We design, implement, and evaluate a middleware system, HybCAST, that leverages a hybrid cellular and ad hoc network to disseminate rich contents from a source to all mobile devices in a predetermined region. HybCAST targets information dissemination over a range of scenarios (e. g., military operations, crisis alerting, and popular sporting events) in which high reliability and low latency are critical and existing fixed infrastructures such as wired networks, 802.11 access points are heavily loaded or partially destroyed. HybCAST implements a suite of protocols that: (i) structures the hybrid network into a hierarchy of two-level ad hoc clusters for better scalability, (ii) employ both data push and pull mechanisms for high reliability and low latency dissemination of rich content, and (iii) implement a near-optimal gateway selection algorithm to minimize the transmission redundancy. To demonstrate its practicality and efficiency, we have implemented and deployed the HybCAST middleware on several Android smartphones and an in-network Linux machine that acts as a dissemination server. The system is evaluated via real experiments using a UMTS network and extensive packet-level simulations. Our experimental results from a live network show that HybCAST achieves 100% reliability with shorter latencies and lower overall energy consumption. Simulation results confirm that HybCAST outperforms other state-of-the-art systems in the literature. For example, HybCAST exhibits a 5 times reduction in the dissemination latencies as compared to other hybrid dissemination protocols, while its energy consumption is a third of a cellular-only dissemination system. Furthermore, the simulation results demonstrate that HybCAST scales well and maintains good performance under varying numbers of mobile devices, diverse content sizes, and device mobility.

The web has become the largest repository of multimedia information and its convergence with telecommunications is now bringing the benefits of web technology and hybrid artificial intelligence systems to hand-held devices. However, maximizing accessibility is not always the main objective in the design of web applications, specially if it is concerned with facilitating access for disabled people. This way, natural spoken conversation and multimodal conversational agents have been proposed as a solution to facilitate a more natural interaction with these kind of devices. In this paper, we describe a proposal to provide spoken access to Internet information that is valid not only to generate basic applications (e.g., web search engines), but also to develop dialog-based speech interfaces that facilitate a user-adapted access that enhances web services. We describe our proposal and detail several applications developed to provide evidences about the benefits of introducing speech to make the enormous web content accessible to all mobile phone users. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This position paper deals with queries beyond text, mixing several multimedia contents: audio, video, image and text. Search approaches combining some of these formats have been studied, including query by example techniques in situations where only one format is considered. It is worth mentioning that most of these research works do not deal with text content. A new approach to allow users introducing multimodal queries and exploring multimedia repositories is proposed. For this purpose, different ranked result lists must be combined to produce the final results shown for a given query. The main goal of this proposal is to reduce the semantic gap between low level features and high level concepts in multimedia contents. The use of qualitative data giving more relevance to text content along with machine learning methods to combine results of monomodal retrieval systems is proposed. Although it is too soon to show experimentation results, a prototype implementing the approach is under development and evaluation. © 2012 ICST Institute for Computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

随着宽频网路的快速发展与高度普及，网路多媒体服务（例如网路电话和线上游戏）已经成为许多使用者在日程生活的一部分。另外，科技的进步使得各式运算装置的效能大幅提升，越来越多的使用者透过平板电脑和智慧型手机连结网际网路，已经不只局限于桌上型电脑或笔记型电脑。由于运算装置效能和网路环境的异质性，让使用者在任何运算装置和网路环境上都能获得良好的服务品质，成为网路多媒体服务提供者的重要目标。然而，服务提供者必须先了解如何的服务品质才能够满足使用者的需求。我们在这篇论文探讨如何量测网路多媒体服务带给使用者的经验品质，以及探讨系统层面的效能因素如何影响网路多媒体服务的品质。首先我们提出基于群众外包概念的实验架构，能够有效且可靠地评估使用者对于多媒体服务品质的经验品质与满意程度。接着我们尝试了解网路电话系统如何透过调整收话端的拨放延迟机制，提供使用者良好的经验品质。另外，由于现今的网际网路无法保证资料传输品质，我们提出一个能够侦测点对点档案分享流量的机制，可用在网路管理上以提升网路服务效能。我们的主要贡献可分为三点：（一）运用我们提出的群众外包式多媒体服务的经验品质量测架构，可以有效率和经济地从广大受试者群体收集实验资料，并且能够保证实验结果的可靠度。（二）我们探讨三个热门的网路电话系统的拨放延迟机制，并指出这些系统可借由改善它们的机制而提供使用者更好的服务品质。（三）我们提出的点对点档案分享流量侦测机制能够达到很高的侦测率，能够对于网路服务品质提供带来很大的助益。

In Wireless multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), data fusion and collaborative in-network processing operations often require effective multimedia synchronization control. Extensive researches have been done in the traditional networks. Most of these works assume that there exists a powerful synchronization controller in the network. However, for WMSNs, the in-network processing of the multimedia content is usually performed based on the resource-constrained sensors. Traditional synchronization control algorithms fail to run on the low-end hardware platform. In this paper, we propose an adaptive synchronization control scheme with multi-level buffer to address this problem. Main contributions of this paper are as follows. (i) To overcome the resource constraint of WMSNs, we perform the synchronization control in a distributed way by combining the sensors in the stream transmission path. (ii) By evaluating the current network state, we adjust the level number of the buffer adaptively to balance the delay and delay jitter. (iii) Through analyzing the buffer state of each level, we propose an efficient packet scheduling scheme to reduce the delay jitter actively. (iv) We implement the proposed scheme and verify its effectiveness in our practical WMSNs platform. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme can maintain the streams synchronization effectively with the low-end sensors.

In this work we present a system which visualizes the results obtained from image search engines in such a way that users can conveniently browse the retrieved images. The way in which search results are presented allows the user to grasp the composition of the set of images "at a glance". To do so, images are grouped and positioned according to their distribution in a prosemantic feature space which encodes information about their content at an abstraction level that can be placed between visual and semantic information. The compactness of the feature space allows a fast analysis of the image distribution so that all the computation can be performed in real time.

Be there a traditional mobile user wanting to connect to a remote multimedia server. In order to allow them to enjoy the same user experience remotely (play, interact, edit, store and share capabilities) as in a traditional fixed LAN environment, several dead-locks are to be dealt with: (1) a heavy and heterogeneous content should be sent through a bandwidth constrained network;(2) the displayed content should be of good quality;(3) user interaction should be processed in real-time and (4) the complexity of the practical solution should not exceed the features of the mobile client in terms of CPU, memory and battery. The present paper takes this challenge and presents a fully operational MPEG-4 BiFS solution.

We perform comparative analysis of the visual quality of multiple 3D displays - seven portable ones, and a large 3D television set. We discuss two groups of parameters that influence the perceived quality of mobile 3D displays. The first group is related with the optical parameters of the displays, such as crosstalk or size of sweet spots. The second group includes content related parameters, such as objective and subjective comfort disparity range, suitable for a given display. We identify eight important parameters to be measured, and for each parameter we present the measurement methodology, and give comparative results for each display. Finally, we discuss the possibility of each display to visualize downscaled stereoscopic HD content with sufficient visual quality.
