This paper presents an on-line distributed induction motor monitoring system based-on the ARM (Advanced RISC Machines), which is integrated with the embedded and CAN (Controller Area Network) bus technologies. The hardware structure of the system with the ARM microprocessor S3C2410X and CAN bus controller MCP2510 is introduced, the accomplishment of software of motor on-line monitoring system is also described. Compared to the complicated construction and low integration of traditional motor testing systems, this system has a reasonable structure with less external expansion units, and can carry out data transmission in real time, effectively, and with lower power cost and more reliability.

For a practical environmental laboratory, many environmental test chambers are needed, and any central control system designed for them would face the problems listed as follow: 1. Different protocol types. 2. Different connecting interfaces. 3. Different operating method. 4. Large distributed area. To address these problems, a laboratory central control system (LCCS) architecture is proposed in this paper, and the application software is then developed to monitor and control 15 chambers in one of the environmental laboratories in Chengdu City. This application demonstrates great value in increasing the efficiency of the environment test in that laboratory.

The goal of radiation therapy is to give as much dose as possible to the exact target location and minimizing any dose to a normal tissue. Advances of Cyber-physical control systems allow planning and provide very accurate treatments. However, the current technology does not sufficiently compensate a respiratory movement, that is especially important incase of lung (area) cancer. In this paper we present a model of radiation treatment system developed to analyze a system that compensates respiratory motion. We use Uppaal, an integrated tool environment for modeling, validation and verification of real-time systems modeled as networks of timed automata, extended with data types (bounded integers, arrays, etc.).

Resisting spam in tagging system is very challenging. This paper presents Sitab, a novel spam-resistant tagging system which can significantly diminish spam in tag search results based on users' implicit tagging behavior. Sitab is trained to obtain the weights of the client's each type of implicit tagging behavior. For each tag search, Sitab ranks each resource in the results list according to its relevance degree which is calculated by the client's implicit tagging behavior with respect to that resource. Experimental results show that Sitab can effectively resist tag spam and work better than existing tag search schemes, especially in systems with large amount of spam tags.

Complex real-time embedded systems require guarantees regarding the assurance of their timing requirements. Such guarantees can be derived using advanced design and analysis methods. Many design solutions address the complexity of these systems using component-based techniques. In this paper we focus on resource sharing in component-based systems with several components executing on a multi-core processor. We consider that the tasks of each component can be scheduled on any core with the possibility of two tasks belonging to the same component executing in parallel. We propose the parallel Hierarchical Resource Policy, a novel resource sharing policy for multi-core component-based systems. We also develop a detailed response-time based schedulability analysis for the individual components and for the composed system, assuming that intra- and inter-component resource sharing takes place.

Brazil, like other emerging countries such as China and India are increasing significantly their importance as global players. The Brazilian economic relevance gains more importance with its economic growth and industry expansion. This economic growth also reflects on embedded systems design that expands following the market demand for new products. The Brazilian developments are ubiquitous in different areas: industrial automation, automobiles, home appliances, electronic consumers etc. A statistical survey was conducted to evaluate the embedded system development in Brazil, to identify the developer's profile and the main characteristics of embedded projects. The main results indicate that Brazilian embedded developer is generally young, no older than 35 years old and has a maximum of 10 years of embedded system design experience. They also show that embedded project developed in Brazil, are commonly linked to new products, last more than 6 months and usually are delayed considering the initial schedule.

The exponential increase in the generation and collection of data has led us in a new era of data analysis and information extraction. Conventional systems based on general-purpose processors are unable to keep pace with the heavy computational requirements of data mining techniques. High performance co-processors like GPUs and FPGAs have the potential to handle large computational workloads. In this paper, we present a scalable framework aimed at providing a platform for developing and using high performance data mining applications on heterogeneous platforms. The framework incorporates a software infrastructure and a library of high performance kernels. Furthermore, it includes a variety of optimizations which increase the throughput of applications. The framework spans multiple technologies including R, GPUs, multi-core CPUs, MPI, and parallelnet CDF harnessing their capabilities for high-performance computations. This paper also introduces the concept of interleaving GPU kernels from multiple applications providing significant performance gain. Thus, in comparison to other tools available for data mining, our framework provides an easy-to-use and scalable environment both for application development and execution. The framework is available as a software package which can be easily integrated in the R programming environment.

The seemingly interminable dwindle of technology feature sizes well into the nano-scale regime has afforded computer architects with an abundance of computational resources on a single chip. The Chip Multi-Processor (CMP) paradigm is now seen as the de facto architecture for years to come. However, in order to efficiently exploit the increasing number of on-chip processing cores, it is imperative to achieve and maintain efficient utilization of the resources at run time. Uneven and skewed distribution of workloads misuses the CMP resources and may even lead to such undesired effects as traffic and temperature hotspots. While existing techniques rely mostly on software for the undertaking of load balancing duties and exploit hardware mainly for synchronization, we will demonstrate that there are wider opportunities for hardware support of load balancing in CMP systems. Based on this fact, this paper proposes IsoNet, a conflict-free dynamic load distribution engine that exploits hardware aggressively to reinforce massively parallel computation in many core settings. Moreover, the proposed architecture provides extensive fault-tolerance against both CPU faults and intra-IsoNet faults. The hardware takes charge of both (1) the management of the list of jobs to be executed, and (2) the transfer of jobs between processing elements to maintain load balance. Experimental results show that, unlike the existing popular techniques of blocking and job stealing, IsoNet is scalable with as many as 1024 processing cores.

Emerging multi-core processor designs create a computing paradigm capable of advancing numerous scientific areas, including medicine, data mining, biology, physics, and earth sciences. However, the trends in multi-core hardware technology have advanced far ahead of the advances in software technology and programmer productivity. For the most part, current scientists only leverage multi-core and GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) computing platforms after painstakingly uncovering the inherent task and data-level parallelism in their application. In many cases, the development does not realize the full potential of the parallel hardware. There exists an opportunity to meet the challenges in optimally mapping scientific application domains to multi-core computer systems through the use of compile-time and link-time optimization strategies. We are exploring a code compilation framework that automatically generates and tunes numerical solver codes for optimal performance on graphical processing units. The framework advances computational simulation in kinetic modeling by significantly reducing the execution time of scientific simulations and enabling scientists to compare results to previous models and to extend, modify, and test new models without code changes.

The improvement of information technology enables precise scientific observation that demands larger storage and faster data processing techniques than ever before. From the perspective of astronomical research, one of the most important challenges is to extract useful astronomical information efficiently from a huge collection of observed data. Even though the existing distributed computing techniques, such as grid computing and cloud computing, have provided the scientists a better way to access powerful computing resources, the development of big-data management and analysis software is still lagging far behind. The awkward predicament obstructs the connected computing resources from being utilized efficiently. Therefore, it is beneficial to provide an integrated, efficient information management and analysis system for astronomical research. This research, conducted by the Pan-STARRS research team at Taiwan, focuses on the issues of integrating commercial data warehouse and large-scale grid computing techniques, and develops a system for efficient data management and fast analysis in astronomy-related fields. Our system can be viewed as a data grid system that supports analysis of large data collections. The system consists of two analytical sub-systems and one data presentation and management sub-system. The first one is called the parallel Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering System (PARHACS), which uses a distributed message-passing algorithm to efficiently calculate a hierarchical cluster, given a set of astronomical data. The second sub-system is called the SIMilarity Classification System (SIMCS), which uses a decentralized Multiple Classifier System (MCS) framework to support a complex classification procedure using multiple classifiers. The last sub-system is called the ASTROnomical Information Management System (ASTROIMS), which utilizes a multidimensional data-warehouse design to construct a more concise, integrated, and scalable platform for fast dat
