Large-scale systems like BlueGene/L are susceptible to a number of software and hardware failures that can affect system performance. In this paper evaluate the effectiveness of a previously developed job scheduling algorithm for BlueGene/L in the presence of faults. We have developed two new job-scheduling algorithms considering failures while scheduling the jobs. We have also evaluated the impact of these algorithms on average bounded slowdown, overage response time and system utilization, considering different levels of proactive failure prediction and prevention techniques reported in the literature. Our simulation studies show that the use of these new algorithms with even trivial fault prediction confidence or accuracy levels (as low as 10%) can significantly improve the performance of the BlueGene/L system.

Dynamic structured adaptive mesh refinement (SAMR) techniques along with the emergence of the computational Grid offer the potential for realistic scientific and engineering simulations of complex physical phenomena. However, the inherent dynamic nature of SAMR applications coupled with the heterogeneity and dynamism of the underlying Grid environment present significant research challenges. This paper presents proactive runtime partitioning strategies based on performance prediction functions that are experimentally formulated in terms of system parameters such as CPU load and available memory. These proactive partitioning strategies form a part of the GridARM autonomic framework which enables self-managing, self-adapting, and self-optimizing SAMR applications on the Grid. Experimental evaluation of the proactive schemes using the 3-D Richtmyer-Meshkov compressible fluid dynamics kernel for different system configurations and workloads demonstrates the improvement in overall runtime performance.

The current trend of using multiprocessor computers for server applications requires operating system adoptions for high performance. However, modifying large bodies of software is very costly and time-consuming, and the cost of porting an operating system to a multiprocessor might not be motivated by the potential performance benefits. In this paper we present a novel method, the application kernel approach, for adaption of an existing uniprocessor kernel to SMP hardware. Our approach considers the existing kernel as a "black box", to which no or small changes are made. Instead, the original kernel runs OS-services unmodified on one processor whereas the other processors execute applications on top of a small custom kernel. A prototype implementation illustrates that the approach can be realized with fairly small resources. We also present an initial performance evaluation where we show that the performance is good for user-bound applications.

This workshop provides a forum for an overview, project presentations, and discussion of the research fostered and funded by the NSF next generation software (NGS) program. The program announced in October of 1998, has had several calls for proposals (in FY99, FY01, FY02, FY03, and FY04), and supports research in two broad technical thrusts: one is in developing technology for performance engineered systems (TPES) for the design, management and runtime support of computing systems and applications. The other thrust (complex application development support systems - CADSS) seeks to create new systems' software technology, including enhanced compiler capabilities, and tools for the development, runtime support and dynamic composition of complex applications executing on complex computing platforms, such as computational grids, assemblies of embedded systems and sensor systems, as well as high-end platforms (grids-in-a-box) and special purpose processing systems.

Summary form only given. distributed systems verification is one of the main issues in software engineering. It is considered as the major field of the formal specification techniques. However, many difficulties remain. In fact, the principal problem is in producing a coherent specification and providing a fully integrated semantics. Since formal methods are mathematical description models that try to give a response concerning the reliability of a system. It remains a hard way for the designers. Thus, we present, here, an open environment for the integration of formal methods in the description and verification of distributed and concurrent systems. The system currently uses UML notation and provides rewriting logic, model checking, theorem proving, and simulation techniques.

Summary form only given. Coarse-grain reconfigurable systems offer high performance and energy-efficiency, provided an efficient run-time reconfiguration mechanism is available. Using an embedded software vantage point, we define three levels of reconfigurability for such systems, each with a different degree of coupling between embedded software and reconfigurable hardware. We classify reconfigurable systems starting with tightly-coupled coprocessors and evolving to processor networks. This results in a gradual increase of energy-efficiency when compared to software-only systems, at the cost of increasing programming complexity. Using several sample applications including signal-, crypto-, and network-processing acceleration units, we demonstrate energy-efficiency improvements of 12 times over software for tightly-coupled systems up to 84 times for network-on-chip systems.

Summary form only given. Many tasks in safety-critical embedded systems have hard real-time characteristics. Failure to meet deadlines may result in the loss of life or in large damages. Utmost carefulness and state-of-the-art machinery have to be applied to make sure that all requirements are met. To do so lies in the responsibility of the designer(s). Fortunately, the state of the art in deriving run-time guarantees for real-time systems has progressed so much that tools based on sound methods are commercially available and have proved their usability in industrial practice.

Summary form only given. Performance prediction is necessary and crucial in order to deal with multidimensional performance effects on parallel systems. The increasing use of parallel supercomputers and cluster systems to solve large-scale scientific problems has generated a need for tools that can predict scalability trends of applications written for these machines. In this paper, we describe a compiler tool to automate performance prediction for execution times of parallel programs by runtime formulas in closed form. For an arbitrary parallel MPI source program the tool generates a corresponding runtime function modeling the CPU execution time and the message passing overhead. The environment is proposed to support the development process and the performance engineering activities that accompany the whole software life cycle. The performance prediction tool is shown to be effective in analyzing a representative application for varying problem sizes on several platforms using different numbers of processors.

Summary form only given. We investigate ways of expanding the scope of applicability of time-utility and aggregate utility driven scheduling. Being interested in critical applications and systems, we explore issues raised with proving that a system is endowed with combined safety, liveness, timeliness and dependability properties, and the province of proof-based system engineering. We examine the nature of proof obligations, as well as how to fulfill them, whenever timeliness and aggregate utility properties are sought. Relationships with classical real-time computing problems and timeliness proofs are analyzed. Then we take time-utility scheduling a few steps further, by showing how to maximize aggregate utility while achieving process serializability, process termination, as well as dependability properties, in various computational models, considering distributed systems prone to failures where processes share multicopied updatable persistent data.
