The widespread usage of harmful pulsed laser sources emitting brief but intense radiations implies to search for appropriate and convenient forms of protection. Nonlinear optical nanomaterials can serve this purpose when properly embedded in a solid medium, resulting in nanohybrid passive optical limiting filters. This work focuses on the optical limiting behavior of polymer-dye nonlinear nanohybrids, for which we combined azophloxine, a red azo-dye, with two polymer hosts, namely PMMA and polylactide (PLA). Transmittance measurements in the nonlinear regime were performed at the wavelength of 1064 nm with nanosecond pulses at a low pulse repetition rate. The nonlinear optical properties resulting from energy dependent transmittance assessments reveal that the dye concentration is of major relevance regarding the PMMA nanohybrids, and to a lesser extend for the PLA based systems. The PLA synthesis concept described in this study offers an easy way to directly attach the dye covalently to the polymer chain. The originality and novelty of this synthesis technique is to be pointed out since it has never been mentioned elsewhere to date. For the various types of nanohybrids investigated, significant differences in the optical limiting response were observed. A molecular model claiming for the dye aggregation in the PMMA nanohybrids is discussed. Two different absorption regimes responsible for the optical limiting action have been identified to be reverse saturable - excited state absorption on the one hand and multi-photons absorption on the other hand.

This article focuses on the analysis of the selected optical coupler parameter which have been thermal stressed for 30 weeks at temperature 95 degrees C +/- 5 degrees C. optical couplers with 10:90, 1:99 and 50:50 dividing ratio were tested. A total of 6 optical couplers were tested. Measurements were made for two wavelengths 1310 nm and 1550 nm. The observed parameter was the insertion loss. The insertion loss is very important parameter because the fiber-optic passive components (such as optical couplers) disrupt signal transmissions as the continuous core of the optical fiber carrying the signal mates with the component in a manner that causes some amount of scattering and reflection of light waves. The degree to which the signal has been depleted is described as insertion loss, which is the undesired attenuation of the signal measured in decibels (dB).

The article reports the development of invisible cryptography writing and latent fingerprint detection techniques using upconversion emission of rare earth doped ceramic for the application in forensic science. The upconversion (UC) emission studies on Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped Sb2O3-WO3-Li2O (SWL) ceramics under 980 nm laser excitation has been done. Due to its intense green and red visible emission, the ceramic finds a great application in developing latent fingermark detection using powder dusting technique. In addition to fingerprint detection, the present ceramic is a promising candidate for coding cyphers in invisible manner. An observed comparison between UV vs. NIR excited fingerprint images shows that fingerprint images exposed by NIR excitation have more clear edges than the UV excitations. Hence the current upconversion emission studies on the present ceramic samples reveal its potential application in forensic science, security writing and cryptography information (cypher).

The real manifestations of biowarfare were only during local military conflicts. In previous times the danger with this factor forms through activation of terrorist organizations. To prevent non-desirable consequences and to preserve the lives and health of people it is necessary to provide constant control by the application of complex of the new generation of the instrumental devices based on the principles of biosensorics which allow rapid revealing step by step: total toxicity of environmental objects, presence of appropriate groups and specific chemical substances among them. It is demonstrated simple and rapid estimation of the total toxicity through the control of the intensity of chlorophyll fluorescence (IChF) by the direct or remote ways by the device "Floratest" (Ukraine). There is possible on the basis of IChF curve of growing plants from some territory during appropriate period to reveal appearance of toxic substances in this area. Their presence in more local cases may be done by using bioluminescent bacteria (pure Ukrainian strains) or/and controlling short term Daphnia living medium by developed portable chemiluminometer. For the revealing of some groups of toxic elements it is recommended the cerium oxide ISFETs based enzymatic biosensors. The last and devices based on SPR ("Plasmotest", Ukraine), porous silicon (with the registration of biospecific interaction macromolecules by luminescence or electro conductivity) and some nano-metal oxides were realized in immune biosensors at the determination of content of number of mycotoxins, some microorganisms (Salmonella spp.) and diagnostics of viral disease (retroviral leucosis). We present the main characteristics of the above mentioned devices and give confirmation that all the analysis meets practice demands. Overall time of analysis is in range 10 min and it is very simple and may be realized in field conditions.

Authors of this article focused on the utilization of fiber optic sensors based on interferometric measurements for securing entrance areas of buildings such as windows and doors. We described the implementation of the fiber-optic interferometer (type Mach-Zehnder) into the window frame or door, sensor sensitivity, analysis of the background noise and methods of signal evaluation. The advantage of presented solution is the use of standard telecommunication fiber standard G.652. D, high sensitivity, immunity of sensor to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and passivity of the sensor regarding power supply. Authors implemented the Graphical User Interface (GUI) which offers the possibility of remote monitoring presented sensing solution.

Public transport security is one of the main priorities of the public authorities when fighting against crime and terrorism. In this context, there is a great demand for autonomous systems able to detect abnormal events such as violent acts aboard passenger cars and intrusions when the train is parked at the depot. To this end, we present an innovative approach which aims at providing efficient automatic event detection by fusing video and audio analytics and reducing the false alarm rate compared to classical stand-alone video detection. The multi-modal system is composed of two microphones and one camera and integrates onboard video and audio analytics and fusion capabilities. On the one hand, for detecting intrusion, the system relies on the fusion of "unusual" audio events detection with intrusion detections from video processing. The audio analysis consists in modeling the normal ambience and detecting deviation from the trained models during testing. This unsupervised approach is based on clustering of automatically extracted segments of acoustic features and statistical Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) modeling of each cluster. The intrusion detection is based on the three-dimensional (3D) detection and tracking of individuals in the videos. On the other hand, for violent events detection, the system fuses unsupervised and supervised audio algorithms with video event detection. The supervised audio technique detects specific events such as shouts. A GMM is used to catch the formant structure of a shout signal. Video analytics use an original approach for detecting aggressive motion by focusing on erratic motion patterns specific to violent events. As data with violent events is not easily available, a normality model with structured motions from non-violent videos is learned for one-class classification. A fusion algorithm based on Dempster-Shafer's theory analyses the asynchronous detection outputs and computes the degree of belief of each probable event.

This paper presents the comparison of fibre-optic Bragg Grating Sensor with the commercially available probes for heart sounds measurement based on microphones. The analysis of the sensitivity and specificity was carried out to assess the efficacy of the individual measuring probes. Since fibre-optic sensing uses light in optical fibre rather than electricity, it solves the limitations of electrical sensors such as transmission loss and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Experimental results have shown that Fibre-Optic Bragg Grating Sensor significantly outperforms the devices using the microphones. Moreover, the sensor embedded in polydimethylsiloxane polymer and is fixed on the thorax by means of elastic belt. The material is biocompatible and immune to electromagnetic interference, which is major advantage for the healthcare environment. The probe dimensions are small;therefore, it would be convenient for the patient and easily implemented into clinical practice. Nevertheless, the signal processing methods must be applied to separate the desired signal from the environmental noise.

Fiber-optic sensors are one of the dynamically developing areas of photonics and photonic applications. This group of sensors can also include fiber-optic interferometers which enable very sensitive sensing. They are entirely passive regarding power supply, and immune to electromagnetic interference. This type of sensor is dependent on the phase change. It mostly used in the field which requires high measurement accuracy. We can achieve a change of sensitivity in the order of 10-8. The fundamental problem of fiber-optic interferometry is a design and imposition (encapsulation) of the measuring arm and reference arm of the interferometer. Polydimethylsiloxane elastomer (PDMS) is one of the possibilities to encapsulation of the sensory arm. Two-component PDMS Sylgard 184 is used type. The article analyzes the effect of encapsulation into a PDMS of the measuring arm of the interferometer to frequency response and sensitivity of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with the division of power in a ratio of 1: 1 (measuring arm and reference arm). Input power set to a reference value of 1 mW, this value was constant for all performed experimental measurements. The generator of a harmonic signal with fixed amplitude signal used for analysis of the frequency characteristic of the interferometer. The application written in LabView development environment, evaluated the amplitude-frequency spectra of the signal. Repeated test of assembled prototype verified the measured results.
