In this work we investigate the relationships between features representing images, fusion schemes for these features and kernel types used in an Web-based Adaptive Image Retrieval System. Using the Kernel Rocchio learning method, several kernels having polynomial and Gaussian forms are applied to general images represented by annotations and by color histograms in RGB and HSV color spaces. We propose different fusion schemes, which incorporate kernel selector component(s). We perform experiments to study the relationships between a concatenated vector and several kernel types. Experimental results show that an appropriate kernel could significantly improve the performance of the retrieval system.

Many image fusion systems involving passive sensors require the accurate registration of the sensor data prior to performing fusion. Since depth information is not readily available in such systems, all registration algorithms are intrinsically approximations based upon various assumption about the depth field. Although often overlooked, many registration algorithms can break down in certain situations and this may adversely affect the image fusion performance. In this paper, we discuss a framework for quantifying the accuracy and robustness of image registration algorithms which allows a more precise understanding of their shortcomings. In addition, some novel algorithms have been investigated that overcome some of these limitations. A second aspect of this work has considered the treatment of images from multiple sensors whose angular and spatial separation is large and where conventional registration algorithms break down (typically greater than a few degrees of separation). A range of novel approaches is reported which exploit the use of parallax to estimate depth information and reconstruct a geometrical model of the scene. The imagery can then be combined with this geometrical model to render a variety of useful representations of the data. These techniques (which we term Volume Registration) show great promise as a means of gathering and presenting 3D and 4D scene information for both military and civilian applications.

As new imaging modalities arise, the problem of inpainting becomes increasing important. Typical techniques for inpainting are completely determined by the penalization term used in the optimization scheme. These methods range from minimizing over total variation to finding a sparsest solution in a given basis to minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau energy. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to inpainting of remote sensing images, which uses previous measurements taken from heterogeneous image soures in conjunction with these well studied penalization methods. These previous measurements could be images with different illumination or weather conditions, images with spatio-temporal changes, or even all together different imaging modalities. Our approach utilizes manifold learning techniques such as diffusion maps or Laplacian eigenmaps that are applied to each image. This is followed by learning a rotation between the two feature spaces in an effort to place data points from both images in a common feature space. Then, we apply a novel preimage algorithm to the fused data in conjunction with an inpainting penalization method to recreate the missing pixels.

A general method for time delay of arrival (TDOA) estimation for time-frequency information fusion is analyzed. This technique, for which the generalized cross correlation method and histogram methods are special cases, results in a low TDOA estimation error And high efficiency in computation. The proposed method relies on a non-linear phase-error selector function, which acts as a reward and punish method for the phase error at each frequency. Three different selector function candidates, consisting of cosine, rectangular, and triangular functions are analyzed using simulations. In the presence of Gaussian noise, the rectangular selector function performs better than the cosine at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) higher than 10dB while for lower SNRs the cosine function performs better. With speech noise, the cosine function, which corresponds to the generalized cross correlation technique, has higher anomaly percentages and higher root-mean-square errors than the rectangular function. This suggests, that in general, the rectangular selector function, which can be computed more easily than the cosine selector function, is superior technique to the generalized cross correlation method for. real-time applications.

It has been widely accepted that data fusion and information fusion methods can improve the accuracy and robustness of decision-making in structural health monitoring systems. It is arguably true nonetheless, that decision-level is equally beneficial when applied to integrated health monitoring systems. Several decisions at low-levels of abstraction may be produced by different decision-makers;however, decision-level fusion is required at the final stage of the process to provide accurate assessment about the health of the monitored system as a whole. An example of such integrated systems with complex decision-making scenarios is the integrated health monitoring of aircraft. Thorough understanding of the characteristics of the decision-fusion methodologies is a crucial step for successful implementation of such decision-fusion systems. In this paper, we have presented the major information fusion methodologies reported in the literature, i.e., probabilistic, evidential, and artificial intelligent based methods. The theoretical basis and characteristics of these methodologies are explained and their performances are analyzed. Second, candidate methods from the above fusion methodologies, i.e., Bayesian, Dempster-Shafer, and fuzzy logic algorithms are selected and their applications are extended to decisions fusion. Finally, fusion algorithms are developed based on the selected fusion methods and their performance are tested on decisions generated from synthetic data and from experimental data. Also in this paper, a modeling methodology, i.e. cloud model, for generating synthetic decisions is presented and used. Using the cloud model, both types of uncertainties;randomness and fuzziness, involved in real decision-making are modeled. Synthetic decisions are generated with an unbiased process and varying interaction complexities among decisions to provide for fair performance comparison of the selected decision-fusion algorithms. Local Bayesian fusion approaches aim to reduce high storage and computational costs of Bayesian fusion which is separated from fixed modeling assumptions. Using the small world formalism, we argue why this proceeding is conform with Bayesian theory. Then, we concentrate on the realization of local Bayesian fusion by focussing the fusion process solely on local regions that are task relevant with a high probability. The resulting local models correspond then to restricted versions of the original one. In a previous publication, we used bounds for the probability of misleading evidence to show the validity of the pre-evaluation of task specific knowledge and prior information which we perform to build local models. In this paper, we prove the validity of this proceeding using information theoretic arguments. For additional efficiency, local Bayesian fusion can be realized in a distributed manner. Here, several local Bayesian fusion tasks are evaluated and unified after the actual fusion process. For the practical realization of distributed local Bayesian fusion, software agents are predestinated. There is a natural analogy between the resulting agent based architecture and criminal investigations in real life. We show how this analogy can be used to improve the efficiency of distributed local Bayesian fusion additionally. Using a landscape model, we present an experimental study of distributed local Bayesian fusion in the field of reconnaissance, which highlights its high potential. © 2009 SPIE.

We consider the scenario where an autonomous platform that is searching or traversing a building may observe unstable masonry or may need to travel over unstable rubble. A purely behaviour-based system may handle these challenges but produce behaviour that works against long-terms goals such as reaching a victim as quickly as possible. We extend our work on ADAPT, a cognitive robotics architecture that incorporates 3D simulation and image fusion, to allow the robot to predict the behaviour of physical phenomena, such as falling masonry, and take actions consonant with long-term goals. We experimentally evaluate a cognitive only and reactive only approach to traversing a building filled with various numbers of challenges and compare their performance. The reactive only approach succeeds only 38% of the time, while the cognitive only approach succeeds 100% of the time. While the cognitive only approach produces very impressive behaviour, our results indicate how much better the combination of cognitive and behaviour-based can be.

In previous work, we have shown how a 3D model can be built in real time and synchronized with the environment. This world model permits a robot to predict dynamics in its environment and classify behaviors. In this paper we evaluate the effect of such a 3D model on the accuracy and speed of various computer vision algorithms, including tracking, optical flow and stereo disparity. We report results based on the KITTI database and on our own videos. © 2015 SPIE.

In this paper, we present a novel ICA domain multimodal image fusion algorithm. Conventional eigenbased algorithm was improved through weighting the transformed regions of input images and the use of a fusion metric to maximise the quality of the fused image. It is confirmed by experimental results that the proposed methods outperform the basic eigenbased methods and, in most cases, our own prior work on the DT-CWT method. For all the standard image fusion metrics, the proposed method obtains higher quality values than the standard eigenbased algorithms.

We propose using the smart antenna principle as the basis of a new design for smart optical receivers in LADAR systems. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of designing a LADAR system with a receiver consisting of an array of photodetectors, which leads to field-of-view enhancement and beamforming by fusing streams of video information received from the detectors. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate this design by fusing several video information streams from different fields of view using our Mathworks Simulinko model. The fusion algorithm uses the fuzzy logic maximum operation on the data output from the cameras.
