The major drawback of interactive retrieval systems is the potential frustration of the user that is caused by an excessive labelling work. Active learning has proven to help solving this issue, by carefully selecting the examples to present to the user. In this context, the design of the user interface plays a critical role since it should invite the user to label the examples elected by the active learning. This paper presents the design and evaluation of an innovative user interface for image retrieval. It has been validate using real-life IEEE PETS video surveillance data. In particular, we investigated the most appropriate repartition of the display area between the retrieved video frames and the active learning examples, taking both objective and subjective user satisfaction parameters into account. The flexibility of the interface relies on a scalable representation of the video content such as Motion JPEG 2000 in our implementation. © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

In today's digital world, multimedia content is delivered to homes via the Internet, satellite, terrestrial and cable networks. Scrambling is a common approach used by conditional access systems to prevent unauthorized access to audio/visual data. The descrambling keys are securely distributed to the receivers in the same transmission channel. Their protection is an important part of the key management problem. Although public-key cryptography provides a viable solution, alternative methods are sought for economy and efficiency. This paper presents a key transport protocol based on secret sharing. It eliminates the need for a cipher, yet combines the advantages of symmetric and public-key ciphers.

Did the Super Bowl Kill the Internet?

Given the rapid increase in Internet streaming services to access multimedia content, to the detriment of traditional cable, satellite, and terrestrial, it is to be expected that this traffic will affect the performance of the Internet at several levels. One such level is the communication between autonomous systems that is primarily based on border gateway protocol (BGP). In order to understand this impact, a tool was developed to detect the problems that occur during a specific time period. This tool is able to identify and classify flapping events providing information about the networks potentially involved in the disruptions. The main focus of this paper is the analysis of the BGP updates registered during Super Bowl 2016 in order to understand how a large streaming event affects the Internet at the BGP level. Those results show that an increase in the number of updates happened during key times when a large number of concurrent viewers connected to the game. Many dampening and flapping events were observed accordingly. From those events, networks potentially affected were detected and categorized. The results of our study suggest that the Internet is not prepared to accommodate the potential streaming traffic generated during major events. This is of utmost importance for content providers and content delivery networks in designing their broadcast strategies which should take into consideration not only the scalability of their own servers but also the way in which data reaches the viewer.

The paper presents the Argos evaluation campaign of video content analysis tools supported by the French Techno-Vision program. This project aims at developing the resources of a benchmark of content analysis methods and algorithms. The paper describes the type of the evaluated tasks, the way the content set has been produced, metrics and tools developed for the evaluations and results obtained at the end of the first phase.

As the development of IT convergence technology reaches its zenith, data in almost all areas have been developed and operated as knowledge based system after digitalization [1]. Interactive multimedia computing services allow people to access rich multimedia content anytime and anywhere using any device and different access networks. It is anticipated that multimedia services will change the way we operate and interact with the world by developing numerous interesting multimedia applications. Interactive multimedia computing in ubiquitous environment poses many research challenges. One of the challenges is processing overhead in a service environment [2–7]. Therefore, novel techniques, architectures, algorithms, experiences regarding multimedia applications, and industry services should be considered, including the following fundamental issues.

content delivery over the Internet, in order to allow universal access, needs to address both the multimedia nature of the content and the capabilities of the diverse client platforms the content is being delivered to. We present a system that tailors multimedia content to optimally match the capabilities of the client device requesting it. This system has three key components: (1) a representation scheme called the InfoPyramid (2) A set of transcoders for converting modality or resolution, and (3) a customizer that selects the best content representation to meet the client capabilities while delivering the most value. The InfoPyramid provides a multi-model, multi-resolution representation hierarchy for multimedia. The raw content components, such as text, audio, images, video, etc., are ingested by the system into InfoPyramids. Next, the transcoder populates the InfoPyramid structures with multi-resolution, multi-model versions of the content. The number of possible renditions of the multimedia content is potentially combinatorial in the number of content elements. The customization module uses the client device characteristics as constraints to pick the best content representation. content value is computed on the basis of publisher preference guidelines and the content transcoding. We illustrate with a system that deliver news stories customized to diverse clients such as workstations, PCs, PDAs, cellular phones, pagers, etc.

This paper describes research activities at FX Palo Alto Laboratory (FXPAL) in the area of multimedia browsing, search, and retrieval. We first consider interfaces for organization and management of personal photo collections. We then survey our work on interactive video search and retrieval. Throughout we discuss the evolution of both the research challenges in these areas and our proposed solutions.

Current multimedia databases contain a wealth of information in the form of audiovisual as well as text data. Even though efficient search algorithms have been developed for either media, there still exists the need for abstract presentation and summarization of the results of database users' queries. Moreover, multimedia retrieval systems should be capable of providing the user with additional information related to the specific subject of the query, as well as suggest other topics which could be identified to attract the interest of users with a similar profile. In this paper, we present solutions to these issues, giving as an example an integrated architecture we have developed, along with notions that support efficient and secure Internet access to audiovisual/video databases. Segmentation of each video in shots is followed by shot classification in a number of predetermined categories. Generation of users' profiles according to the categories, enhanced by relevance feedback, permits an efficient presentation of retrieved video shots or characteristic frames in terms of the user interest in them. Moreover, this clustering scheme assists the notion of 'lateral' links that enable the user to continue retrieval with data of similar nature or content to those already returned. Furthermore, user groups are formed and modeled by registering actual preferences and practices. This enables the system to 'predict' information that is possibly relevant to the user's interest and present it along with the returned results. The concepts utilized in this system can be smoothly integrated in MPEG-7 compatible multimedia database systems.

MPEG-21 is an emerging standard from MPEG(1) that specifies a framework for transactions of multimedia content. MPEG-21 defines the fundamental concept known as a digital item, which is the unit of transaction in the multimedia framework. A digital item can be used to package content for such as a digital photograph, a video clip or movie, a musical recording with graphics and liner notes, a photo album, and so on. The packaging of the media resources, corresponding identifiers, and associated metadata is provided in the declaration of the digital item. The digital item declaration allows for more effective transaction, distribution, and management of multimedia content and corresponding metadata, rights expressions, variations of media resources. In this paper, we describe various challenges for multimedia content management in the MPEG-21 framework.

In this work we present a system which visualizes the results obtained from image search engines in such a way that users can conveniently browse the retrieved images. The way in which search results are presented allows the user to grasp the composition of the set of images "at a glance". To do so, images are grouped and positioned according to their distribution in a prosemantic feature space which encodes information about their content at an abstraction level that can be placed between visual and semantic information. The compactness of the feature space allows a fast analysis of the image distribution so that all the computation can be performed in real time.
