Advances in digital storage and processing speed have made feasible the creation of large image databases with rapid access to individual items stored therein. The huge data sizes of images and the enormous number of images in a typical image database, coupled with inexact nature and subjective interpretations, have called for content-based retrieval systems. Fast and accurate retrievals are crucial for such systems to be used efficiently. This project provides an overview on the content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) techniques developed recently. Research directions and current available CBIR systems are presented. Important issues such as image segmentation algorithms, image logic structure and spatial relationships, spatial access methods and Query by Visual Example techniques (QVE) are discussed in detail. A prototype image retrieval system called IMAGESEEK is implemented using the JAVA programming language. The system enables the search of natural colour images and demonstrates the various ideas of Query by Visual Example techniques. A framework for CBIR systems is proposed. Experimental results of different QVE algorithms are discussed and compared with each other. The system has been successful in retrieving images from our sample data sets by their global and local colours. The user-friendly interface of IMAGESEEK allows the user to tailor and refine the query interactively by changing the retrieval algorithm, the threshold value, the weights, and the selected region of the query image. IMAGESEEK provides us a way to understand the key issues of CBIR techniques. It is a small but valuable component in the collection of multimedia retrieval systems.

The paper presents algorithms and principles for the management of large scale broadband multimedia services. For the implementation of these services, we use a network of distributed media servers, storing broadband media information e.g. audio and video that are streamed from the server to the connected clients. The problem studied in the paper is the managing of media content on a server network. We present the "Distributed Server Management System (DSMS)" that performs an efficient content and service management on the distributed servers. The DSMS allows one to collect access patterns from the users of the multimedia services and uses this knowledge for the solution of some combinatorial optimization algorithms that have to be solved for an efficient assignment of media assets. We present these optimization algorithms and evaluate their performance using some benchmark instances.

We present an adaptive wavelet view element framework for managing different types of multi-dimensional data in storage and retrieval applications. We consider the problems of multi-dimensional data compression, multi-resolution sub-region access, selective materialization, progressive retrieval and similarity searching. The framework uses wavelets to partition the multi-dimensional data into view elements that form the building blocks for synthesizing views of the data. The view elements are organized and managed using different view element graphs. The graphs are used to guide cost-based view element selection algorithms for optimizing compression, access, retrieval and search performance. We present the adoptive wavelet view element framework and describe its application in managing multi-dimensional data such as 1-D time series data, 2-D images, video sequences, and multi-dimensional data cubes. We present experimental results that demonstrate that the adaptive wavelet view element framework improves performance of compressing, accessing, and retrieving multi-dimensional data compared to non-adaptive methods.

This paper presents principles and algorithms for the management of a network of media servers. Such a server network allows the online delivery of broadband multimedia data, e.g. audio and video streams, to a large number of widely distributed clients. Thus, the implementation of large scale distributed broadband media information services is possible if such networks can be handled efficiently. In the paper two new combinatorial optimization problems are defined that have to be solved for an efficient management of the distributed media servers connected by a high-bandwidth communication network. The algorithms consider the case of a static mapping of media assets onto the server network as well as the dynamic migration of media assets on such a network. The first scenario is used in the case that all media assets are loaded for the first time onto the server network. The second scenario is applied dynamically during run-time of an information service taking the varying user access pattern and changing media content of the server network into account. In this paper the algorithms are presented and their efficiency is demonstrated using some benchmark instances. The algorithms are part of a larger distributed system that allows the management of a network of distributed media servers. The principles of this system are presented as well as some applications that have been developed and are supported by this distributed server management system (DSMS).

content delivery over the Internet, in order to allow universal access, needs to address both the multimedia nature of the content and the capabilities of the diverse client platforms the content is being delivered to. We present a system that tailors multimedia content to optimally match the capabilities of the client device requesting it. This system has three key components: (1) a representation scheme called the InfoPyramid (2) A set of transcoders for converting modality or resolution, and (3) a customizer that selects the best content representation to meet the client capabilities while delivering the most value. The InfoPyramid provides a multi-model, multi-resolution representation hierarchy for multimedia. The raw content components, such as text, audio, images, video, etc., are ingested by the system into InfoPyramids. Next, the transcoder populates the InfoPyramid structures with multi-resolution, multi-model versions of the content. The number of possible renditions of the multimedia content is potentially combinatorial in the number of content elements. The customization module uses the client device characteristics as constraints to pick the best content representation. content value is computed on the basis of publisher preference guidelines and the content transcoding. We illustrate with a system that deliver news stories customized to diverse clients such as workstations, PCs, PDAs, cellular phones, pagers, etc.

A multimedia object is represented by several kinds of feature vectors which are (semi)-automatically extracted. Therefore, a multimedia information system must employ multiple search and indexing mechanisms due to integration of multiple search modalities such as querying for search and for indexing, keywords and other content-based feature vectors extracted from multimedia objects such as color, texture, shape or sketch. However, today there is no indexing method for content based retrieval of such feature combinations and there is an increasing need for multiple-feature indexing in content based multimedia retrieval systems. In this paper, we introduce a new file structure called Spatial Grid File (SGF). This file structure enables to index multimedia objects by different and independent high-dimensional feature vectors. Moreover, with it, complex queries involving combined retrieval can be efficiently performed. It has unique feature in combining set of search modes each having different properties and similarity metrics. The detailed descriptions of SGF and a summary of the results obtained from the experiments are included.

In the convergence of information and entertainment there is a conflict between the consumers's expectation of fast access to high quality multimedia content through narrow bandwidth channels versus the size of this content. During the retrieval and information presentation of a multimedia application there are two problems that have to be solved: the limited bandwidth during transmission of the retrieved multimedia content and the limited memory for temporary caching. In this paper we propose an approach for latency optimization in information browsing applications. We propose a method for flattening hierarchically linked documents in a manner convenient for network transport over slow channels to minimize browsing latency. Flattening of the hierarchy involves linearization, compression and bundling of the document nodes. After the transfer, the compressed hierarchy is stored on a local device where it can be partly unbundled to fit the caching limits at the local site while giving the user availability to the content. This optimal bundling method will work for general Web browsing, wireless browsing as well as video library applications. In the paper we consider the video library browsing in more detail. The video is summarized in a Visual Table of content (VToC), which consists of sample multimedia content items such as video segments, images, audio, text and other derived information. The physical structure holding VToC is stored in a visual index and requires considerable storage size. During the storage process, the index must be flattened to a linear structure in order to be retrieved from a low bandwidth medium. We discuss the methods to optimize the retrieval latency. Specifically, we consider how to linearize the visual index structure in different segments with ordered download priorities while constraining the bandwidth and storage. The system could adjust the user's personal preferences by learning from consumer use patterns.

multimedia digital libraries require an open distributed architecture instead of a monolithic database system. In the Mirror project, we use the Monet extensible database kernel to manage different representations of multimedia objects. To maintain independence between content, meta-data, anti the creation of meta-data, we allow distribution of data and operations using CORBA. This open architecture introduces new problems for data access. From an end user's perspective, the problem is how to search the available representations to fulfill an actual information need;the conceptual gap between human perceptual processes and the meta-data is too large. From a system's perspective, several representations of the data may semantically overlap or be irrelevant. We address these problems with an iterative query process and active user participation through relevance feedback. A retrieval model based on inference networks assists the user with query formulation. The integration of this model into the database design has two advantages. First, the user can query both the logical and the content structure of multimedia objects. Second, the use of different data models in the logical and the physical database design provides data independence and allows algebraic query optimization. We illustrate query processing with a music retrieval application.

This paper investigates clustering techniques as a method of organizing image databases to support popular visual management functions such as searching, browsing and navigation. Different types of hierarchical agglomerative clustering techniques are studied as a method of organizing features spaces as well as summarizing image groups by the selection of a few appropriate representatives. Retrieval performance using both single and multiple level hierarchies are experimented with and the algorithms show an interesting relationship between the top k correct retrievals and the number of comparisons required. Some arguments are given to support the use of such cluster-based techniques for managing distributed image databases.

The access of high bandwidth multimedia data is generally limited to the network due to the limited network resources, inefficient indexing mechanism and less of semantic interpretations. Currently, most content-based video content representation involves the segmentation and indexing of video based on scene change and camera/object motion, and such research generally performs off-line video processing. Little research has been done on on-line video processing, which is crucial in video communication applications such as video conferencing, video multicasting and on-line video browsing and retrieval. Our research investigates real-time content-based processing of multicast video over the Internet. New on-line video feature extraction schemes, such as scene change detection, on-line key frame classification, are considered to meet the requirement of real-time video multicasting filtering based on user's profile over the Internet. The annotation and features extracted from multicasted videoconference bitstream by the on-line video content analysis proxies, which are using the proposed video processing algorithms, are output to a separate metadata channel for the further assistance of semantic multicasting of video content. The performance of the proposed algorithms is also demonstrated in the paper.
