Performance analysis integration in the Uintah software development cycle

The increasing complexity of high-performance computing environments and programming methodologies presents challenges for empirical performance evaluation. Evolving parallel and distributed systems require performance technology that can be flexibly configured to observe different events and associated performance data of interest. It must also be possible to integrate performance evaluation techniques with the programming paradigms and software engineering methods. This is particularly important for tracking performance on parallel software projects involving many code teams over many stages of development. This paper describes the integration of the TAU and XPARE tools in the Uintah Computational Framework (UCF). Discussed is the use of performance mapping techniques to associate low-level performance data to higher levels of abstraction in UCF and the use of performance regression testing to provide a historical portfolio of the evolution of application performance. A scalability study shows the benefits of integrating performance technology in building large-scale parallel applications.

As computational devices continue to advance, there are reasons to examine their foundations a little more deeply, and to ask whether there may not be something more to be found. The fundamental manner in which hardware and software interact is poorly understood, and yet there is little indication in the literature that this is being discussed or explored. In spite of our technological achievements, we are at a loss to precisely define the boundaries between hardware and software, and to describe the nature of their interface. This paper aims to raise some of the major issues and questions, to propose a hardware-information duality, and to suggest directions in which further research might be pursued.

Multi-domain unified modeling is an important development direction in the study of complex system. Modelica is a popular multi-modeling language. It describes complex systems by mathematical equations, solves the high-index of Differential algebraic equations (DAE) generated by modeling. But in this process, the index reduction based on structural index, which is a key step of solving high-index DAE, will fail with small probability. Based on the combinatorial optimization theory, it analyzes the incorrect problem leaded by the index reduction algorithm for solving the DAE, gives the algorithm of detecting and correcting the incorrect of structural index reduction for matrix pencils. It implements the algorithm of detecting and correcting, and apply the algorithm into solving first-order linear time-invariant DAE system. The experiment result shows that for first-order linear time-invariant DAE, the problem about the failure of structural index reduction can be solved by the combinatorial optimization theory.

Embedded designers now have the capability of offloading software routines into custom applicationspecific hardware blocks. This paper evaluates a domain-specific design system for configurable computing platforms that combine processors and configurable fabrics. Although the proposed work uses floating-point and communication primitives as the specific domain tasks evaluated, the reconfigurable computing platform and the design challenges addressed will become increasingly common in a number of embedded system environments. This paper explores the added cost of hardware resources, area, and power of moving software library routines into hardware blocks in a configurable embedded system based on the MicroBlaze soft processor.

The paper presents a model that is useful for developing resource allocation algorithms for distributed real-time systems that operate in dynamic environments. Interesting aspects of the model include dynamic environments, utility and service levels, which provide a means for graceful degradation in resource-constrained situations and support optimization of the allocation of resources. The paper also provides an allocation algorithm that illustrates how to use the model for producing feasible, optimal resource allocations. © 2003 IEEE.

OpenMP has emerged as an important model and language extension for shared-memory parallel programming. On shared-memory platforms, OpenMP offers an intuitive, incremental approach to parallel programming. In this paper, we present techniques that extend the ease of shared-memory parallel programming in OpenMP to distributedmemory platforms as well. First, we describe a combined compile-time/runtime system that uses an underlying software distributed Shared Memory System and exploits repetitive data access behavior in both regular and irregular program sections. We present a compiler algorithm to detect such repetitive data references and an API to an underlying software distributed shared memory system to orchestrate the learning and proactive reuse of communication patterns. Second, we introduce a direct translation of standard OpenMP into MPI message-passing programs for execution on distributed memory systems. We present key concepts and describe techniques to analyze and efficiently handle both regular and irregular accesses to shared data. Finally, we evaluate the performance achieved by our approaches on representative OpenMP applications. © 2007 IEEE.

software distributed Shared Memory (DSM) systems can be used to provide a coherent shared address space on multicomputers and other parallel systems without support for shared memory in hardware. The coherency software automatically translates shared memory accesses to explicit messages exchanged among the nodes in the system. Many applications exhibit a good performance on such systems but it has been shown that performance critical messages can be delayed behind less important messages because of the enqueuing behavior in the communication libraries used in current systems. We present in this paper a new portable communication library that supports priorities to remedy this situation. We describe an implementation of the communication library and a quantitative model that is used to estimate the performance impact of priorities for a typical situation. Using the model, we show that the use of high-priority communication reduces the latency of performance critical messages substantially over a wide range of network design parameters. The latency is reduced with up to 10-25% for each delaying low priority message in the queue ahead. © 2001 IEEE.

Performance debugging and prediction for parallel systems is a difficult problem. The difficulties in identifying performance bottlenecks stem from the need for an intimate understanding of the underlying architecture. It has been recognized that portability is an important requirement for parallel program development. However, this makes the task of performance debugging even more difficult. In this paper, we present a simulation based approach for performance prediction of portable parallel programs. We demonstrate it using Charm: a message driven programming environment, which provides program portability across a variety of shared and distributed memory MIMD parallel systems. The proposed approach makes it possible to use a single debugging environment for the development of portable parallel software. This environment can provide correctness and performance debugging support that provides the developer with valuable feedback for improving program performance.

The high-performance requirements needed to implement the most advanced functionalities of current and future Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) are challenging the development processes of CPSs. On one side, CPSs rely on model-driven engineering (MDE) to satisfy the non-functional constraints and to ensure a smooth and safe integration of new features. On the other side, the use of complex parallel and heterogeneous embedded processor architectures becomes mandatory to cope with the performance requirements. In this regard, parallel programming models, such as OpenMP or CUDA, are a fundamental brick to fully exploit the performance capabilities of these architectures. However, parallel programming models are not compatible with current MDE approaches, creating a gap between the MDE used to develop CPSs and the parallel programming models supported by novel and future embedded platforms. The AMPERE project will bridge this gap by implementing a novel software architecture for the development of advanced CPSs. To do so, the proposed software architecture will be capable of capturing the definition of the components and communications described in the MDE framework, together with the non-functional properties, and transform it into key parallel constructs present in current parallel models, which may require extensions. These features will allow for making an efficient use of underlying parallel and heterogeneous architectures, while ensuring compliance with non-functional requirements, including those on real-time performance of the system.
