A concept for a parallel digitalsignal processor based on optical interconnections and optoelectronic VLSI circuits is presented. It is shown that the proper combination of optical communication, architecture, and algorithms allows a throughput that outperforms purely electronic solutions. The usefulness of low-level algorithms from the add-and-shift class is emphasized. These algorithms lead to fine-grain, massively parallel on-chip processor architectures with high demands for optical off-chip interconnections. A comparative performance analysis shows the superiority of a bit-serial architecture. This architecture is mapped onto an optoelectronic three-dimensional circuit, and the necessary optical interconnection scheme is specified. (C) 1998 optical Society of America.

We describe the digital subsystem of a hybrid (digital/optical) vision system. The digitalprocessing includes feature extraction, projection of an object's model through a camera model, space-domain correlation of the model feature with the observed feature map, and a constrained solution that minimizes errors in the fit between modeled and observed features by using a gradient search routine, The digitalprocessing refines the coarse information from the optical processor. Examples will be shown of the degree to which the digital system can refine the precision of the optical estimate and how the optical pre-processing can provide a starting pose for the gradient search, thus minimizing the likelihood of the process's catching on a local minimum in the cost function.

We describe the optical correlator subsystem of a hybrid (digital/optical) vision system. The optical correlator has a Kopin SLIM at the input plane and a fast analog nematic Boulder Nonlinear systems SLM at the filter plane. Filters are computed to provide identification and pose estimation for various objects. Spatial non-uniformities in the filter SLM are particularly bothersome from an operational standpoint. Methods of measuring and accommodating for the nonuniformities are described. Correlation filters produce an initially coarse identification, and later filters are intended to refine the coarse estimate of the pose of the observed object. Certain image preprocessing operations and their results are discussed;these include the cross-correlation that results when a Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) image is used as input to the system whose filter has been computed for a Sobel edge-extracted version of the reference image.

digital information services such as multimedia systems and data communications require the processing and transfer of tremendous amount of data. These data need to be stored, accessed and delivered efficiently and reliably at high speed for various user applications. This represents a great challenge for current electronic systems. Electronics is effective in providing high performance processing and computation, but its input/outputs (I/Os) bandwidth is unable to scale with its processing power. The signal I/Os or interconnections are needed between processors and input devices, between processors for multiprocessor systems, and between processors and storage devices. Novel chip-to-chip interconnect technologies are needed to meet this challenge. This work integrates optoelectronic technologies for chip-to-chip interconnects and parallel pipeline processing. Photonic and electronic technologies are complementary to each other in the sense that electronics is more suitable for high-speed, low cost computation, and photonics is more suitable for high-bandwidth information transmission. Smart pixel technology uses electronics for logic switching and optics for chip-to-chip interconnects, thus combining the abilities of photonics and electronics nicely. This work describes both vertical and horizontal integration of smart pixel technologies for chip-to-chip optical interconnects and its applications. We present smart pixel VLSI designs in both hybrid CMOS/MQW smart pixel and monolithic GaAs smart pixel technologies. We use the CMOS/MQW technology for smart pixel array cellular logic (SPARCL) processors for SIMD parallel pipeline processing. We have tested the chip and constructed a prototype system for device characterization and system demonstration. We have verified the functionality of the system and characterized the electrical functions of the chip and the optoelectronic properties of the MQW devices. We have developed algorithms that utilize SPARCL for various i

The model of the robot vision system for image centering contained the joint transform correlator (JTC) with a phase-encoded input is proposed. The algorithm for an image centering and tracking realized with the robot vision system is considered. The principle of the image tracking algorithm is discussed. The theoretical analysis of the proposed system for the phase-encoded binary rectangular image entered to the JTC input is carried out. Equations for calculation the autocorrelation peaks and differential signal at the JTC output are obtained. Dependencies between geometric parameters of the moving phase-encoded input image (object) and output signal magnitudes are found. Possibilities of the proposed system for a scale- and rotation- invariant object centering are briefly considered.

Application of acousto-optical cells in optoelectronicsystems for signalprocessing allows to realise a high-speed data input and to provide the real-time signalopticalprocessing. The nature of acousto-optical cells permits to realize the processing of only one dimensional data massive. But principal possibility of hybridoptoelectronicsystems creating for two dimensional data massives processing (on the base of acousto-optical cells in the combination with spatial divided matrix-array photodetector and special phase shift optical elements) exists. We propose to utilize the optical astigmatic element in an acousto-optic device for obtaining the simultaneous time delay and frequency multichannel processing. For this purpose we create the acousto-optic device for spatial data processing on the base of acousto-optic cells in the combination with matrix-array photodetector and special phase shift optical elements. Investigation of the acousto-optic device characteristics is carred out.

We propose an optical-digital method and describe an experiment on finger-prints identification. The identification is based on comparing feature-vectors of small dimensionality (16 components) obtained via expanding directions fields for each finger-print (four directions are extracted) in terms the Hadamard basis. The employment of the operation of "partial" images ortogonalization in the course of directions field calculation has made it possible to enhance the reliability of identification.
