McQ has developed a broad based capability to fuse information in a geographic area from multiple sensors to build a better understanding of the situation. The paper will discuss the fusion architecture implemented by McQ to use many sensors and share their information. This multi sensor fusion architecture includes data sharing and analysis at the individual sensor, at communications nodes that connect many sensors together, at the system server/user interface, and across multi source information available through networked services. McQ will present a data fusion architecture that integrates a "Feature information Base" (FIB) with McQ's well known Common Data Interchange Format (CDIF) data structure. The distributed multi sensor fusion provides enhanced situation awareness for the user.

Vision system designers often face the daunting challenge of implementing powerful image processing capabilities in severely size, weight and power constrained systems. Multi-sensor fusion, image stabilization, image enhancement, target detection and object tracking are fundamental processing techniques required by UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), smart cameras, weapon sights, and vehicle situational awareness systems. All of these systems also process non-vision data while communicating large amounts of information elsewhere. To meet their demanding requirements, Sarnoff developed the Acadia (R) II System-on-a- Chip, combining dedicated image processing cores, four ARM (R) 11 processors and an abundance of peripherals in a single Integrated Circuit. This paper will describe how to best use the power of the Acadia (R) II as both an all-in-one image processor and as a general purpose computer for performing other critical non-vision tasks, such as flight control and system-to-system communication.*

One of the most felt issues in the defence domain is that of having huge quantities of data stored in databases and acquired from field sensors, without being able to infer information from them. Usually databases are continuously updated with observations, and are related to heterogeneous data. Deep and continuous analysis on data could mine useful correlations, explain relations existing among data and cue searches for further evidences. The solution to the problem addressed before seems to deal both with the domain of Data Mining and with the domain of high level Data fusion, that is Situation Assessment, Threat Assessment and Process Refinement, also synthesised as Situation Awareness. The focus of this paper is the definition of an architecture for a system adopting data mining techniques to adaptively discover clusters of information and relation among them, to classify observations acquired and to use the model of knowledge and the classification derived in order to assess situations, threats and refine the search for evidences. Sources of information taken into account are those related to the intelligence domain, as IMINT, HUMINT, ELINT, COMINT and other non-conventional sources. The algorithms applied refer to not supervised and supervised classification for rule exploitation, and adaptively built Hidden Markov Model for situation and threat assessment.

A team of robots working to explore and map a space may need to share information about landmarks so as register local maps and to plan effective exploration strategies. In this paper we investigate the use of spatial histograms (spatiograms) as a common representation for exchanging landmark information between robots. Each robot can use sonar, stereo, laser and image information to identify potential landmarks. The sonar, laser and stereo information provide the spatial dimension of the spatiogram in a landmark-centered coordinate frame while video provides the image information. We call the result a terrain spatiogram. This representation can be shared between robots in a team to recognize landmarks and to fuse observations from multiple sensors or multiple platforms. We report experimental results sharing indoor and outdoor landmark information between a two different models of robot equipped with differently configured stereocameras and show that the terrain spatiogram (1) allows the robots to recognize landmarks seen only by the other with high confidence and, (2) allows multiple views of a landmark to be fused in a useful fashion. © 2009 SPIE.

Disparity and uncertainty of information sources are both significant problems in information fusion. This paper investigates the problem of disparity in general, and in conjunction with FLASH - a hybrid information-fusion cognitive-processing approach we developed. Different forms of disparity are identified and their categorization is presented, and their implications on the information fission process are discussed. The issue of feature-level vs. decision-level fusion is investigated, and the methods of coping with disparity within FLASH are presented. Source uncertainty estimation techniques are discussed as well. Disparity studies and the results of computational experiments related to them are presented. These studies are suggestive of the potential of the FLASH hybrid approach for fusion of disparate information sources.

In this work, simple, generic models of chemical sensing are used to simulate sensor array data and to illustrate the impact on overall system performance that specific design choices impart. The ability of multisensor systems to perform multianalyte detection (i.e., distinguish multiple targets) is explored by examining the distinction between fundamental design-related limitations stemming from mismatching of mixture composition to fused sensor measurement spaces, and limitations that arise from measurement uncertainty. Insight on the limits and potential of sensor fusion to robustly address detection tasks in realistic field conditions can be gained through an examination of a) the underlying geometry of both the composition space of sources one hopes to elucidate and the measurement space a fused sensor system is capable of generating, and b) the informational impact of uncertainty on both of these spaces. For instance, what is the potential impact on sensor fusion in an open world scenario where unknown interferants may contaminate target signals? Under complex and dynamic backgrounds, decision rules may implicitly become non-optimal and adding sensors may increase the amount of conflicting information observed. This suggests that the manner in which a decision rule handles sensor conflict can be critical in leveraging sensor fusion for effective open world sensing, and becomes exponentially more important as more sensors are added. Results and design considerations for handling conflicting evidence in Bayes and Dempster-Shafer fusion frameworks are presented. Bayesian decision theory is used to provide an upper limit on detector performance of simulated sensor systems.

Layered sensing systems involve operation of several layers of sensing with different capabilities integrated into one whole system. The integrated layers of sensing must share information and local decisions across layers for better situation awareness. This research focused on the development of a model for decision making and fusion at the information level in layered sensing systems using the cloud model for uncertainty processing. In this research, the addition of a new processing level to the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) processing model is proposed. The new processing level is called "information Assessment, fusion, and Control (IAFC)". Through this level, the different layers of a layered sensing system evaluate information about a given situation in terms of threat level and make a decision. The information assessment and control processing module were able to assess the threat level of a situation accurately and exchange assessments in order to determine the overall situation's threat level among all layers. The uncertain decisions were fused together to a unified decision using the cloud model of uncertainty processing methodology. Using this methodology, a cognitive element was added to the process of information assessment module leading to more accurate situation awareness.

Several surveillance applications are characterized by the ability to gather information about the scene from more than one sensor modality, and heterogeneous sensor data must then be fused by the decision-maker. hi this paper, we discuss the issues relevant to developing a model for fusion of information from audio and visual sensors, and present a framework to enhance decision-making capabilities. In particular, our methodology focuses on the issues of temporal reasoning, uncertainty representations, and coupling between features inferred from data streams coming from different sensors. We propose a conditional probability-based representation for uncertainty, along with fuzzy rules to assist decision-making, and a matrix representation of the coupling between sensor data streams. We also develop a fusion algorithm that utilizes these representations.

This paper describes a case study of relation derivation within the context of situation awareness. First we present a scenario in which inputs are supplied by a simulated Level 1 system. The inputs are events annotated with terms from an ontology for situation awareness. This ontology contains concepts used to represent and reason about situations. The ontology and the annotations of events are represented in DAML and Rule-NIL and then systematically translated to a formal method language called MetaSlang. Having all information expressed in a formal method language allows us to use a theorem prover, SNARK, to prove that a given relationship among the Level 1 objects holds (or that it does not hold). The paper shows a proof of concept that relation derivation in situation awareness can be done within a formal framework. It also identifies bottlenecks associated with this approach, such as the issue of the large number of potential relations that may have to be considered by the theorem prover. The paper discusses ways of resolving this as well as other problems identified in this study.

The correlation of information from disparate sources has long been an issue in data fusion research. Traditional data fusion addresses the correlation of information from sources as diverse as single-purpose sensors to all-source multi-media information. information system vulnerability information is similar in its diversity of sources and content, and in the desire to draw a meaningful conclusion, namely, the security posture of the system under inspection. FuzzyfusionTM A data fusion model that is being applied to the computer network operations domain is presented. This model has been successfully prototyped in an applied research environment and represents a next generation assurance tool for system and network security. © 2009 SPIE.
