In this paper, we compare the PD/sup 2/ Pfair algorithm to the EDF-FF partitioning scheme, which uses "first fit" (FF) as a partitioning heuristic and the earliest-deadline-first (EDF) algorithm for per-processor scheduling. We present experimental results that show that PD/sup 2/ is competitive with, and in some cases outperforms, EDF-FF. These results suggest that Pfair scheduling is a viable alternative to partitioning. Furthermore, as discussed herein, Pfair scheduling provides many additional benefits, such as simple and efficient synchronization, temporal isolation, fault tolerance, and support for dynamic tasks.

As software distributed Shared Memory(DSM) systems become attractive on larger clusters, the focus of attention moves toward improving the reliability of systems. In this paper, we propose a lightweight logging scheme, called remote logging, and a recovery protocol for home-based DSM. Remote logging stores coherence-related data to the volatile memory of a remote node. The logging overhead can be moderated with high-speed system area network and user-level DMA operations supported by modern communication protocols. Remote logging tolerates multiple failures if the backup nodes of failed nodes are alive. It makes the reliability of DSM grow much higher. Experimental results show that our fault-tolerant DSM has low overhead compared to conventional stable logging and it can be effectively recovered from some concurrent failures.

Most of the thread-level parallelism (TLP) being successfully exploited so far has been primarily from scientific application programs, in particular, floating-point programs. General-purpose applications, especially those written in C or C++, such as the benchmarks in SPECint2000, have primarily been exploiting only instruction-level parallelism (ILP). A lot of research has been done recently on multiprocessors-on-a-chip (often called "multithreaded processors") because VLSI technology today allows multiple processor cores to be implemented on a single chip. An interesting question has arisen as to how much TLP and ILP could be exploited in general-purpose application programs so such multithreaded processors could become the main work horses of future computer systems. In this paper, we discuss the program characteristics which make it so difficult to exploit TLP in these general-purpose application programs, and present several machine models and simulation techniques for studying how much TLP and ILP could be exploited with these models. We also present some measurements on program characteristics important to the design of such multithreaded processors and their compilers.

This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of our high-performance decoupled architecture, the HiDISC (Hierarchical Decoupled Instruction Stream Computer). HiDISC provides low memory access latency by introducing enhanced data prefetching techniques at both the hardware and the software levels. Three processors, one for each level of the memory hierarchy, act in concert to mask the memory latency. Our performance evaluation benchmarks include the Data-Intensive systems Benchmark suite and the DIS Stressmark suite. Our simulation results point to a distinct advantage of the HiDISC system over current prevailing superscalar architectures for both sets of the benchmarks. On the average, a 12% improvement in performance is achieved while 17% of cache misses are eliminated.

Future high-end computers which promise very high performance require sophisticated program execution models and languages in order to deal with very high latencies across the memory hierarchy and to exploit massive parallelism. This paper presents our progress in an ongoing research toward this goal. Specifically we develop a suitable program execution model, a high-level programming notation which shields the application developer from the complexities of the architecture, and a compiler and runtime system based on the underlying models. In particular, we propose fine-grain multithreading and thread percolation as key components of our program execution model. We investigate implementing these models and systems on novel architectures such as the HTMT architecture and IBM's Blue Gene. Also, we report early performance prediction of thread percolation and its impact on execution time.

This paper proposes a general framework for searching large distributed repositories. Examples of such repositories include sites with music/video content, distributed digital libraries, distributed caching systems, etc. The framework is based on the concept of neighborhood; each client keeps a list of the most beneficial sites according to past experience, which are visited first when the client searches for some particular content. Exploration methods continuously update the neighborhoods in order to follow changes in access patterns. Depending on the application, several variations of search and exploration processes are proposed. Experimental evaluation demonstrates the benefits of the framework in different scenarios.

The paper proposes a simple, economical and efficient real-time, visual hand gesture recognition system for human-computer interaction. The system is designed to work in critical lighting conditions, for example when an image is projected onto a wall (conferences, offices, etc). Given the low level of computational complexity, the system can be used instead of a mouse. The extreme naturalness of the interaction makes previous training unnecessary and the robustness of the algorithms used guarantees a high level of reliability. The architecture of the system is described, and experimental results obtained in a large number of tests with different, untrained users are presented and commented.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) attempts to attain higher processor utilization by allowing instructions from multiple independent threads to coexist in a processor and compete for shared resources. Previous studies have shown, however, that its throughput may be limited by the number of threads. A reason is that a fixed thread scheduling policy cannot be optimal for the varying mixes of threads it may face in an SMT processor. Our adaptive dynamic thread scheduling (ADTS) was previously proposed to achieve higher utilization by allowing a detector thread to make use of wasted pipeline slots with nominal hardware and software costs. The detector thread adaptively switches between various fetch policies. Our previous study showed that a single fixed thread scheduling policy presents much room (some 30%) for improvement compared to an oracle-scheduled case. In this paper, we take a closer look at ADTS. We implemented the functional model of the ADTS and its software architecture to evaluate various heuristics for determining a better fetch policy for a next scheduling quantum. We report that performance could be improved by as much as 25%.

The grid enables large-scale resource sharing and makes it viable for running large-scale parallel and distributed simulations. The high level architecture (HLA) paradigm provides a software platform and interoperability interface for simulation components to utilize these hardware resources. However, neither the grid nor the HLA provides mechanism for resource management for parallel and distributed simulations. It is also noticed that substantial effort is required for writing program that conforms to the runtime infrastructure (RTI) requirements because of its complexity. In this paper, we introduce a framework for designing and executing parallel simulation using the RTI. The framework is also designed to assist load balancing and checkpointing. With the code library from our framework, the modeler is able to complete the design of a parallel simulation that runs on RTI by specifying the simulation configuration and the handling detail of each event. Our framework incorporates automatic code generation. It also uses data distribution management (DDM) to route simulation events (interactions) to achieve efficient use of network bandwidth.

We describe and evaluate a Hierarchical Sparse Matrix (HiSM) storage format designed to be a unified format for sparse matrix applications on vector processors. The advantages that the format offers are low storage requirements, a flexible structure for element manipulations and allowing for efficient operations. To take full advantage of the format we also propose a vector architecture extension that supports the HiSM format. We show that utilizing the HiSM format we can achieve 40% reduction of storage space when comparing to the compressed row storage (CRS) and jagged diagonal (JD) storage methods. Utilizing the HiSM storage on a vector processor we can significantly increase the vector performance for sparse matrix vector multiplication (SMVM) by 5.3 times compared to CRS and 4.07 times compared to JD. Finally, to illustrate the flexibility of the format we compared the cost of an element insertion against the JD and CRS formats. We show that for an element insertion operation HiSM outperforms JD for average and large matrices although it has a slight disadvantage for small matrices and always outperforms CRS between 2 and 400 times.
