optoelectronic-VLSI systems can provide high bandwidth multimedia applications and real-time parallel processing using the complementary properties of electronics and optics. Optics has many advantages in high-speed data transfer including inherent low crosstalk and low power, while electronics is more suitable for logic functions and integrated circuitry. In this research, we present designs and demonstrations of optoelectronic-VLSI systems based on two different approaches: a modular integration, and a monolithic integration. Both approaches deal with the optimal integration of optoelectronic devices for high-speed, high-throughput network communications and data processing. We have designed and tested a modular optoelectronic-VLSI system called translucent smart pixel array (Transpar). The system includes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) receiver, and an interlaced array of 4 x 4 vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) detectors. The FPGA allows for reconfigurable networks and processors, thus Transpar can implement dynamic novel network protocols. The components are mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) for testing of various optical interconnection techniques. Bulk lenses, diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and fiber image guides (FIGs) were tested and compared as interconnection techniques for the Transpar system. A detailed wave-propagation simulation for the FIGs is presented and compared with experimental results. The effect of optical crosstalk and minimization of the overall power dissipation are also considered. One technique for the monolithic integration of mixed-signal integrated circuits with optoelectronics is Ultra-thin Silicon-on-Sapphire (UTSi) technology. We describe the architecture of a three-dimensional image display comprised of a helical surface, which is kept rotating about its axis. The images are projected by means of a high performance digital mirror array, working in a SIMD parallel mode. The optical ray emanating from each mirror would intersect with the rotating surface at a 3D point whose 3D position is determined by the exact time of the emission. Recent advancements in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), micro opto electromechanical systems (MOEMS) and CMOS fabrication processes offer the potential to fabricate these SIMD steerable high performance mirror arrays with in situ memory. We focus on the architecture of a scalable video stream display, in which the end user consumption may vary from a simple television to a multiview visualization of 3D dynamic events.

Fault detection and feature analysis in interferometric fringe patterns by the application of wavelet filters in convolution processors

The detection and classification of faults is a major task for optical nondestructive testing in industrial quality control. Interferometric fringes, obtained by real-time optical measurement methods, contain a large amount of image data with information about possible defect features. This mass of data must be reduced for further evaluation. One possible way is the filtering of these images by applying the adaptive wavelet transform, which has been proved to be a capable tool in the detection of structures with definite spatial resolution. In this paper we show the extraction and classification of disturbances in interferometric fringe patterns, the application of several wavelet functions with different parameters for the detection of faults, and the combination of wavelet filters for fault classification. Examples of fringe patterns of known and varying fault parameters are processed showing the trend of the extracted features in order to draw conclusions concerning the relation between the feature, the filter parameter, and the fault attributes. Real-time processing was achieved by importing video sequences in a hybrid optoelectronic system with digital image processing and an optical correlation module. The optical correlator system is based on liquid-crystal spatial light modulators, which are addressed with image and filter data. Results of digital simulation and optical realization are compared. We describe the design, fabrication and functionality of two different 0.5 micron CMOS optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) chips based on the Peregrine Semiconductor Ultra-Thin Silicon (UTSi®) on insulator technology. The Peregrine UTSi silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) technology is a member of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) family. The low-loss synthetic sapphire substrate is optically transparent and has good thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion properties, which meet the requirements for flip-chip bonding of VCSELs and other optoelectronic input-output components. One chip contains transceiver and network components, including four channel high-speed CMOS transceiver modules, pseudo-random bit stream (PRBS) generators, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and other test circuits. The transceiver chips can operate in both self-testing mode and networking mode. An on-chip clock and true-single-phase-clock (TSPC) D-flip-flop have been designed to generate a PRBS at over 2.5 Gb/s for the high-speed transceiver arrays to operate in self-testing mode. In the networking mode, an even number of transceiver chips forms a ring network through free-space or fiber ribbon interconnections. The second chip contains four channel optical time-division multiplex (TDM) switches, optical transceiver arrays, an active pixel detector and additional test devices. The eventual applications of these chips will require monolithic OEICs with integrated optical input and output. After fabrication and testing, the CMOS transceiver array dies will be packaged with 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), and metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) or GaAs p-i-n detector die arrays to achieve high-speed optical interconnections. The hybrid technique could be either wire bonding or flip-chip bonding of the CMOS SOS smart-pixel arrays with arrays of VCSELs and photodetectors onto an optoelectronic chip carrier as a multi-chip module (MCM).

A method reception of images, preprocessing of images and image analysis concern to these problems. optoelectronic element base is optimally to use for *** of such algorithms. The selection of necessary methods for preprocessing images is a task ofthis activity. Also circuitry for the optical integral circuit (OIC) needs to be offered. It should realize these methods. Also knowhowfis needed to be offered for such OIC.

The mutual influence of the spatial and temporal parameters variations has been considered for the optical information processing systems. These parameters general dependence on the system physical units has also been considered. The possibilities to optimize the systems due to the more important parameter improvement at expense of less important one (spatial parameter at expense of temporal one or vice versa) have been estimated and the possibilities to improve both kinds of the parameters simultaneously have been searched.

Multispectral thermal imaging considerably facilitates observation and identification of thermal objects. The transition from separate imaging to the complex imaging in various ranges of spectrum raises efficiency of this process. Under the word "complex" authors mean the image formed from the several "primary" images, received in several spectral zones. The variants of multispectral devices design, arising problems and ways for their overcoming are considered in this paper. A number of original units for image primary processing is proposed. It is offered to use a vidicon TV camera and a pyrovidicon IR camera as a base for the complex imaging system. Authors have opinion that application of these cameras is the most expedient at the moment.

There has been an explosion of recent interest concerning information theory in optoelectronic (OE) systems. This interest has been motivated in part by (1) the accelerating deployment of OE components into digital systems, (2) the blurring of the analog-digital interface within many OE applications, and (3) the increasing sophistication and complexity of computational tools. These trends are being driven by revolutionary improvements in both OE devices and electronic processors together with increasing demand for high-speed and high-capacity solutions. This feature addresses the application of information- and communication-theoretic concepts, algorithms, and techniques to important problems in OE system analysis and design. The methods of sensibilization of self-processing photopolymer for holographic recording in the spectral range 500-700 nn have been developed. Two new compositions PPC-520 and PPC-650 were developed in a result of change of the initiatior system and modification of monomer component in the basis PPC-488. New PPC are offered to manufacture of various holographic elements : gratings, lenses and spatial optical filters for the pattern recognition schemes.
