content-aware association control in wireless networks

With the rapid development of wireless technology, it is of increasing interest to support various services in wireless LANs. access control and load balancing are employed to meet the different QoS requirements of different services. Although a number of AP access control schemes and load balancing techniques have been proposed for wireless LANs, few of them have considered the diversity of QoS requirements of different services, which can be used to improve QoS while balancing the traffic load. In this paper, we propose a new association control scheme, which considers the difference among user services' requirements and balances their load among APs. The defined problem CAL (content-aware Association control and Load balancing) is mathematically described as a min-max programming. Since the CAL problem is NP-hard, we propose an α-approximation (α≥2) centralized algorithm CCAL to resolve it. CCAL employs a novel method to simplify the original problem to the Minimum cost Maximum flow problem, which is solved in polynomial time. Extensive evaluations show that the proposed algorithms outperform the conventional schemes in terms of the bandwidth and traffic load. © 2014 Binary Information Press.

Transparent Network-Assisted Flow Mobility for multimedia Applications in IMS Environments

Cellular network operators are striving to solve the problem caused by the increasing volume of traffic over their networks. Given the proliferation of multi-interface devices, offloading part of the traffic to available access networks (e. g., WiFi or 3G access networks, even from other operators) seems to be a promising alternative. Here, we propose an IMS-compatible solution for flow mobility between access networks that exhibits two key features: flow mobility is transparent to both local applications at mobile nodes and their communication peers (e. g., multimedia content servers), and mobility operations are assisted by the network, so the home network supports the terminal in the process of access network discovery, and provides the terminal with policies that meet visited and home operators' roaming agreements while optimizing the use of their networks. The proposed solution has been validated using a real IMS testbed with Ethernet and WiFi access networks, where the mobility of UDP and TCP flows has been tested.

Our society is creating, storing and using an ever increasing volumes of digital multimedia content. We have access to hundreds of billions of images and videos on the Internet, in the archives of professional content creators and owners, and in the personal libraries of home users. In this context, content-based identification of images' and videos and visual search capabilities are essential enablers for a range of applications that require fast, robust and efficient algorithms. The interoperability of the technologies and systems is also an important consideration. During the lecture Miroslaw Bober will review the latest advances in content fingerprinting and visual search and how they impact related standardisation efforts within the MPEG group. In particular will present the MPEG Visual Signatures, which include the Image Signature and Video Signature content description tools. The Visual Signatures are designed specifically to enable fast and robust identification of near duplicate or derived (modified) visual content in large-scale databases. We will also look at the latest addition to the MPEG family of standards: Compact Descriptors for Visual Search (CDVS). Achieving a state-of-the-art identification and recognition performance, the applications are numerous and include rights management and monetization, distribution management, usage monitoring, and professional or personal database management.

Future Internet is foreseen to fully handle a wide range of multimedia services allowing their access trough diverse computing devices such as laptops, TVs, PDAs and 3G mobile phones interconnected via different wire-line and wireless networking technologies. Such a diversification in the computational context reinforces the need of personalized and adaptive media services towards better end-user experience. However, building context-aware media systems raises a number of challenges related to (i) context representation, management and provisioning (ii) binding context situations to services and (iii) performing context-driven service and content adaptation; and this in a dynamic, scalable and interoperable way. In this paper, we present a future Internet architecture1 that enables automated situation-driven media services' discovery, composition and delivery. The proposed solution relies on a new Home-Box layer among which the context-awareness and adaptation features are distributed.

A weight-aware recommendation algorithm for mobile multimedia systems

In the last years, information flood is becoming a common reality, and the general user, hit by thousands of possible interesting information, has great difficulties identifying the best ones, that can guide him in his/her daily choices, like concerts, restaurants, sport gatherings, or culture events. The current growth of mobile smartphones and tablets with embedded GPS receiver, Internet access, camera, and accelerometer offer new opportunities to mobile ubiquitous multimedia applications that helps gathering the best information out of an always growing list of possibly good ones. This paper presents a mobile recommendation system for events, based on few weighted context-awareness data-fusion algorithms to combine several multimedia sources. A demonstrative deployment were utilized relevance like location data, user habits and user sharing statistics, and data-fusion algorithms like the classical CombSUM and CombMNZ, simple, and weighted. Still, the developed methodology is generic, and can be extended to other relevance, both direct (background noise volume) and indirect (local temperature extrapolated by GPS coordinates in a Web service) and other data-fusion techniques. To experiment, demonstrate, and evaluate the performance of different algorithms, the proposed system was created and deployed into a working mobile application providing real time awareness-based information of local events and news.

The growing popularity of the high-end mobile computing devices-smartphones, tablets, notebooks and more equipped with high-speed network access, enables the mobile user to watch multimedia content from any source on any screen, at any time, while on the move or stationary. In this context, the network operators must ensure smooth video streaming with the lowest service delay, jitter, and packet loss. This paper proposes a resource efficient Device-Oriented Adaptive multimedia Scheme (DOAS) built on top of the downlink scheduler in LTE-Advanced systems. DOAS bases its adaptation decision on the end-user device display resolution information and Quality of Service (QoS). DOAS is implemented on top of the Proportional Fair (PF) and the well-known Modified Largest Weighted Delay First (M-LWDF) scheduling algorithms within the 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced system. The performance of the proposed adaptive multimedia scheme was analyzed and compared against a non-adaptive solution in terms of throughput, packet loss and PSNR.

Designing user interfaces to enhance human interpretation of medical content-based image retrieval: application to PET-CT images

Purpose content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in medicine has been demonstrated to improve evidence-based diagnosis, education, and teaching. However, the low clinical adoption of CBIR is partially because the focus of most studies has been the development of feature extraction and similarity measurement algorithms with limited work on facilitating better understanding of the similarity between complex volumetric and multi-modality medical images. In this paper, we present a method for defining user interfaces (UIs) that enable effective human user interpretation of retrieved images. Methods We derived a set of visualisation and interaction requirements based on the characteristics of modern volumetric medical images. We implemented a UI that visualised multiple views of a single image, displayed abstractions of image data, and provided access to supplementary non-image data. We also defined interactions for refining the search and visually indicating the similarities between images. We applied the UI for the retrieval of multi-modality positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET-CT) images. We conducted a user survey to evaluate the capabilities of our UI. Results Our proposed method obtained a high rating (4 out of 5) in the majority of survey questions. In particular, the survey responses indicated the UI presented all the information necessary to understand the retrieved images, and did so in an intuitive manner. Conclusion Our proposed UI design improved the ability of users to interpret and understand the similarity between retrieved PET-CT images. The implementation of CBIR UIs designed to assist human interpretation could facilitate wider adoption of medical CBIR systems.

Successful music recommendation systems need to incorporate information on at least three levels: the music content, the music context, and the user context. The former refers to features derived from the audio signal;the second refers to aspects of the music or artist not encoded in the audio, nevertheless important to human music perception;the third refers to contextual aspects of the user which change dynamically. In this paper, we briefly review the well-researched categories of music content and music context features, before focusing on user-centric models, which have been neglected for a long time in music retrieval and recommendation approaches. In particular, we address the following tasks: (i) geospatial music recommendation from microblog data, (ii) user-aware music playlist generation on smart phones, and (iii) matching places of interest and music. The approaches presented for task (i) rely on large-scale data inferred from microblogs, motivated by the fact that social media represent an unprecedented source of information about every topic of our daily lives. Information about music items and artists is thus found in abundance in user-generated data. The questions of how to infer information relevant to music recommendation from microblogs and what to learn from them are discussed. So are different ways of incorporating this kind of information into state-of-the-art music recommendation algorithms. The presented approaches targeted at tasks (ii) and (iii) model the user in a more comprehensive way than just using information about her location and music listening habits. We report results of a user study aiming at investigating the relationship between music listening activity and a large set of contextual user features. Based on these, an intelligent mobile music player that automatically adapts the current playlist to the user context is presented. Are accessible distance learning systems useful for all students? Our experience with IMES, an accessible web-based learning system

Nowadays the use of distance learning systems is widely extended in engineering education. Moreover, most of them use multimedia resources that sometimes are the only educational material available to provide certain educational knowledge to the students. Unfortunately, most of the current educational systems and their educational content present accessibility barriers so some students cannot access to these educational resources. This paper introduces IMES, an inclusive system designed to ensure that students of all abilities can access the educational content of the system. But, are all the students (not only students with disabilities) satisfied with this kind of inclusive applications? Are they useful for all the students? One hundred and eight students participated in the evaluation of the system during an academic course at Universidad Carlos iii of Madrid. The evaluation shows that the system presents educational benefits to all the students in terms of usefulness and user's satisfaction. Copyright © 2013, IGI Global.
