We study a hybrid optoelectronic architecture for pattern recognition. In this architecture, a multichannel correlator realizes feature extractions on the analyzed image while an electronic neural network (NN) performs the high-level pattern recognition task. Due to its in situ learning and adaptive capabilities, the NN provides an efficient way for full exploitation of the computational power of optical processors. Indeed, not only the theoretical transfer function of the pattern recognition system is realized but also the imperfections of the analog optical computation are learned in the processor. The potential of this approach is illustrated on a simple multiclass problem of robotic classification. precise comparisons with different techniques of filter synthesis for the feature extraction performed by the multichannel correlator are carefully analyzed. An optical implementation based on a joint transform correlator using a photorefractive crystal is presented.

A hybrid optical/digital processor has been developed that computes both the magnitude and phase of the bispectrum for wide bandwidth RF signals. The overall optical architecture is that of a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer which contains three acousto-optic modulators and appropriate transforming lenses. The intensity distribution in the output plane of the interferometer contains an interference term which represents the real part of the bispectrum multiplied by a spatial carrier (the interference fringes). To isolate the bispectrum information, the output image is digitized and digitally filtered. The imaginary part of the bispectrum is obtained by Hilbert transforming the real part, and the bispectrum magnitude and phase are then computed. We demonstrate the performance of the processor with three different test signal sets where the signals have a bandwidth of either 6 MHz or 12 MHz. The test results illustrate the successful recovery of magnitude and phase information for the bispectrum of quadratically related signals.

Vision processing is one of the most computationally intensive tasks required of an autonomous robot. The data flow from a single typical imaging sensor is roughly 60 Mbits/sec, which can easily overload current on-board processors. optical correlator-based processing can be used to perform many of the functions required of a general robotic vision system, such as object recognition, tracking, and orientation determination, and can perform these functions fast enough to keep pace with the incoming sensor data. We describe a hybrid digital electronic/analog optical robotic vision processing system developed at Ames Research Center to test concepts and algorithms for autonomous construction, inspection, and maintenance of space-based habitats. We discuss the system architecture design and implementation, its performance characteristics, and our future plans. In particular, we compare the performance of the system to a more conventional all digital electronic system developed concurrently. The hybrid system consistently outperforms the digital electronic one in both speed and robustness.

A hybrid ATR system using DataCube signal processing and imaging boards controlled by a host Sun workstation is described. The input image preprocessor includes detection algorithms that locate candidate targets in a simulated or real IR scene and segmentation algorithms that generate target outlines which are normalized for recognition processing by an optical correlator. Target detection performs a raster scan over the image using nested boxes to find detection pixels based on intensity/variance contrasts. Segmentation operates on windows centered at the centroids of connected components of detection pixels. Optimal thresholds are determined from gray scale histograms. Multimodal optimization seeks to maximize edge/boundary proximities for candidate target and island components obtained by thresholding with respect to the optimal thresholds. Relaxation smooths the boundaries of optimal target components or merged target/island components. Normalization algorithms scale and center the component boundaries. The overall detection algorithm performance was acceptable for all except low contrast scenes. The FAR was good. On the other hand, the probability of detection was too low. The recognition performance (including segmentation) on detected targets was excellent in comparison with other contractors.

This paper presents the design of a mixed digital/analog array to implement several signal processing algorithms used in coordinate rotation for image processing. The advantages of hybrid arrays in which the processor element can be either analog or digital depending on a specific computing requirement are discussed. The interfaces between processor elements of different types are considered and several circuits are designed for this task. The proposed mixed array architecture is shown to possess strong potential in other high-performance computing applications.

This paper reviews digital optical computing architectures for cellular array processing. Some generalizations such as the cellular hypercube are discussed, and binary image algebra (BIA) is summarized as an analysis, synthesis and programming aid for cellular processors. A particular digital optical cellular image processor (DOCIP) design is presented along with its experimental opto-electronic implementation. Some concepts for "smart-pixel" spatial light mod-ulators which combine optical sources and detectors with high speed electronic logic are given, and their use in optoelectronic processors having holographic or other optical interconnection elements is outlined. © 2017 SPIE.

The spatially-scanning, 2D, time-integrating hybrid interferometric processors presented employ directly-modulated CW laser diodes as input sources and are applicable to complex SAR data processing in real time. Crossed acoustooptic cells scan the input signal over a virtual 2D input space, and an optical interference pattern is detected with a solid-state detector array camera. Continuous transfer of the frames of integrated interference from the camera to a digital image processor, overall dynamic range is increased over that of the camera alone. Envelope detection in the display circuitry generates a continuous real-time representation of image magnitude.

We previously developed an image reconstruction display for reconstructing images compressed by our hybrid compression algorithm. The hybrid algorithm, which improves image quality, applies Discrete Cosine Transform coding (DCT) and Block Truncation Coding (BTC) adaptively to an image, according to its local properties. This reconstruction display receives the compressed data from the host computer through a BMC channel and quickly reconstructs good quality images using a pipeline-based microprocessor. This paper describes a prototype of a system for compression and reconstruction of medical images. It also describes the architecture of the image compression processor, one of the components of the system. This system consists of the image compression processor, a host main-frame computer and reconstruction displays. Under this system, distributed processing in the image compression processor and the image reconstruction displays reduces the load on the host computer, and supplies an environment where the control routines for PACS and the hospital information system (HIS) can co-operate. The compression processor consists of a maximum of four parallel compression units with communication ports. In this architecture, the hybrid algorithm, which includes serial operations, can be processed at high speed by communicating the internal data. In experiments, the compression system proved effective: the compression processor compressed a 1k x 1k image in about 2 seconds using four compression units. The three reconstruction displays showed the image at almost the same time. Display took less than 7 seconds for the compressed image, compared with 28 seconds for the original image.

optical signal-processing techniques are applied to the problem of multispectral data fusion for image recognition. A hybrid architecture that combines the large processing bandwidth of two-dimensional optical correlators with the programmability of a digital controller and the memory capacity of an electronic knowledge base is proposed. The problems of calculating the optimal channel weights and normalizing the correlation peak energy are addressed, and the relationship between the number of channels and detection performance is defined. Finally, the development of a spatial light modulator is outlined for use as an adaptive filter for optical correlation.
