There is an increasing demand for efficient and robust systems able to cope with today's global needs for intensive data dissemination, e.g., media content or news feeds. Unfortunately, traditional approaches tend to focus on one end of the efficiency/robustness design spectrum, by either leveraging rigid structures such as trees to achieve efficient distribution, or using loosely-coupled epidemic protocols to obtain robustness. In this paper we present BRISA, a hybrid approach combining the robustness of epidemic-based dissemination with the efficiency of tree-based structured approaches. This is achieved by having dissemination structures such as trees implicitly emerge from an underlying epidemic substrate by a judicious selection of links. These links are chosen with local knowledge only and in such a way that the completeness of data dissemination is not compromised, i.e., the resulting structure covers all nodes. Failures are treated as an integral part of the system as the dissemination structures can be promptly compensated and repaired thanks to the underlying epidemic substrate. Besides presenting the protocol design, we conduct an extensive evaluation in a real environment, analyzing the effectiveness of the structure creation mechanism and its robustness under faults and churn. Results confirm BRISA as an efficient and robust approach to data dissemination in the large scale.

The emerging trends of designing commodity-based supercomputing systems have a severe detrimental impact on the Mean-Time-Between-Failures (MTBF). The MTBF for typical HEC installations is currently estimated to be between eight hours and fifteen days [1]. Failures in the interconnect fabric account for a fair share of the total failures occurring in such systems. This will continue to degrade as system sizes become larger. Thus, it is highly desirable that next generation system architectures and software environments provide sophisticated network level fault-tolerance and fault-resilient solutions. In the past few years, the number of cores on processors has increased dramatically. To make efficient use of these machines it is necessary to provide the required bandwidth to all the cores. To keep up with the multi-core trend, current generation supercomputers and clusters are designed with multiple network cards (rails) to provide enhanced data transfer capabilities. Besides providing enhanced performance, such multi-rail networks can also be leveraged to provide network level fault resilience. This paper presents a design for a failover mechanism in a multi-rail scenario, for handling network failures and their recovery without compromising on performance. In a general message passing scenario, whenever there is a network failure, the entire job aborts. Our design allows the job to continue even when a network failure occurs, by using the remaining rails for communication. Once the rail recovers from the failure, we also propose a protocol to re-establish connections on that rail and resume normal operations. We experimentally demonstrate that our implementation adds very little overhead and is able to deliver good performance which is comparable to that of the other rails running in isolation. Scientists across a wide range of domains increasingly rely on computer simulation for their investigations. Such simulations often spend a majority of their run-times solving large systems of linear equations that require vast amounts of computational power and memory. It is hence critical to design solvers in a highly efficient and scalable manner. Hypre is a high performance, scalable software library that offers several optimized linear solver routines and pre-conditioners. In this paper, we study the characteristics of Hypre's Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) solver algorithm. The PCG routine is known to spend a majority of its communication time in the MPI All reduce operation to compute a global summation during the inner product operation. The MPI All reduce is a blocking operation, whose latency is often a limiting factor to the overall efficiency of the PCG solver routine, and correspondingly the performance of simulations that rely on this solver. Hence, hiding the latency of the MPI All reduce operation is critical towards scaling the PCG solver routine and improving the performance of many simulations. The upcoming revision of MPI, MPI-3, will provide support for non-blocking collective communication to enable latency-hiding. The latest InfiniBand adapter from Mellanox, ConnectX-2, enables offloading of generalized lists of communication operations to the network interface. Such an interface can be leveraged to design non-blocking collective operations. In this paper, we design fully functional, scalable algorithms for the MPI_Iallreduce operation, based on the network offload technology. To the best of our knowledge, these network offload-based algorithms are the first to be presented for the MPI_Iallreduce operation. Our designs scale beyond 512 processes and we achieve near perfect communication/computation overlap. The cost of poor or repeat engineering in complex control systems is extremely high, and flexibility in software design and implementation is one of the key factors in staying competitive in the market. Complexity can be managed most effectively if the underlying software systems support structured, standardised, high-level abstraction layers that encapsulate unnecessary details behind well-defined interfaces. Moreover, since the costs of software maintenance are often as high as that of initial development, the ease with which it is possible flexibly to reconfigure, re-engineer, and replace software components in operational systems is also critical. In this paper, we present a lightweight, component-based approach to engineering embedded real-time control software, which is realized in the form of a middleware system named MIREA. The middleware supports dynamic reconfiguration of components written in C/C++, and addresses variability management in relation to non-functional properties, such as quality-of-service (QoS) and real-time scheduling. Users are allowed to componentize existing libraries easily, such as the standard NIST 4D/Real-time Control systems (RCS) library, which has been successfully used in many U.S government-driven intelligent control projects, and to reuse them as dynamically reconfigurable components. A realistic illustration is provided showing how control systems are structured and reconfigured using our approach. In fact, we discuss our approach to control using a fusion of NIST RCS as a means of architecting a real time control system and MIREA as a means of realising that architecture. Our progress to date suggests that MIREA is indeed well suited as a middleware facilitating the construction of efficient, lightweight, and scalable real-time embedded control systems.

Complex real-time embedded systems require guarantees regarding the assurance of their timing requirements. Such guarantees can be derived using advanced design and analysis methods. Many design solutions address the complexity of these systems using component-based techniques. In this paper we focus on resource sharing in component-based systems with several components executing on a multi-core processor. We consider that the tasks of each component can be scheduled on any core with the possibility of two tasks belonging to the same component executing in parallel. We propose the parallel Hierarchical Resource Policy, a novel resource sharing policy for multi-core component-based systems. We also develop a detailed response-time based schedulability analysis for the individual components and for the composed system, assuming that intra- and inter-component resource sharing takes place. © 2011 IEEE.

Resisting spam in tagging system is very challenging. This paper presents Sitab, a novel spam-resistant tagging system which can significantly diminish spam in tag search results based on users' implicit tagging behavior. Sitab is trained to obtain the weights of the client's each type of implicit tagging behavior. For each tag search, Sitab ranks each resource in the results list according to its relevance degree which is calculated by the client's implicit tagging behavior with respect to that resource. Experimental results show that Sitab can effectively resist tag spam and work better than existing tag search schemes, especially in systems with large amount of spam tags. © 2011 IEEE.

Mean Time To failure, MTTF, is a commonly accepted metric for reliability. In this paper we present a novel approach to achieve the desired MTTF with minimum redundancy. We analyze the failure behavior of large scale systems using failure logs collected by Los Alamos National Laboratory. We analyze the root cause of failures and present a choice of specific hardware and software components to be made fault-tolerant, through duplication, to achieve target MTTF at minimum expense. Not all components show similar failure behavior in the systems. Our objective, therefore, was to arrive at an ordering of components to be incrementally selected for protection to achieve a target MTTF. We propose a model for MTTF for tolerating failures in a specific component, system-wide, and order components according to the coverage provided. systems grouped based on hardware configuration showed similar improvements in MTTF when different components in them were targeted for fault-tolerance. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents an on-line distributed induction motor monitoring system based-on the ARM (Advanced RISC Machines), which is integrated with the embedded and CAN (Controller Area Network) bus technologies. The hardware structure of the system with the ARM microprocessor S3C2410X and CAN bus controller MCP2510 is introduced, the accomplishment of software of motor on-line monitoring system is also described. Compared to the complicated construction and low integration of traditional motor testing systems, this system has a reasonable structure with less external expansion units, and can carry out data transmission in real time, effectively, and with lower power cost and more reliability. © 2011 IEEE.

Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems has attracted increasing attention over the last few years, as it has become apparent that input/output performance, rather than CPU performance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance of future systems. This I/O bottleneck is caused by the increasing speed mismatch between processing units and storage devices, the use of multiple processors operating simultaneously in parallel and distributed systems, and by the increasing I/O demands of new classes of applications, like multimedia. It is also important to note that, to varying degrees, the I/O bottleneck exists at multiple levels of the memory hierarchy. All indications are that the I/O bottleneck will be with us for some time to come, and is likely to increase in importance. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is based on papers presented at the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops held in conjunction with the international parallel Processing symposium. This book is divided into three parts. Part I, the Introduction, contains four invited chapters which provide a tutorial survey of I/O issues in parallel and distributed systems. The chapters in Parts II and III contain selected research papers from the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops; many of these papers have been substantially revised and updated for inclusion in this volume. Part II collects the papers from both years which deal with various aspects of system software, and Part III addresses architectural issues. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses in computer architecture, software engineering, and multimedia systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.
