The emerging distributed applications require end-to-end support for various quality-of-service (QoS) aspects, including bandwidth, latency, jitter, and dependability. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an open distributed object computing infrastructure, standardized by the Object Management Group (OMG). Its goal is to minimize the effort required to develop high-quality systems by composing applications using reusable software components. However, CORBA is not sufficient to provide QoS guarantees in a distributed environment as it lacks capabilities to specify and enforce QoS constraints. For enforcing these constraints, OMG came up with Real-Time CORBA (RTCORBA) specification that can guarantee end-to-end predictability in a complex realtime system. Currently, RTCORBA specification addresses the location transparency, but does not address the resource monitoring and management issues critical for meeting the QoS constraints in a multi-server distributed processing environment. In this paper, we identify the functionalities that are required to ensure predictability in such an environment and propose a resource management framework for RTCORBA. We present its design, a prototype implementation using ORBit ORB, and an example to illustrate its use.

Adaptive Quality-of-Service management is critical for enabling effective collaboration between distributed clients in a heterogeneous (wired and wireless) environment. This is because both client profiles (capabilities, interests and resources) and system resources can be significantly different and highly dynamic. This paper presents the design and prototype implementation of an adaptive QoS management framework for collaborative multimedia applications in distributed, heterogeneous environments. The overall goal of the framework is to locally adapt the shared information to meet the capabilities, interests and current state of each collaborating client while preserving the semantic content of the information to maintain effective sharing. Transformations investigated in this paper include gradual gradations and modality transformations. The framework builds on a publisher-subscriber messaging substrate that uses semantic profiles and provides each client with direct and immediate access to all information defined by its needs and capabilities, without having to maintain and update global rosters. It interfaces with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to determine the state of the network by directly querying network elements. An experimental evaluation of the framework for wired and wireless clients is also presented.

In the past, developers of parallel science and engineering applications have been reluctant to embrace objectoriented languages due to the high abstraction penalties they incur at runtime. However, recent advances in design techniques and compiler technology have allowed C++ to emerge as a practical choice for these applications. Due to the lag in acceptance of these languages for parallel computing, there has also been a lag in commercial tool support for this application domain. This paper presents extensions made to the Vampir/GuideView (VGV) tool set to support performance analysis of object-oriented mixed MPI/OpenMP parallel applications. First, a performance data abstraction for object-oriented mixed MPI/OpenMP parallel applications is proposed. Next, the implementation of this abstraction within the VGV tool set is presented. Finally, our tool set is demonstrated by applying it to two parallel applications. VGV is the first commercial tool to provide performance analysis facilities for these types of applications.

Schedulability Analysis (SA) approaches that are based on a priori information and use fixed execution times with constant workloads work well in many application domains and allow pre-deployment guarantees of real-time performance such as Rate Monotonic Analysis (RMA). However, certain realtime applications must operate in highly dynamic environments, thereby precluding accurate characterization of workloads by static models. This leads to the notion that a new SA trigger for dynamic environments, in which applications experience large variations in the workload, needs to guarantee real-time performance during run-time. This paper examines the case of periodic, dynamic real-time systems, and describes an efficient SA policing technique which can trigger SA appropriately, and uses a dynamic threshold which becomes sensitive when the quality of service (QoS) of the dynamic real-time application approaches its deadline.

This paper presents our design and tests of a realtime network monitoring program for DeSiDeRaTa, an existing resource management system. This monitor will assist DeSiDeRaTa in maintaining an acceptable Quality of Service (QoS) for groups of real-time applications by reporting the communication delays caused by inadequate network bandwidth. The network monitoring application we developed uses SNMP and network topology information gleaned from the DeSiDeRaTa application specification files. Network bandwidth utilization of each real-time communication path is computed, and experiments have been run to demonstrate the accuracy of these measurements.

In this paper we present the design and implementation of a Pluggable Fault Tolerant CORBA Infrastructure that provides fault tolerance for CORBA applications by utilizing the pluggable protocols framework that is available for most CORBA ORBS. Our approach does not require modification to the CORBA ORB, and requires only minimal modifications to the application. Moreover; it avoids the difficulty of retrieving and assigning the ORB state, by incorporating the fault tolerance mechanisms into the ORB. The Pluggable Fault Tolerant CORBA Infrastructure achieves performance that is similar to, or better than, that of other Fault Tolerant CORBA systems, while providing strong replica consistency.

Despite continued innovations in design of I/O systems, I/O performance has not kept pace with the progress in processor and communication technology. This paper addresses this I/O problem from a compiler's perspective, and presents an I/O optimization strategy based on access pattern and storage form (file layout) detection. The objective of our optimization strategy is to determine storage forms for array-based data sets taking into account future use of data (future access patterns). To tackle this problem, we present a three-step strategy: (i) determining all I/O access patterns to the array, and among them, selecting the most dominant (i.e., the most beneficial) access pattern; (ii) determining the most suitable storage form for the array taking into account the most dominant access pattern detected in the previous step; and (iii) optimizing the non-dominant access patterns using collective I/O, an optimization that allows each processor to do I/O on behalf of others if doing so improves overall performance.

Breakthrough in Earth Science Observing will occur when constellations of Earth observing satellites are able to fully collaborate together and collectively monitor the conditions of our planet through a vast array of instruments. These satellites form a network that consists of distributed processes that need to respond to perceived scientific events, the spacecraft environment, spacecraft anomalies and user commands. The requests and responses exhibit dynamic behavior. In order to handle such dynamic environments, a method is needed to guarantee the real-time quality of service constraints. The DeSiDeRaTa resource management approach is being enhanced to characterize the dynamic aspects of intraconstellation topologies and to accommodate the concept of service levels and utility. This paper presents a design model of cooperative problem solving to show how the solution approach addresses the key challenges presented in the problem and specifies how the agent, resource manager and satellite constellations would operate correctly and interact in complex, dynamic and unpredictable environments. It extends the system model of DeSiDeRaTa to accommodate the concepts of utility, service levels and planning. The system model for the IPA is presented to show the proof of concept.

Despite their clear advantage in scalability, two-dimensional data distributions are not efficiently supported by current software distributed shared memory (SDSM) systems. This is because sharing between nodes occurs on both columns and rows. Sharing in two dimensions is not a good match for SDSM systems, because either a row- or column-major data layout of pages leads to (1) severe thrashing if a strong memory consistency is used, or (2) exchange of unnecessary data between nodes, if a relaxed memory consistency is used. We examine two alternatives for efficiently supporting two-dimensional data distributions in SDSM systems. We develop two new page consistency protocols for this purpose. One protocol, called Explicit-2D, requires that the user or compiler explicitly identify truly shared elements within a page; the other, called Implicit-2D, infers such elements implicitly. Knowledge of truly shared elements allows the SDSM, at synchronization points, to send only truly shared data, which reduces diff sizes. As the problem size or the number of nodes grows, programs written using a two-dimensional distributions with our new protocols are superior to those using a one-dimensional one. The difference in our tests is as much as 12% for Red-Black SOR, and increases with the problem size and number of nodes.

Real-time applications continue to increase in importance as they are employed in various critical areas, such as command and control systems. These applications have traditionally required custom-made systems to execute them. Recently, with the widespread use of increasingly powerful commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, some real-time system designers have started a shift from custom development to COTS-based systems to achieve lower costs and more flexible systems. This research investigates the problem of allocating real-time applications to a set of COTS heterogeneous machines connected together by a COTS high-speed network. The heuristics were implemented on the High Performance distributed Computing Program's (HiPer-D) Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) testbed. At the specification of NSWC, the goal of this study is to design static resource allocation heuristics that balance the utilization of the computation and network resources in the HiPer-D system based on the system information provided. The broader goal is to maximize the time before dynamic reallocation is required for managing an increased workload at runtime.
