In recent years, the mobile device demand has largely increased because of the accessibility, ubiquity and portability of such devices, which are being used not only for personal purposes but also in several applications like education, science, entertainment, commerce and industry, among others. visualization and interaction with high definition multimedia content, like large images and videos, using mobile devices, represents a challenge because of their very limited machine resources and bandwidth. For such application, this content requires special treatment so that users can properly access and interact. In this article, it is proposed an architectural model for efficient streaming and visualization of very large images on mobile devices using the JPEG2000 standard and an adapted image transfer protocol. Results show that the introduced architecture is effective for visualizing regions of large images and presents good performance, both for transmission and decoding processes, allowing a simple and dynamic interaction between user and images.

Most of the modern DTV sets and set top boxes are embedded Linux devices. Apart from playing broadcast transport streams, some of these devices offer network connectivity and various applications. The development of software for these devices is not unified, so there is no compatibility between applications developed by different vendors. On the other hand, there are embedded systems developed on top of the embedded Linux kernel which offer network connectivity and a large number of applications that are available for download. Most of the applications developed for these platforms are developed in the Java programming language. However, those platforms do not support DTV services. This paper presents a proposal for the integration of DTV services into embedded systems which support the Java programming language. The proposed solution offers complete DTV functionality, along with the operation of regular applications. The proposal includes two API specifications: the Java API that is used to access DTV content from Java applications, and the DTV Middleware API that is used to connect the native code to the Java API(1).

The field of wireless and mobile communication has a remarkable history that spans over a century of technology innovations from Marconi's first transatlantic transmission in 1899 to the worldwide adoption of cellular mobile services by over four billion people today. Wireless has become one of the most pervasive core technology enablers for a diverse variety of computing and communications applications ranging from third-generation/fourth-generation (3G/4G) cellular devices, broadband access, indoor WiFi networks, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) systems to embedded sensor and radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications. This has led to an accelerating pace of research and development in the wireless area with the promise of significant new breakthroughs over the next decade and beyond. This paper provides a perspective of some of the research frontiers of wireless and mobile communications, identifying early stage key technologies of strategic importance and the new applications that they will enable. Specific new radio technologies discussed include dynamic spectrum access (DSA), white space, cognitive software-defined radio (SDR), antenna beam steering and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO), 60-GHz transmission, and cooperative communications. Taken together, these approaches have the potential for dramatically increasing radio link speeds from current megabit per second rates to gigabit per second, while also improving radio system capacity and spectrum efficiency significantly. The paper also introduces a number of emerging wireless/mobile networking concepts including multihoming, ad hoc and multihop mesh, delay-tolerant routing, and mobile content caching, providing a discussion of the protocol capabilities needed to support each of these usage scenarios. Human Computation Games (HCGs) are applications that harness human intelligence to generate content using the element of fun. Originating in the Web environment, HCGs have now appeared on mobile devices with the advent of global positioning systems, wireless Internet access and multimedia capabilities. In this research, we study usability and playability factors that influence a mobile HCG, known as Glob, by comparing it with the non-game based mobile content sharing application known as Geo Topic. The applications were evaluated based on satisfaction, ease of use and usefulness aspects of usability, as well as the leisure, social interaction and challenge aspects of playability. Results suggested that Glob scored significantly better in terms of playability for leisure and social interaction. Further, Geo Topic scored significantly better in terms of the ease of use aspect of usability. © 2012 IEEE.

We design, implement, and evaluate a middleware system, HybCAST, that leverages a hybrid cellular and ad hoc network to disseminate rich contents from a source to all mobile devices in a predetermined region. HybCAST targets information dissemination over a range of scenarios (e. g., military operations, crisis alerting, and popular sporting events) in which high reliability and low latency are critical and existing fixed infrastructures such as wired networks, 802.11 access points are heavily loaded or partially destroyed. HybCAST implements a suite of protocols that: (i) structures the hybrid network into a hierarchy of two-level ad hoc clusters for better scalability, (ii) employ both data push and pull mechanisms for high reliability and low latency dissemination of rich content, and (iii) implement a near-optimal gateway selection algorithm to minimize the transmission redundancy. To demonstrate its practicality and efficiency, we have implemented and deployed the HybCAST middleware on several Android smartphones and an in-network Linux machine that acts as a dissemination server. The system is evaluated via real experiments using a UMTS network and extensive packet-level simulations. Our experimental results from a live network show that HybCAST achieves 100% reliability with shorter latencies and lower overall energy consumption. Simulation results confirm that HybCAST outperforms other state-of-the-art systems in the literature. For example, HybCAST exhibits a 5 times reduction in the dissemination latencies as compared to other hybrid dissemination protocols, while its energy consumption is a third of a cellular-only dissemination system. Furthermore, the simulation results demonstrate that HybCAST scales well and maintains good performance under varying numbers of mobile devices, diverse content sizes, and device mobility.

Three recent developments - increasing adoption of smart phones and tablets as desired platforms for infotainment, increased access to mobile broadband networks globally, and availability of public Clouds - are aligning to possibly enable a new generation of truly ubiquitous multimedia services on mobile devices: Cloud mobile Media (CMM) services. Such services will be able to avail of the elasticity of cloud computing and ubiquity of cloud storage, and thereby not constrained either by mobile device capabilities, or availability of content. In this paper, we look at early trends in CMM services, and opportunities and benefits for new CMM services in the near future. We analyze the possible impact of such services, and issues that need to be addressed to make CMM services viable, including response time, user experience, energy, privacy, cost and scalability. We provide several directions for possible solutions, which include developing response time management techniques, scalable cloud media application, and cloud user experience measurement techniques. We also propose extending the Cloud beyond the traditional Internet to the edge of the wireless networks. © 2012 IEEE.

Social technology intersection indicates how a mobile device could facilitate communication and collaboration with many individuals and systems - the options available for social interaction using the technical capabilities of the mobile device to send SMS, call a friend, access the internet, etc. mobile device is the beginning of something new in blended learning. Technology progress in the field of learning has evolved especially with the use of e-learning and now with the emergence of a new concept called m-learning due to mobile technologies, which are probably the most influential technology for teaching and learning in the next decade. Internet access remains inaccessible to most of our students. But almost all students have access to mobile technology. Nevertheless, the m-learning has some constraints in the use of mobile technologies such as the size of the screen which is too small for reading, battery life that is in constant progress but still low for e-learning applications, user interfaces that are not user-friendly on most mobile phones and diversity of mobile devices and the rapidly changing trends suggest producing 'LMS mobiles' adaptable to a wide range of mobiles. To avoid redundancy in the reproduction of content that exists in the e-learning environment, we combined in this approach the use of mobile device in the blended learning to offer to our students the opportunity to be mobile and use the mobile as the medium of information. In this paper the benefits of mobile-learning and its use in the INTTIC's Moodle platform are presented. A new way to send information to different learners is developed, relying on the multimedia podcasting technology. This latter is still relatively new and not widely known. © 2012 IEEE.

The articles in this special section focus on fifth generation (5G) mobile communication for ultra-reliable low-latency communications. With the expected superior performance to the current generation of mobile networks, 5G systems are poised to support new and diverse usage scenarios and applications, thus enriching the lives of citizens and the productivity of industry and public sectors. The widely accepted scenarios for 5G include enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), addressing human-centric use cases for access to multimedia content, services and data; ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) with strict requirements, especially in terms of latency and reliability; and massive machine type communications (mMTC) for a very large number of connected devices typically transmitting a relatively low volume of non-delay-sensitive data. The articles in this section present the most relevant scenarios, prominent research outcomes, and state-of-the-art advances of 5G systems for URLLC achieving the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) targets on latency and reliability requirements to successfully deliver delay-sensitive information. In 3GPP, the performance target for control plane latency is 10 ms, and for user plane latency it is 0.5 ms for downlink and uplink directions, separately.

Context-awareness has been successfully included in the mobile phone applications due mainly to the presence of numerous sensors and the access to several communication networks. Therefore, we present a Context-Aware Web content Generator Based on Personal Tracking, which uses the user context information obtained by mobile devices to generate content for a large number of web applications. While registering the trajectory followed by the mobile device, it allows users to create multimedia documents (e.g. photo, audio, video), which are connected to an enriched description of the user context (e.g. weather, location, date). Finally, all this data and documents are combined to produce a new content, which is published on the Web. We also show results of tests performed in a real scenario and describe our strategy to avoid battery overconsumption and memory overflow in mobile phones. Moreover, a user evaluation is presented in order to measure the system performance, in terms of precision and system overall usability. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
