The experiments described in this paper indicate that under certain conditions content-based features are not required for efficient user-centred image retrieval in small media collections. The importance of feature selection drops dramatically if classification is used for retrieval (e.g. if Support Vector Machines are used) and only little user feedback is available. In this situation simple image, features and even random features perform equally well as sophisticated signal processing-based features (e.g. the content-based MPEG-7 image descriptors). Practically relevant applications for these findings are retrieval on mobile devices and in heterogeneous (e.g. ad hoc generated) media collections.

Be there a traditional mobile user wanting to connect to a remote multimedia server. In order to allow them to enjoy the same user experience remotely (play, interact, edit, store and share capabilities) as in a traditional fixed LAN environment, several dead-locks are to be dealt with: (1) a heavy and heterogeneous content should be sent through a bandwidth constrained network;(2) the displayed content should be of good quality;(3) user interaction should be processed in real-time and (4) the complexity of the practical solution should not exceed the features of the mobile client in terms of CPU, memory and battery. The present paper takes this challenge and presents a fully operational MPEG-4 BiFS solution.

We consider the problem of optimally configuring classifier chains for real-time multimedia stream mining systems. Jointly maximizing the performance over several classifiers under minimal end-to-end processing delay is a difficult task due to the distributed nature of analytics (e.g. utilized models or stored data sets), where changing the filtering process at a single classifier can have an unpredictable effect on both the feature values of data arriving at classifiers further downstream, as well as the end-to-end processing delay. While the utility function can not be accurately modeled, in this paper we propose a randomized distributed algorithm that guarantees almost, sure convergence to the optimal solution. We also provide results using speech data showing that the algorithm can perform Well under highly dynamic environments.

We perform comparative analysis of the visual quality of multiple 3D displays - seven portable ones, and a large 3D television set. We discuss two groups of parameters that influence the perceived quality of mobile 3D displays. The first group is related with the optical parameters of the displays, such as crosstalk or size of sweet spots. The second group includes content related parameters, such as objective and subjective comfort disparity range, suitable for a given display. We identify eight important parameters to be measured, and for each parameter we present the measurement methodology, and give comparative results for each display. Finally, we discuss the possibility of each display to visualize downscaled stereoscopic HD content with sufficient visual quality.

In this paper, we introduce new methods of performing selective encryption and spatial/frequency shuffling of compressed digital content that maintain syntax compliance after content has been secured. The tools described in this paper have been proposed to the MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) standardization group and have been adopted into the MPEG-4 IPMP Final Proposed Draft Amendment (FPDAM) [9]. We will describe the application of the new methods to the protection of MPEG-4 video content in the wireless environment, and illustrate how they are used to leverage established encryption algorithms for the protection of only the information fields in the bitstream that are critical to the reconstructed video quality, while maintaining compliance to the syntax of MPEG-4 video, and thereby reduces the amount of data to be encrypted and guarantees the inheritance of many of the nice properties of the unprotected bitstreams that have been carefully studied and built, such as error resiliency and network friendliness. The encrypted content bitstream works with many existing random access, network bandwidth adaptation, and error control techniques that have been developed for standard-compliant compressed video, thus making it especially suitable for wireless multimedia applications. Standard compliance also allows subsequent signal processing techniques to be applied to the encrypted bitstream.

A multimedia object is represented by several kinds of feature vectors which are (semi)-automatically extracted. Therefore, a multimedia information system must employ multiple search and indexing mechanisms due to integration of multiple search modalities such as querying for search and for indexing, keywords and other content-based feature vectors extracted from multimedia objects such as color, texture, shape or sketch. However, today there is no indexing method for content based retrieval of such feature combinations and there is an increasing need for multiple-feature indexing in content based multimedia retrieval systems. In this paper, we introduce a new file structure called Spatial Grid File (SGF). This file structure enables to index multimedia objects by different and independent high-dimensional feature vectors. Moreover, with it, complex queries involving combined retrieval can be efficiently performed. It has unique feature in combining set of search modes each having different properties and similarity metrics. The detailed descriptions of SGF and a summary of the results obtained from the experiments are included.

In this paper, we propose a storage format which binds digital broadcasts with related data such as TV-Anytime metadata, additional multimedia resources, and personal viewing history. The goal of the proposed format is to make it possible to offer personalized content consumption after recording broadcasting contents to storage devices, e.g., HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc. TO achieve that, we adopt MPEG-4 file format as a container and apply a binary format for scenes (BIFS) for representing and rendering personal viewing history. In addition, TV-Anytime metadata is used to describe broadcasts and to refer to the additional multimedia resources, e.g, images, audio clips, and short video clips. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed format, we introduce an application scenario and test it on that scenario.

Collaborative filtering is an important technology for creating user-adapting Web sites. In general the efforts of improving filtering algorithms and using the predictions for the presentation of filtered objects are decoupled. Therefore, common measures (or metrics) for evaluating collaborative filtering (recommender) systems focus mainly on the prediction algorithm. It is hard to relate the classic measurements to actual user satisfaction because of the way the user interacts with the recommendations, determined by their representation, influences the benefits for the user. We propose an abstract access paradigm, which can be applied to the design of filtering systems, and at the same time formalizes the access to filtering results via multi-corridors (based on content-based categories). This leads to new measures which better relate to the user satisfaction. We use these measures to evaluate the use of various kinds of multi-corridors for our prototype user-adapting Web site the: Active WebMuseum.

A comprehensive approach to the access of archival collections necessitates the interplay of various types of metadata standards. Each of these standards fulfills its own part within the context of a 'metadata infrastructure'. Besides this, it should be noted that present-day digital libraries are often limited to the management of mainly textual and image-based material. Archival Information systems dealing with various media types are still very rare. There is a need for a methodology to deal with time-dependant media within an archival context. The aim of our research is to investigate and implement a number of tools supporting the content management multimedia data within digital collections. A flexible and extendible framework is proposed, based on the emerging Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS). Firstly, we will focus on the description of archival collections according to the archival mandates of provenance for the benefit of an art-historical research in an archive-theoretic ally correct manner. Secondly, we will examine the description tools that represent the semantics and structure of multimedia data. In this respect, an extension of the present archival metadata framework has been proposed to time-based media content delivered via standards such as the MPEG-7 multimedia content description standard.

Exploring Latent Preferences for Context-Aware Personalized Recommendation systems

Context-aware recommendations offer the potential of exploiting social contents and utilize related tags and rating information to personalize the search for content considering a given context. Recommendation systems tackle the problem of trying to identify relevant resources from the vast number of choices available online. In this study, we propose a new recommendation model that personalizes recommendations and improves the user experience by analyzing the context when a user wishes to access multimedia content. We conducted empirical analysis on a dataset from last. fm to demonstrate the use of latent preferences for ranking items under a given context. Additionally, we use an optimization function to maximize the mean average precision measure of the resulted recommendation. Experimental results show a potential improvement to the quality of the recommendation in terms of accuracy when compared with state-of-the-art algorithms.
