Currently there is no systematic framework for characterizing fused, multisensory systems, and therefore the comparison of multiple independent systems is difficult without extensive field-testing. Development of a framework would allow for theoretical comparisons and enable more rapid prototyping of fused sensor systems, guidance for design from existing sensor components, and more effective engineering of new sensors optimized for use in fused sensor systems. Recent research at NRL has focused on characterizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and mass spectrometry data for fused, multisensor applications to enhance chemical detection and discrimination in the presence of complex interfering backgrounds. An information theoretic approach has been used to elucidate the information content available from spectral data, quantify the ability of these sensing techniques to distinguish chemicals, and determine their susceptibility to noise and resolution limitations. The approach has also been applied to feature extraction and data fusion techniques on these data. Results characterizing the effectiveness of a fused multisensor system combining FTIR and mass spectrometry are presented.

This paper is about the fusion of multiple knowledge sources represented using default logic. More precisely, the focus is on solving the problem that occurs when the standard-logic knowledge parts of the sources are contradictory, as default theories trivialize in this case. To overcome this problem, several candidate policies are discussed. Among them, it is shown that replacing each formula belonging to minimally unsatisfiable subformulas by a corresponding supernormal default exhibits appealing features.

When an autonomous system has to act in or interact with an environment, a suitable representation of it is required. In the past decades, many different representation forms - especially spacial ones - have been proposed and even more information fusion techniques were developed in order to build these representations from multiple information sources. However, most of these algorithms do not exploit the full potential of the available information. This is caused by the fact that they are not able to handle the full complexity of all possible solutions compatible with the information and that they rely on restrictive assumptions (i.e. independencies) in order to make the computation feasible. In this work, a new methodology is envisioned that utilizes formal methods, in particular solvers for Pseudo-Boolean Optimization, to drop some of these assumptions. In order to illustrate the ideas, information fusion based on belief functions and occupancy grid maps are considered. It is shown that this approach allows for considering dependencies among multiple cells and thus significantly reduces the uncertainty in the resulting representation.

Signal-level image fusion has in recent years established itself as a useful tool for dealing with vast amounts of image data obtained by disparate sensors. In many modem multisensor systems, fusion algorithms significantly reduce the amount of raw data that needs to be presented or processed without loss of information content as well as provide an effective way of information integration. One of the most useful and widespread applications of signal-level image fusion is for display purposes. Fused images provide the observer with a more reliable and more complete representation of the scene than would be obtained through single sensor display configurations. In recent years, a plethora of algorithms that deal with the problem of fusion for display has been proposed. However, almost all are based on relatively basic processing techniques and do not consider information from higher levels of abstraction. As some recent studies have shown this does not always satisfy the complex demands of a human observer and a more subjectively meaningful approach is required. This paper presents a fusion framework based on the idea that subjectively relevant fusion could be achieved if information at higher levels of abstraction such as image edges and image segment boundaries are used to guide the basic signal-level fusion process. fusion of processed, higher level information to form a blueprint for fusion at signal level and fusion of information from multiple levels of extraction into a single fusion engine are both considered. When tested on two conventional signal-level fusion methodologies, such multi-level fusion structures eliminated undesirable effects such as fusion artefacts and loss of visually vital information that compromise their usefulness. Images produced by inclusion of multi-level information in the fusion process are clearer and of generally better quality than those obtained through conventional low-level fusion. The real-time fusion of imagery from two or more complementary sensors offers significant operational benefits for both operator-in-the-loop and automated processing systems. This paper reports on a new image fusion framework that can be used to maximise detection, recognition and identification performance within the context of low false-alarm rate operation. The Intelligent Image fusion (I2F) architecture presented here allows exploitation of data at the information level as well as at the pixel-level, and can do so in an adaptable and intelligent manner. In this paper the architecture is examined in terms of design, applicability to a range of tasks, and performance factors such as adaptability, flexibility and utility. The relationship between algorithm design and hardware implementation, and the consequential impact on system performance, is also reviewed. Particular consideration is given to size, weight and power constraints that exist for some systems and their implications for processing optimisation and implementation on different processing platforms. Results are presented from the outcome of quantitative studies, development programmes and system trials. © 2009 SPIE.

We consider the problem of distributed sensor information fusion by multiple autonomous robots within the context of landmine detection. We assume that different landmines can be composed of different types of material and robots are equipped with different types of sensors, while each robot has only one type of landmine detection sensor on it. We introduce a novel technique that uses a market-based information aggregation mechanism called a prediction market. Each robot is provided with a software agent that uses sensory input of the robot and performs calculations of the prediction market technique. The result of the agent's calculations is a 'belief' representing the confidence of the agent in identifying the object as a landmine. The beliefs from different robots are aggregated by the market mechanism and passed on to a decision maker agent. The decision maker agent uses this aggregate belief information about a potential landmine and makes decisions about which other robots should be deployed to its location, so that the landmine can be confirmed rapidly and accurately. Our experimental results show that, for identical data distributions and settings, using our prediction market-based information aggregation technique increases the accuracy of object classification favorably as compared to two other commonly used techniques.

In this work, an analytical model has been developed to demonstrate classification performance when fusing two quantized features. Specifically, it is of interest to demonstrate theoretically the effect that the overall quantization of the features, M, has on the relative performance of the Bayesian Data Reduction Algorithm (BDRA). The primary results show, and with a training data model independent of distribution, conditions on the data under which dimensionality reduction improves overall theoretical classification performance. This result is significant for those interested in the theoretical performance of fusing discrete data (i.e., attributes or classifier decisions), and is an important step towards proving that BDRA always converges to a unique solution.

This paper investigates methods of decision-making from uncertain and disparate data. The need for such methods arises in those sensing application areas in which multiple and diverse sensing modalities are available, but the information provided can be imprecise or only indirectly related to the effects to be discerned. Biological sensing for biodefense is an important instance of such applications. information fusion in that context is the focus of a research program now underway at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. The paper outlines a multi-level, multi-classifier recognition architecture developed within this program, and discusses its components. information source uncertainty is quantified and exploited for improving the quality of data that constitute the input to the classification processes. Several methods of sensor uncertainty exploitation at the feature-level are proposed and their efficacy is investigated. Other aspects of the program are discussed as well. While the primary focus of the paper is on biodefense, the applicability of concepts and techniques presented here extends to other multisensor fusion application domains.

Sensor data fusion is and has been a topic of considerable research, but rigorous and quantitative understanding of the benefits of fusing specific types of sensor data remains elusive. Often, sensor fusion is performed on an ad hoc basis with the assumption that overall detection capabilities will improve, only to discover later, after expensive and time consuming laboratory and/or field testing that little advantage was gained. The work presented here will discuss these issues with theoretical and practical considerations in the context of fusing chemical sensors with binary outputs. Results are given for the potential performance gains one could expect with such systems, as well as the practical difficulties involved in implementing an optimal Bayesian fusion strategy with realistic scenarios. Finally, a discussion of the biases that inaccurate statistical estimates introduce into the results and their consequences is presented.
