Vienna Fortran and the path towards a standard parallel language

Highly parallel scalable multiprocessing systems (HMPs) are powerful tools for solving large-scale scientific and engineering problems. However, these machines are difficult to program since algorithms must exploit locality in order to achieve high performance. Vienna Fortran was the first fully specified data-parallel language for HMPs that provided features for the specification of data distribution and alignment at a high level of abstraction. In this paper we outline the major elements of Vienna Fortran and compare it to High Performance Fortran (HPF), a de-facto standard in this area. A significant weakness of HPF is its lack of support for many advanced applications, which require irregular data distributions and dynamic load balancing. We introduce HPF+, an extension of HPF based on Vienna Fortran, that provides the required functionality.

Most programs from scientific computing can benefit from the use of numerical libraries which provide efficient implementations for standard solution methods that often occur in numerical simulations. This is especially true for parallel scientific computing. A methodology that allows the integration of library functions without any additional programming effort would ease this programming style. In this paper we address the question how to integrate library procedures into hierarchically organized parallel programs. The hierarchical structure of a specific algorithms results from a top-down decomposition into submethods which can be realized by library functions. The integration of library functions nor only requires a correct specification of data dependencies between different modules but has also to take into account a possible distribution of data among the processors. We present algorithms for the adaptation of library modules such that their functional type and underlying data distribution fit into the hierarchical framework. The adaptation includes the construction of data flow graphs that can be used to determine data distributions for the library modules such that a minimal global execution time results.

We report on our experience of integrating Fault-Tolerant parallel and distributed Computing (FTPDC) concepts in three core and elective courses in spring 2014 at Michigan Technological University, namely Model-Driven software Development, software Quality Assurance and Operating systems. Our objective is to educate senior undergraduate software engineering students on the design, verification and implementation of fault tolerance in parallel and distributed Computing (PDC) systems. Towards this end, we design three course modules that include several lectures, demonstrations and homework assignments. We implement these course modules based on a discovery-based method of teaching where students are required (individually and in groups) to solve problems by modeling, simulating and verifying models of FTPDC systems. The students' performances and their feedback show that the designed course modules for the modeling and automated analysis of FTPDC have significantly helped them to understand the basic concepts of FTPDC and explore more advanced concepts. We will improve the design of the third course module to enhance students' skills in the implementation of fault-tolerance mechanisms.

Numerical engineering:: design of PDE black-box solvers

The design of PDE black-box solvers (for nonlinear systems of elliptic and parabolic PDEs) needs many compromises between efficiency and robustness which we call 'Numerical engineering'. The requirements for a black-box solver are formulated and the way how to meet them is presented, guided by many years of practical experience in the design of the program packages FIDISOL/CADSOL, VECFEM and LINSOL. The basic approach to the new finite difference element method (FDEM) program package, an FDM on an unstructured FEM grid, is discussed. The common feature of all these methods is the error equation that allows a transparent balancing of all errors. The discretization errors are estimated from difference formulae of different consistency orders. The error balancing must include the iterative solution of the large and sparse linear systems by the LINSOL program package. The real challenge is the parallelization on distributed memory parallel computers which is solved by corresponding data structures with optimal communication patterns and redistribution after each grid refinement cycle. software rejuvenation is a technique to prevent aging of running software. Recently, benefits of software rejuvenation in high-performance computing (HPC) areas have been remarked. In this paper, we develop a simple rejuvenation technique for time warp-based parallel and distributed simulation systems. We also present the analytical model to evaluate the reliability of the system which employs our rejuvenation scheme. Furthermore, numerical examples of a couple of parameters of the analytical model are obtained from an experimental implementation of time warp simulator.

Component-based software development (short for CBSD) is to develop software systems by choosing appropriate components in the distributed environment to assemble a dependable software architecture, which satisfies requirements. This new paradigm plays a key role in the software engineering and also brings new challenges to the dependable software architecture design. In this paper, firstly we introduce an architecture description language-pi-ADL to specify the software architecture based on component. Secondly based on Higher-Order pi-Calculus, we give a formal method to verify the behavior consistency of component substitutability. In this way, we can forecast errors and enhance the semantic correctness of the software architecture from the design stage.

We report a comparative study on the development of high-performance software for solving the problem of optimal design of multiproduct batch plants on modern parallel systems. We analyze two main algorithmic approaches to optimization - branch-and-bound and metaheuristic-based - and we develop and compare their parallel implementations on a variety of parallel architectures: multi-core CPU, GPU, and clusters. Our experiments on a real-world case study - optimization of chemical-engineering systems - demonstrate the trade-offs between the run time performance and the quality of solutions achieved by different algorithms on various parallel architectures.

This paper presents our development of ISEE, an information security engineering environment we are developing, that integrates various tools and provides comprehensive facilities to support design, development, management, and maintenance of security facilities of information/software systems continuously and consistently, and guides and helps all users to perform their tasks regularly according to ISO/IEC security standards. ISEE is the first real information security engineering environment.

Load balancing is one of the main goals of software-Defined Networking (SDN). Distributing the traffic among the possible paths of a network according to specific rules allows SDN systems to increase their global performance index in term of resource usage and scalability. In a previous paper, the authors introduced Adaptive Alienated Ant Algorithm for software-Defined Networking (A4SDN), a distributed, adaptive, load-balancing algorithm for traffic engineering on SDN showing its ability to optimize the network performance in terms of throughput, communication delay and packet loss rate. In this paper, the authors analyse how the performance of A4SDN are influenced by the underlying topology. For each considered topology, the performance of A4SDN are successfully with those of Extended Dijkstra algorithm. The tests show that the performance of A4SDN are the best when the average number of available shortest paths for each couple of nodes rises.
