Usage of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) is confined to financial transactions in the present world scenario. multimedia usage for finance is inhibited by several factors including security and lack of flexible user interface models to proliferate the public environment usage criterion. Financial services become more attractive when the user obtains a plurality of services over existing access methodology using personalized web pages, animated and other customized mobile agents to mimic the usage patterns. We present an intelligent and novel approach to facilitate and propel financial and non-financial services for public environments that seamlessly integrate wireless multimedia applications and digital content over the financial services network. Our design is based on the Embedded ATM access Point that uses secure software architecture with v2olP stack to facilitate the usage and creation of a multitude of new services. Dynamic and Adaptive Context-Sensitive GUI with animated icons form the trend for the next generation of compact ubiquitous devices that proliferate the home network and public environment.

Raptor codes have been proven very suitable for mobile multimedia content delivery. A systematic Raptor code is employed for the application layer Forward Error Correction (FEC), schemes of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) and standard and the IP Datacast over Digital video Broadcasting (DvB) services. Those services run on mobile devices powered by embedded systems. This paper analyzes the performance, energy profile and resource implication of Raptor decoder on a system on a chip (SoC) platform with a soft-core embedded processor. At the heart of the Raptor decoder for binary erasure channel (BEC) is the decoding of the pre-code. The following three methods are used for that task: Belief Propagation (BP), Gaussian Elimination (GE) and the 3GPP inactivation decoding Gaussian elimination (IDGE). The paper analyzes the error correction capability and the complexity of each algorithm on embedded system. Additionally, the paper investigates how the cache size, matrix memory type and organization affect the algorithms under consideration. Finally, a power and energy dissipation analysis for the operation of the three algorithms under consideration is presented. © 2012 Elsevier B.v. All rights reserved.

mobile devices have made the world a small place. They are also being used widely, to access the Web. However, because most available web pages are designed for desktop PC in mind, it is inconvenient to browse these large web pages on a mobile device with a small screen. With the enormous increase in mobile users since last decade, to such an extent that it even exceeds the number of desktop users in many developing countries, it becomes crucial to design systems for Web Manipulation, there by providing easier and greater accessibility and device independence. In this paper, we propose a new browsing technique to facilitate efficient web access and provide a better user experience on a device with rather small screen as compared to the usual desktop. It also proposes a novel technique to handle multimedia content, especially the images and video on a web page. In order to solve the problem of incomplete tags in HTML, an equivalent XML is generated for the desired webpage. For efficient browsing, the web page is represented as a multi level hierarchy, with the index of major sections on the first level and the sections indexed again in to sub-sections on the second level and so on, until we reach sub-sections that can be represented as sub-pages that fit in the small screen. We also propose an efficient algorithm for navigating through the sub-pages, thereby providing better user experience. The proposed technique provides better and efficient web browsing on mobile small displays up to user satisfaction. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper presents the design of the Functional Geospatial Information System (FunGIS), which is aimed at providing a comprehensive GIS service to disabled people. FunGIS provides features for fast, easy access to information and aids users find what they want and information querying. FunGIS enhances the information content for disabled people and the performance of the system in a comprehensive manner so that a) the possibility of integrating the system with live, working information sources and b) reduced information maintenance can be achieved. The technology and implementation considerations for FunGIS, performance evaluation and the lessons learnt have also been provided in this paper. Such systems are extremely useful in the African context for managing disabled people in that locations of important entities such as toilets, restaurants, fuel stations can be easily identified and become easily navigatable. The linguistics aids in FunGIS would provide further assistance in an Africa, where disparate people live in diverse areas.

There is lot of personal multimedia content (audio, image, video) being generated due to the ease of generating such content with the everyday devices, such as, mobile phones and also due to the plummeting cost of media-generating devices, such as, digital cameras which have made them ubiquitously available. Almost everyone wants to share his/her personal content with family and friends. In addition to this sharing, there needs to be proper mechanism of accessing this content by technically non-savvy people. This is more so a requirement for the masses in an emerging economy like India where broadband access is almost non-existent, and for the elderly people everywhere, who use Tv as their main device for accessing media. We present a system, which sits in the Internet cloud, simplifies content upload and organization, and allows seamless sharing and access of the multimedia content across networks and devices. Most importantly, the content can be accessed from any one of the 3 types of screens: web/PC, mobile, Tv. The system hides all the complexity of the storage, formatting, and organization of the media content from the users. Performance evaluation of the system shows that it is robust against variations of bandwidth, delay and jitter in a mobile wireless network and is reasonably scalable with the increase in the number of users.

Performance evaluation of H.264/SvC video streaming over mobile WiMAX

mobile broadband wireless networks, such as mobile WiMAX, have been designed to support several features like, e.g., Quality of Service (QoS) or enhanced data protection mechanisms, in order to provide true access to real-time multimedia applications like voice over IP or video on Demand. On the other hand, recently defined video coding schemes, like H.264 scalable video coding (H.264/SvC), are evolving in order to better adapt to such mobile environments with heterogeneous clients and time-varying available capacity. in this work we assess the performance of H.264/SvC video streaming over mobile WiMAX under realistic network conditions. To this aim, we make use of specific metrics, like PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) or MOS (Mean Opinion Score), which are related to the quality of experience as perceived by the end user. Simulation results show that the performance is sensitive to the different available H.264/SvC encoding options, which respond differently to the loss of data in the network. On the other hand, if aggressive error recovery based on WiMAX data protection mechanisms is used, this might lead to unacceptable latencies in the video play out, especially for those mobiles with poor wireless channel characteristics. The growing popularity of the high-end mobile computing devices - smartphones, tablets, notebooks and more-equipped with high-speed network access, enables the mobile user to watch multimedia content from any source on any screen, at any time, while on the move or stationary. In this context, the network operators must ensure smooth video streaming with the lowest service delay, jitter, and packet loss. This paper proposes a resource efficient Device-Oriented Adaptive multimedia Scheme (DOAS) built on top of the downlink scheduler in LTE-Advanced systems. DOAS bases its adaptation decision on the end-user device display resolution information and Quality of Service (QoS). DOAS is implemented on top of the Proportional Fair (PF) and the well-known Modified Largest Weighted Delay First (M-LWDF) scheduling algorithms within the 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced system. The performance of the proposed adaptive multimedia scheme was analyzed and compared against a non-adaptive solution in terms of throughput, packet loss and PSNR.

With the explosive growth of mobile multimedia traffic, content caching is seen as an effective solution to alleviate the heavy traffic burden on back-haul and front-haul and to improve the quality of real-time data services. The concept of 'Cache as a Service (CaaS)' is a framework for caching virtualization for mobile cloud-based networks. Consequently, contents can be distributed and stored based on their popularity, traffic diversity, and diverse user demands. In this paper, we mainly consider the problem of allocating computing resources for very low latency services, as well as high data rate services that require sufficient spectral resources. We plan to exploit all the benefits of a completely virtualized environment, where mobile virtual network operators (MvNOs) and virtual service providers (vSPs) are connected in the Cloud through network as a service (NaaS) using distributed infrastructure as a service (IaaS). vSPs provide service to (Internet of things) IoT devices including software as a service (SaaS). The IoT devices, as a service requester will take advantage of emerging caching techniques (CaaS) to accomplish the on-demand low-latency services that require a large amount of computing resources and a high bandwidth. In order to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) requirements, the radio access network RAN as a Service (RANaaS) is the pivot of this environment that will allocate dynamically networking, computing and storage resources according to the required services in terms of latency and throughput. Thus we propose a many-to-many matching game between the sets of IoT devices and the set of virtual service providers (vSPs). To solve this game, we exploit the deferred acceptance algorithm that enables the players to self-organize into a stable matching and a reasonable number of algorithm iterations. Present day mobile phones have evolved as multimedia devices, where users can capture and store photos, videos on their mobile phones. As the amount of digital multimedia content expands, it becomes increasingly difficult to find specific images in the device, giving rise to problems of organization, storing and retrieval of images. To improve human access to a large unstructured data in their personal collections on mobile phones, there is a need for effective and precise retrieval algorithms for the user to search browse and interact with these collections in real time. Retrieval algorithms are highly complex and this characteristic becomes more intense on mobile platform due to restrictions in architecture and computing power. In this paper we propose a speech based image retrieval algorithm for personal collections optimized for porting on to a mobile phones. We have treated the speech spectrogram as an image and applied trace transformation to obtain an unique and robust identifier string that acts as a fingerprint for image retrieval systems. Trace transform is popular in image processing algorithms because it is robust to affine transforms for feature extraction. The proposed algorithm exhibits optimization in memory and retrieval time costs.
