Xilinx Virtex FPGAs offer the possibility of dynamic and partial run-time reconfiguration. When designing a system that includes this feature it has to be made sure, that no signal lines cross the border to other reconfigurable regions. The complex modular design flow to generate partial bitstreams and the need of macros for physical interconnection of IP-Cores causes the necessity to investigate in alternatives. This paper describes the design and implementation of a software reconfigurable multiprocessor system, based on Xilinx MicroBlaze softcore processors. A real application in the automotive domain implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-II 3000 FPGA is used to present results.

Summary form is only given. Breakthrough-quality scientific discoveries in the new millennium (such as those expected in computation biology and others), along with optimal engineering designs, have created a demand for High-End Computing (HEC) systems with sustained performance requirements at a petaflop scale and beyond. Despite the very pessimistic (if not negative) views on parallel computing systems that have prevailed in 1990s, there seems to be no other viable alternatives for such HEC systems. In this talk, we present a fresh look at the problems facing the design of petascale parallel computing systems. We review several fundamental issues that such HEC parallel computing systems must resolve. These issues include: execution models that support dynamic and adaptive multithreading, fine-grain synchronization, and global name-space and memory consistency. Related issues in parallel programming, dynamic compilation models, and system software design will also be discussed. Present solutions and future direction will be discussed based on (1) application demand (e.g. computation biology and others), (2) the recent trend as demonstrated by the HTMT, HPCS, and the Blue-Gene Cyclops (e.g. Cyclops-64) architectures, and (3) a historical perspective on influential models such as dataflow, along with concepts learned from these models.

Embedded designers now have the capability of offloading software routines into custom application-specific hardware blocks. This paper evaluates a domain-specific design system for configurable computing platforms that combine processors and configurable fabrics. Although the proposed work uses floating-point and communication primitives as the specific domain tasks evaluated, the reconfigurable computing platform and the design challenges addressed will become increasingly common in a number of embedded system environments. This paper explores the added cost of hardware resources, area, and power of moving software library routines into hardware blocks in a configurable embedded system based on the MicroBlaze soft processor.

We present a new approach for a function allocation manager supporting multiple reconfigurable devices. It is a rule-based approach considering resource usage and power consumption. An essential main component which is in the focus of this contribution is a retrieval-unit for function-requests. This unit adopts methodologies from the domain of knowledge-based systems by accounting quality-of-service related parameters from the calling application's function request.

This paper extends the previous work on the maximal allowable workload (MAW) problem [D. Juedes et al., (2004)] by investigating a resource allocation problem for distributed real-time systems that contain replicable applications. The systems may use multiple resources of a single type and be affected by multiple environmental factors. The approach searches for a feasible allocation that maximizes a user defined metric of stability. Several algorithms were developed and experiments were conducted to demonstrate the relative strength of these algorithms. The results showed that simulated annealing provides results that are the closest to the optimal for maximizing environmental parameter settings. In addition modified greedy first fit is shown to be the best performing algorithm for finding feasible allocations.

Power consumption is a troublesome design constraint for emergent systems such as IBM's BlueGene /L. If current trends continue, future petaflop systems will require 100 megawatts of power to maintain high-performance. To address this problem the power and energy characteristics of high-performance systems must be characterized. To date, power-performance profiles for distributed systems have been limited to interactive commercial workloads. However, scientific workloads are typically non-interactive (batched) processes riddled with interprocess dependences and communication. We present a framework for direct, automatic profiling of power consumption for non-interactive, parallel scientific applications on high-performance distributed systems. Though our approach is general, we use our framework to study the power-performance efficiency of the NAS parallel benchmarks on a 32-node Beowulf cluster. We provide profiles by component (CPU, memory, disk, and NIC), by node (for each of 32 nodes), and by system scale (2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 nodes). Our results indicate power profiles are often regular corresponding to application characteristics and for fixed problem size increasing the number of nodes always increases energy consumption but does not always improve performance. This finding suggests smart schedulers could be used to optimize for energy while maintaining performance.

In this study, we have successfully developed a grid-enabled software distributed shared memory called Teamster-G. This system provides users with not only a shared memory programming interface but also a transparent resource allocation service to easily develop applications and aggregate distributed resources for solving their problems on the grid environment. Moreover, since the communication cost of maintaining data-consistency is a big problem for the performance of the DSM applications, Teamster-G exploits a cluster cache scheme and a two-level consistency protocol to minimize the number of data-consistency messages transferred over wide area network. We will present the framework and the performance of Teamster-G in this paper.

The feature of partial reconfiguration provided by currently available field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) makes it possible to change hardware modules while others keep working. The combination of this feature and the high gate capacity enables the integration of dynamic systems that can be adapted to changing demands during runtime. Placing the dynamically changing modules along a horizontal communication infrastructure does not only provide communication facilities it also enables the relocation of pre-synthesized modules by bitstream manipulations. The exact placement of an incoming module is determined according to the current resource allocation, which results in an online placement problem. In order to prevent any extra configuration overhead for the relocation process, we developed the REPLICA (relocation per online configuration alteration) filter, which is capable of performing the necessary bitstream manipulations during the regular download process. The filter architecture, a configuration manager and an evaluation example are presented in this paper.

When distributing data across several nodes, two different approaches exist. The first one consists in distribution of the data object itself e.g. in striping. The second approach is aggregation of local storages, whereby each data object is assigned to a home storage node. From the viewpoint of fault-tolerant data layouts, these schemes seem to be similar. In both cases the addition of parity, e.g. RAID level 3, level 5 or Reed-Solomon codes provide tolerance against node failures. A closer look shows differences in reachable access rates, needed number of messages and recovery cost. In this paper we compare both approaches and provide a method for self-reconfiguration. The transformation from a parity grouping layout to a striping layout is shown to be feasible for stepwise and concurrent operation during data access.

Supporting distributed real-time applications in large-scale and heterogeneous distributed environments has attracted much attention recently. However, the decentralized and dynamic characteristics of the systems present a number of challenges in managing the processor and networking resources and scheduling the application execution across multiple peers. In this paper, we address these problems with a novel resource management architecture for scheduling soft real-time applications in overlay networks. Key to our approach is that nodes maintain a partial view of resource availability of their peers in local profiles, keep track of the urgency of the requests and balance application execution across multiple nodes. Our techniques are entirely decentralized and use only local knowledge considering unpredictable latencies and changing resource availability.
