This paper proposes a new motion-compensated frame (field) interpolation algorithm for frame (field) rate upconversion, which allows us to interpolate frame (or pairs of fields) between two originally continuous frames (fields) of a digital television sequence by preserving the stationary background. First, for a interlace format, the de-interlacing process was used to reduce the motion range after converting the interlace format to progressive one. A video scene can be temporally categorized by the change detector into changed and unchanged regions. Each changed region is further separated into moving objects, covered and uncovered regions. To interpolate the intermediate field (frame), we have developed direct motion interpolation method and indirect motion interpolation method to fill the moving object areas in the changed regions, and then apply the forward/backward motion extrapolation method to fill the covered/uncovered regions. Finally the hybrid repetition is used to interpolate the unchanged regions. In the experiment, we will show the interpolated fields and frames for two standard image sequences.

High-speed analog optoelectronicimageprocessingsystems are generally characterized by low accuracy and are not well suited to applications requiring large dynamic range. We show that the low accuracy of a typical analog optoelectronic convolver can be tolerated in a high-accuracy application when threshold decomposition is used to perform order-statistic processing on digitized gray-scale imagery. The robustness of the method in the presence of system noise, combined with the parallelism of the optical convolver, suggests that hybrid analog optical/digital electronic processors for order-statistic imageprocessing may be attractive alternatives to all-electronic processors. We analyze the immunity of such a hybrid processor to noise generated by spatial variations of emitter and photodetector arrays for the order-statistic operations of median filtering, dilation, and erosion.

This paper presents the algorithm of an IR image track system, its hardware and software design. TMS32020 (or C25), as the main tools of imageprocessing, makes the IRI track experiment system closed-loop. Track algorithm and processing speed are tested in the dynamic tracking situation. The experiment results show that the system can track the target in real-time, the period from collecting data to the output of the track control signal is less than 8.5 ms, and with a good ability to resist noise and disturbance.

This paper presents a comparative performance evaluation of three signalprocessing architectures for the point-target detection problem in infrared surveillance systems. The comparison involves an adaptive linear spatial filter of the least-mean-square (LMS) type, with a median subtraction filter, and a morphological based processor. The median and morphological filters are nonlinear operators that are based on the order-statistics of the input samples. The three architectures are exercised, via computer simulation, against real deterministic data sets comprising a range of horizon backgrounds. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are presented and provide a quantitative measure for the performance comparison. Some advantages and disadvantages of each filter type are indicated, with recommendations for a hybrid architecture which incorporates the different filtering schemes.

Present day imaging systems exhibit many problems, such as, low temporal and lateral resolution, operator dependence, high cost and complexity etc. The new system described is an attempt to address these problems by combining the desirable features of a range of techniques including digitally controlled phased-array scanning, wide-band analog processing in multiple channels and acousto-opticalimage reconstruction with on-line image enhancement techniques. The resulting hybrid system is capable of operating in B-scan, sector scan and focused scan modes in pseudo real-time. A fiber optic based wide-word personality ROM capable of data rates in excess of 125 Mbs has been constructed and tested. Because of the special fan-out characteristics of optical devices, the optoelectronic ROM is capable of operating in a wide-word regime that is inaccessible to all-electronic ROMs. The principle of operation permits n electrical control bits to select among 2n groups of p optical output bits. In theory, each output word of width p can consist of thousands of bits. The device constitutes a high-speed electro-optic control system permitting a small number of electrical bits to control a geometrically larger number of optical output bits.
