The application of hardware-parameterized models to distributed systems can result in omission of key bottlenecks such as the full cost of inter-node communication in a shared memory cluster. However, inclusion in the model of message characteristics and complex memory hierarchies may result in impractical models. Nonetheless, the growing gap between memory and CPU performance combined with the trend toward large scale clustered shared memory platforms implies an increased need to consider the impact of local memory communication on parallel processing in distributed systems. We present a simple and useful model of point-to-point memory communication to predict and analyze the latency of memory copy, pack and unpack. We use the model to isolate contributions of hardware, middleware, and software to data transfers on Intel- and MIPS-based platforms.

The paper presents a model that is useful for developing resource allocation algorithms for distributed real-time systems that operate in dynamic environments. Interesting aspects of the model include dynamic environments, utility and service levels, which provide a means for graceful degradation in resource-constrained situations and support optimization of the allocation of resources. The paper also provides an allocation algorithm that illustrates how to use the model for producing feasible, optimal resource allocations.

parallel and distributed simulation tools are emerging that offer the ability to perform detailed, packet-level simulations of large-scale computer networks on an unprecedented scale. The state-of-the-art in large-scale network simulation is characterized quantitatively. For this purpose, a metric based on the number of packet transmissions that can be processed by a simulator per second of wallclock time (PTS) is used as a means to quantitatively assess packet-level network simulator performance. An approach to realizing scalable network simulations that leverages existing sequential simulation models and software is described. Results from a recent performance study are presented concerning large-scale network simulation on a variety of platforms ranging from workstations to cluster computers to supercomputers. These experiments include runs utilizing as many as 1536 processors yielding performance as high as 106 million PTS. The performance of packet-level simulations of web and ftp traffic, and denial of service attacks on networks containing millions of network nodes are briefly described, including a run demonstrating the ability to simulate a million web traffic flows in near real-time. New opportunities and research challenges to fully exploit this capability are discussed. © 2003 IEEE.

Interacting processes an distributed systems save their checkpoints on local disks for efficiency reasons. But, because local checkpoints get unavailable with failing hosts, redundancy schemes similar to RAID-like storage schemes have to be used. In such systems, checkpoints are stable under a particular fault model because they can get reconstructed in the distributed system. In this paper, two variants of stable checkpoint storage are compared, (a) parity grouping over local checkpoints and (ii) RAID-like distribution of each checkpoint using a software based distributed storage system. An analysis is given to compare costs for collective checkpoint creation, recovery of a single process and rollback of all processes. The results show that despite the differences in detail, checkpointing using a distributed storage system is a reasonable solution.

The Real-time Java Experts Group has defined the real-time specification for Java (RTSJ), which provides the following capabilities: (1) new memory management models that can be used in lieu of garbage collection, (2) access to raw physical memory. (3) a higher resolution time granularity suitable for real-time systems, and (4) stronger guarantees on thread semantics when compared to regular Java, i.e., the most eligible runnable thread is always run.

Computational Grids are emerging as a new infrastructure for Internet-based parallel and distributed computing. They enable the sharing, exchange, discovery, and aggregation of resources distributed across multiple administrative domains, organizations and enterprises. To accomplish this, Grids need infrastructure that supports various services: security, uniform access, resource management, scheduling, application composition, computational economy, and accounting. Although several initiatives are engaged in the development of Grid technologies, Grid accounting issues are yet to be addressed. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new infrastructure called GridBank that provides services for accounting. The support of computational economy and accounting services can lead to a self-regulated accountability in Grid computing. This paper presents requirements of Grid accounting and different economic models within which it can operate and proposes a Grid Accounting Services Architecture to meet them. The paper highlights implementation issues with a detailed discussion on the format for various records/databases that the GridBank needs to maintain. It also presents protocols for interaction between the GridBank and various components within Grid computing environments.

The current technologies have made it possible to execute parallel applications across heterogeneous platforms. However, the performance models available do not provide adequate methods to calculate, compare and predict the applications performance on these platforms. In this paper, we discuss an enhanced performance evaluation model for parallel applications on heterogeneous systems. In our analysis, we include machines of different architectures, specifications and operating environments. We also discuss the enabling technologies that facilitate such heterogeneous applications. The model is then validated through experimental measurements using an agent-based parallel Java system, which facilitates simultaneous utilization of heterogeneous systems for parallel applications. The model provides good evaluation metrics that allow developers to assess and compare the parallel heterogeneous applications performances.

OpenMP has attracted widespread interest because it is an easy-to-use parallel programming model for shared memory multiprocessor systems. Implementation of a "cluster-enabled" OpenMP compiler is presented. Compiled programs are linked to the page-based software distributed-shared-memory system, SCASH, which runs on PC clusters. This allows OpenMP programs to be run transparently in a distributed memory environment. The compiler converts programs written for OpenMP into parallel programs using the SCASH static library, moving all shared global variables into SCASH shared address space at runtime. As data mapping has a great impact on the performance of OpenMP programs compiled for software distributed-shared-memory, extensions to OpenMP directives are defined for specifying data mapping and loop scheduling behavior, allowing data to be allocated to the node where it is to be processed. Experimental results of benchmark programs on PC clusters using both Myrinet and fast Ethernet are reported.

Broadband wireless technologies have the potential to provide integrated data and multimedia services in several niche areas. The rapid emergence of many new protocols in this area has created a growing need to develop high performance communication systems that can satisfy high-end data processing requirements inherent in these technologies within ever decreasing time to market windows. A methodology used to develop a configurable platform for embedded communication system designs is discussed. One of the applications for the architecture requires that the device interacts with a variety of components that may communicate using variety of different protocols. Varying geographic deployment of the device may also require dynamic adjustment of the operating behavior of the system hardware. Thus the architecture is built with the ability to be rapidly reconfigured in order to optimize its functionality and performance.

Real-time distributed systems are becoming pervasive, supporting a broad range of applications such as avionics, automotive, adaptive control, robotics, computer vision and multimedia. In such systems, several activities are executed on different nodes and cooperate via message passing. One increasingly important concept is that of quality-of-service (QoS), i.e. a system performance metric from the application point-of-view. Concerning the communication system, the QoS delivered to the application is a function of communication parameters such as the rates of message streams. In previous work, the authors have developed two network protocols, FTT-CAN and FTT-Ethernet, which allow online changes to the set of message streams under guaranteed timeliness. The specific network protocols are abstracted away leading to a generic communication paradigm named Flexible Time-Triggered (FTT), which supports online QoS management, with arbitrary policies, in distributed real-time systems. Two possible QoS management policies are referred, priority-based and another one based on the elastic task model, and their use is illustrated with a case study.
