for-the EMMa approach. The single -phases and processes of the EMMa approach are defined in a general process chain for-an event-centric media management, the EMMa cycle. This cycle follows the event concept throughout all phases and processes of the chain and-puts the concept of events in the center of the media management. Based on the media event model and EMMa cycle, we design a component-based architecture for the EMMa approach and conduct an implementation of the approach.

We perform comparative analysis of the visual quality of multiple 3D displays - seven portable ones, and a large 3D television set. We discuss two groups of parameters that influence the perceived quality of mobile 3D displays. The first group is related with the optical parameters of the displays, such as crosstalk or size of sweet spots. The second group includes content related parameters, such as objective and subjective comfort disparity range, suitable for a given display. We identify eight important parameters to be measured, and for each parameter we present the measurement methodology, and give comparative results for each display. Finally, we discuss the possibility of each display to visualize downscaled stereoscopic HD content with sufficient visual quality.

In the current multimedia networked infrastructure, privacy breaches due to cyber-attacks result in huge economic losses. Despite these threats there is ever increasing demand to share data over various insecure networks for accomplishment of numerous tasks. In such a scenario there is a greater need to develop new algorithms for strengthening the existing cybersecurity frameworks, ensure security, privacy, copyright protection and authentication of data. In this paper a new technique for copyright protection, data security and content authentication of multimedia images is presented. The copyright protection of the media is taken care of by embedding a robust watermark using an efficient inter-block coefficient differencing algorithm and is proposed as Scheme I. Scheme ii has been utilized to ensure both copyright protection, and content authentication. The authentication of the content has been ensured by embedding a fragile watermark in spatial domain while as copyright protection has been taken care of utilizing a robust watermark. In order to thwart an adversary and ensure that it has no access to actual embedded data, we make use of a novel encryption algorithm in conjunction with Arnold transform to encrypt data prior to its embedding. The experimental results reveal that the proposed framework offers high degree of robustness against single/dual/triple attacks;with Normalized Correlation (NCC), more than or equal to 0.95. Besides, the fragile watermark embedding makes the system capable of tamper detection and localization with average BER more than 45% for all signal processing/geometric attacks. The average PSNR achieved for both schemes is greater than 41 dB. A comparison of the proposed framework with various state-of-the-art techniques demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority. Digital multimedia content is delivered to homes via the Internet, satellite, terrestrial and cable networks. Scrambling is a common approach used by conditional access systems to prevent unauthorized access to audiovisual data. The descrambling keys are securely distributed to the receivers in the same transmission channel. Their protection is an important part of the key management problem. Although public-key cryptography provides a viable solution, alternative methods are sought for economy and efficiency. Message authentication is an important objective of information security in modern electronic distribution networks. This objective is met by providing the receiver of a message an assurance of the sender's identity. As physical protection such as sealed envelopes is not possible for messages expressed as binary sequences, digital tools have been developed using cryptography. A major limitation of all cryptographic methods for message authentication lies in their use of algorithms with fixed symmetric or public keys. This paper presents a key transport protocol based on secret sharing. Conditional access and message authentication are two important application areas for which the advantages of the proposed protocol are discussed. The protocol eliminates the need for a cipher, yet effectively combines the advantages of symmetric and public-key ciphers. It can be used to build a new key management scheme that allows the service providers to generate different keys for different sets of receivers, and to renew these keys in a convenient way.

In this work we propose a novel approach to automatically detect a swimmer and estimate his/her pose continuously in order to derive an estimate of his/her stroke rate given that we observe the swimmer from the side. We divide a swimming cycle of each stroke into several intervals. Each interval represents a pose of the stroke. We use specifically trained object detectors to detect each pose of a stroke within a video and count the number of occurrences per time unit of the most distinctive poses (so-called key poses) of a stroke to continuously infer the stroke rate. We extensively evaluate the overall performance and the influence of the selected poses for all swimming styles on a data set consisting of a variety of swimmers.

This paper presents tin adaptive filtering algorithm for the delivery of multimedia content with different qualify of service (QoS) requirements in time-varying wideband code-division multiple access (W-CDMA) cellular networks. The algorithm objective is to guarantee levels of quality for two different user defined profiles (Premium, or Economy), while attempting to maximize the allocation of the radio channel bandwidth and maintaining the QoS requirements of downloaded traffic flows (audio, video, and data). Our proposed solution is based upon utilizing Genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve a multi-objective function that selects, during a control period, the bit rates and formats for the media codecs of downloaded traffic flows and assigns the air interface channel rate and power to each user, subject to different constraints. To show the performance of the algorithm, W-CDMA systems with and without filtering capabilities are compared.
