In this paper, we propose a storage format which binds digital broadcasts with related data such as TV-Anytime metadata, additional multimedia resources, and personal viewing history. The goal of the proposed format is to make it possible to offer personalized content consumption after recording broadcasting contents to storage devices, e.g., HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc. TO achieve that, we adopt MPEG-4 file format as a container and apply a binary format for scenes (BIFS) for representing and rendering personal viewing history. In addition, TV-Anytime metadata is used to describe broadcasts and to refer to the additional multimedia resources, e.g, images, audio clips, and short video clips. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed format, we introduce an application scenario and test it on that scenario.

In the last years, information flood is becoming a common reality, and the general user, hit by thousands of possible interesting information, has great difficulties identifying the best ones, that can guide him in his/her daily choices, like concerts, restaurants, sport gatherings, or culture events. The current growth of mobile smartphones and tablets with embedded GPS receiver, Internet access, camera, and accelerometer offer new opportunities to mobile ubiquitous multimedia applications that helps gathering the best information out of an always growing list of possibly good ones. This paper presents a mobile recommendation system for events, based on few weighted context-awareness data-fusion algorithms to combine several multimedia sources. A demonstrative deployment were utilized relevance like location data, user habits and user sharing statistics, and data-fusion algorithms like the classical CombSUM and CombMNZ, simple, and weighted. Still, the developed methodology is generic, and can be extended to other relevance, both direct (background noise volume) and indirect (local temperature extrapolated by GPS coordinates in a Web service) and other data-fusion techniques. To experiment, demonstrate, and evaluate the performance of different algorithms, the proposed system was created and deployed into a working mobile application providing real time awareness-based information of local events and news.

In this paper, we propose an approach for automatically, recognizing persons in images based on their general outer appearance. Therefore we build a statistical model for each person. Large amounts of training data are collected and labeled automatically by using a visual sensor array capturing image sequences containing the person to be learnt. Foreground-background segementation is performed to seperate the person from background, thus enabeling to learn the persons appearance independent of the background. Color and gradient features are extracted representing the segmented person. Person recognition of incoming photos is carried out using (k)-Nearest Neighbor(s) classification and the normalized histogram intersection match value is used as distance measure. Reported experimental results show that the presented approach performs well.

video streaming services are the major sources of Internet traffic, and their usage is constantly growing. To cope with this increasing video traffic demand, 5G comes with a new Radio access Network (RAN), having increased network data rates, and the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) architecture, enabling the deployment of services closer to the end devices. 5G RAN and MEC open to new opportunities to enforce and boost the video content delivery, as the content can be cached locally at the MEC host and served with improved RAN connectivity. However, the presence of a cache located at MEC may affect player adaptation algorithm when employing Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) streaming technologies, such as Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH). The cache influences the network measurements performed by the DASH player, which are later used, among other factors, by its adaptation algorithm to select the video representation bitrate. This paper investigates the interactions between MEC cache and DASH adaptation algorithms in a real testbed, including 5G RAN and MEC platform. The effects on different adaptation algorithms are analyzed while caching the DASH video content at the MEC.

This paper addresses the problem of robust and automated synchronization of multiple audio and video signals. The input signals are from a set of independent multimedia recordings coming from several camcorders and microphones. While the camcorders are static, the microphones are mobile as they are attached to people. The motivation for synchronization of all signals is to support studies and understanding of human interaction in a decision support environment that have been limited so far due to the difficulties in automated processing of any observations during the decision making sessions. The application of our work is to environments supporting decisions. The data sets for this work have been acquired during training exercises of response teams, rescue workers, and fire fighters at multiple locations. The developed synchronization methodology for a set of independent multimedia recordings is based on introducing aural and visual landmarks with a bell and room light switches. Our approach to synchronization is based on detecting the landmarks in audio and video signals per camcorder and per microphone, and then fusing the results to increase robustness and accuracy of the synchronization. We report synchronization results that demonstrate accuracy of synchronization based on video and audio.

Context-aware recommendations offer the potential of exploiting social contents and utilize related tags and rating information to personalize the search for content considering a given context. Recommendation systems tackle the problem of trying to identify relevant resources from the vast number of choices available online. In this study, we propose a new recommendation model that personalizes recommendations and improves the user experience by analyzing the context when a user wishes to access multimedia content. We conducted empirical analysis on a dataset from last. fm to demonstrate the use of latent preferences for ranking items under a given context. Additionally, we use an optimization function to maximize the mean average precision measure of the resulted recommendation. Experimental results show a potential improvement to the quality of the recommendation in terms of accuracy when compared with state-of-the-art algorithms.

Increasing amounts of text, audio, and video content has fueled efforts to provide direct, content based access to these materials. Summaries are often necessary to enable timely relevancy assessments, information extraction, or information analysis from source material. Whereas text summarization research is receiving increasing attention, comparatively few investigators have examined video summarization. This paper reports on the extension of a broadcast news access system to provide multimedia summaries. We briefly overview our system for video analysis, focusing on our novel integration of image, speech and language processing techniques to support automated video summarization. We outline algorithms for proper name and keyphrase extraction, story segmentation, and key frame extraction which together underpin our current ability to automatically summarize video. We describe the systems ability to generate multimedia video summaries tailored to a user query. We discuss evaluation metrics for measuring the (quality) value of these summary artifacts.

With the emergence of new scalable coding standards, such as JPEG2000, multimedia is stored as scalable coded bit streams that may be adapted to cater network, device and usage preferences in multimedia usage chains providing universal multimedia access. These adaptations include quality, resolution, frame rate and region of interest scalability and achieved by discarding least significant parts of the bit stream according to the scalability criteria. Such content adaptations may also affect the content protection data, such as watermarks, hidden in the original content. Many wavelet-based robust watermarking techniques robust to such JPEG2000 compression attacks are proposed in the literature. In this paper, we have categorized and evaluated the robustness of such wavelet-based image watermarking techniques against JPEG2000 compression, in terms of algorithmic choices, wavelet kernel selection, subband selection, or watermark selection using a new modular framework. As most of the algorithms use a different set of parametric combination, this analysis is particularly useful to understand the effect of various parameters on the robustness under a common platform and helpful to design any such new algorithm. The analysis also considers the imperceptibility performance of the watermark embedding, as robustness and imperceptibility are two main watermarking properties, complementary to each other.

Recent years have seen increasing popularity of storing and managing personal multimedia data using online services. Preserving confidentiality of online personal data while offering efficient functionalities thus becomes an important and pressing research issue. In this paper, we study the problem of content-based search of image data archived online while preserving content confidentiality. The problem has different settings from those typically considered in the secure computation literature, as it deals with data in rank-ordered search, and has a different security-efficiency requirement. Secure computation techniques, such as homomorphic encryption, can potentially be used in this application, at a cost of high computational and communication complexity. Alternatively, efficient techniques based on randomizing visual feature and search indexes have been proposed recently to enable similarity comparison between encrypted images. This paper focuses on comparing these two major paradigms of techniques, namely, homomorphic encryption based techniques and feature/index randomization-based techniques, for confidentiality-preserving image search. We develop novel and systematic metrics to quantitatively evaluate security strength in this unique type of data and applications. We compare these two paradigms of techniques in terms of their search performance, security strength, and computational efficiency. The insights obtained through this paper and comparison will help design practical algorithms appropriate for privacy-aware cloud multimedia systems.

With exponential growth in social media sites and high penetration of Internet access and digital computing devices, there are humongous amounts of public data being generated on a day-to-day basis. Almost real-time information regarding the emerging trends can be gained through efficient techniques/algorithms to examine this enormous amount of data, which also gives hint about early warning if there is an imminent emergency case. Also, numerous helpful indicators regarding political and socioeconomic events can be seen through by carefully mining these data, which also aid in establishing efficient public policies. However, web services and data security—protection of systems and key data to avoid unauthorised tampering—is considered to be a non-trivial real-time issue. Moreover, security issue has always been a grave issue since there is frequent conflict of service availability with the security constraints should there be a change in the service media channels. The paper’s primary focus is on new mathematical models that help in simplifying and enhancing protection for multimedia big content against unauthorised tampering by examining elements of multimedia objects. Furthermore, a multimedia big data security framework is presented in this paper. This framework, built on the basis of the proposed models, will be employed to confirm the on-fly multimedia content for a requested service/page.
