This paper presents a technique for simulating VHDL models on a workstation cluster of general purpose machines via the PVM (parallel virtual machines) environment. The Simulation and verification are very important steps within the development cycle of an integrated circuit. In particular, the simulation of complex architectures in a hardware description language like VHDL is a major time factor within the design process. To accelerate such a simulation, the distribution of the VHDL model data base and of the simulating data base within a workstation cluster of general purpose machines has been developed. The availability of cheap supercomputing processors and parallel processing software such as PVM have enabled the reutilization of existing software in distributed parallel processing environments. Computations once taking many days with traditional mainframes are now being performed in only a few hours. Compared with other acceleration methods, this distributed simulation method needs no expensive hardware extensions. It uses the temporary idle workstations within a cluster to speed up the simulation. The PVM software provides a unified framework within which parallel programs can be developed in an efficient and straightforward manner using existing hardware. The PVM computing model is simple yet very general and accommodates a wide variety of application program structures. PVM tasks may possess arbitrary control and dependency structures. In other words, at any point in the execution of a concurrent application, any task in existence may start or stop other tasks or add or delete computers from the virtual machine. Any specific control and dependency structure may be implemented under the PVM system by appropriate use of PVM constructs and host language control-flow statement. The MiPPS library supports a hybrid model of parallel programming. The library is targeted at commodity multiprocessors, with support for clusters. The implementation of the concurrency routines reveals discrepancies between popular operating systems. Tests on suitable applications also reveal similar discrepancies in performance across different multiprocessors. The MiPPS library has also been the basis of a parallelization of the Active Chart Parsing algorithm for speech understanding.

FORGE brings together a number of advances in architectural modeling, software architecture and distributed/real-time systems to build a platform that provides two fundamental capabilities for distributed, real time, and embedded (DRE) system development: (a) conceptualization and coding of the design knowledge through collaborative specifications that are inherently matched to distributed solutions; and (b) exploitation of the design knowledge across all development phases for the DRE systems. Our proof-of-concept FORGE prototype is built upon collaborative specifications captured by extensions to the message sequence charts (MSCs) that drive the customization of CompOSEIQ middleware services and generate node-architecture specific code through descriptions of the architecture and resources captured using ADL and RDL respectively.

Next generation distributed real-time embedded systems will have to satisfy an increasingly complex set of requirements. Among the most interesting will be the need for application programs to adapt to changing conditions, maximizing the amount of work they accomplish in the face of unpredictable demands. The work described in this paper implemented several new system services in support of such adaptive behavior in a dynamic target tracking testbed environment. The lessons learned were applicable to many emerging DRE applications, and can serve as guide for future development.

Clusters and distributed systems offer fault tolerance and high performance through load sharing, and are thus attractive in real-time applications. When all computers are up and running, we would like the load to be evenly distributed among the computers. When one or more computers-fail the must be redistributed. The redistribution is determined by the recovery scheme. The recovery scheme should keep the load as evenly distributed as possible even when the most unfavorable combinations of computers break down, i.e. we want to optimize the worst-case behavior. In this paper we define recovery schemes, which are optimal for a number of important cases. We also show that the problem of finding optimal recovery schemes corresponds to the mathematical problem of finding sequences of integers with minimal sum and for which all sums of subsequences are unique.

Clusters and distributed systems offer fault tolerance and high performance through load sharing. When all computers are up and running, we would like the load to be evenly distributed among the computers. When one or more computers break down the load on these computers must be redistributed to other computers in the cluster. The redistribution is determined by the recovery scheme. The recovery scheme should keep the load as evenly distributed as possible even when the most unfavorable combinations of computers break down, i.e. we want to optimize the worst-case behavior. In this paper we define recovery schemes, which are optimal for a number of important cases. We also show that the problem of finding optimal recovery schemes corresponds to the mathematical problem called Golomb rulers. These provide optimal recovery schemes for up to 373 computers in the cluster.

Adaptive resource management (ARM) technology has emerged as a way to: (1) support applications' varying resource needs, and (2) provide reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems. Most existent works on ARM have focused on centralized approaches. However, centralized ARMs are not scalable, which may result in slow responses and wrong allocation decisions based on inaccurate system state information. In this paper, we show how to address these problems with a decentralized resource management approach. Based on social models, the approach appears to have the potential to provide prompt and accurate allocation of resources.

Quality of service (QoS) requirements, which include availability, integrity, performance and responsiveness are increasingly needed by science and engineering applications. Rising computational demands and data mining present a new challenge in the IT world. As our needs for more processing, research and analysis increase, performance and reliability degrade exponentially. In this paper we present a software system that manages quality of service for Unix based distributed application clusters. Our approach is synthetic and involves intelligent agents that make use of static and dynamic ontologies to monitor, diagnose and correct faults at run time, over a private network. Finally, we provide experimental results from our pilot implementation in a production environment.
