Concentrates on the problem of defining and measuring parameters that characterize typical behavior of parallel applications targeted to distributed shared memory (DSM) systems and shared-memory multiprocessors (SMPs). These parameters can be used as input to various models for performance evaluation in this research area. Furthermore, typical application behaviors can be recognized, which can help to generate new ideas for improvements to memory consistency protocols, adapting them to specific application characteristics. Our study encompasses a variety of parameters, such as frequencies of operations of various access types (private read/writes, shared read/writes, lock operations, barrier operations), the average number of accessed blocks per interval, the average number of modified words, etc. The results presented in this paper are based on the SPLASH-2 (Stanford parallel Applications for SHared Memory) application suite. The developed instrumentation tool Scowl, along with the applied simulation environment Limes, are publicly available and applicable for performing measurements on other parallel applications as well.

Efficient execution of applications requires insight into how the system features impact the performance of the application. For distributed systems, the task of gaining this insight is complicated by the complexity of the system features. This insight generally results from significant experimental analysis and possibly the development of performance models. This paper presents the Prophesy project, an infrastructure that aids in gaining this needed insight based upon experience. The core component of Prophesy is a relational database that allows for the recording of performance data, system features and application details.

TACO is a template library that implements higher-order parallel operations on distributed object sets by means of reusable topology classes and C++ function templates. We discuss an experimental application that exploits TACO's distributed object groups and collective operations for computing the similarity between groups of molecular sequences, a computationally intensive core problem in molecular biology research. In particular we show how TACO's distributed collections can be conveniently combined with well known concepts found in the C++ standard template library (STL) to solve matching and sorting problems effectively on distributed hardware platforms. The resulting implementation is concise and gives excellent parallel performance on PC- and workstation clusters.

The bulk synchronous task scheduling problem (BSSP) is known as an effective task scheduling problem for distributed-memory machines, but the time complexity of BSSP is unknown. This paper presents a proof of NP-completeness of BSSP even in the case of unit time tasks and positive integer constant communication delays. This paper also gives an approximation algorithm for BSSP in several restricted cases.

Today many applications routinely generate large quantities of data. The data often takes the form of (time) series, or more generally streams, i.e. an ordered sequence of records. Analysis of this data requires stream processing techniques which differ in significant ways from what current database analysis and query techniques have been optimized for. In this paper we present a new operator, called StreamJoin, that can efficiently be used to solve stream-related problems of various applications, such as universal quantification, pattern recognition and data mining. Contrary to other approaches. StreamJoin processing provides rapid response times, a non-blocking execution as well as economical resource utilization. Adaptability to different application scenarios is realized by means of parameters. In addition, the StreamJoin operator can be efficiently embedded into the database engine, thus implicitly using the optimization and parallelization capabilities for the benefit of the application. The paper focuses on the applicability of StreamJoin to integrate application semantics into the DBMS.

Efficient query processing is a critical requirement for data warehousing systems as decision support applications often require minimum response times to answer complex, ad-hoc queries having aggregations, multi-ways joins over vast repositories of data. This can be achieved by fragmenting warehouse data. The data fragmentation concept in the context of distributed databases aims to reduce query execution time and facilitates the parallel execution of queries. In this paper, we propose a methodology for applying the fragmentation technique in a data warehouse star schema to reduce the total query execution cost. We present an algorithm for fragmenting the tables of a star schema. During the fragmentation process, we observe that the choice of the dimension tables used in fragmenting the fact table plays an important role on overall performance. Therefore, we develop a greedy algorithm in selecting "best" dimension tables. We propose an analytical cost model for executing a set of OLAP queries on a fragmented star schema. Finally, we conduct some experiments to evaluate the utility of the fragmentation for efficiently executing OLAP queries.

We study the issue of performance prediction on the SGI-Power Challenge, a typical SMP. On such a platform, the cost of memory accesses depends on their locality and on contention among processors. By running a carefully designed suite of microbenchmarks, we provide quantitative evidence that memory hierarchy effects impact performance far more substantially than other phenomena related to contention. We also fit three cost functions based on variants of the BSP model, which do not account for the hierarchy, and a newly defined function F expressed in terms of hardware counters, which captures both memory hierarchy and contention effects. We test the accuracy of all the functions on both synthetic and application benchmarks showing that, unlike the other functions, F achieves an excellent level of accuracy in all cases. Although hardware counters are only available at run-time, we give evidence that function F can still be employed as a prediction tool by extrapolating values of the counters from pilot runs on small input sizes.

The paper introduces the concept of collective breakpoints and classifies the possible parallel breakpoints comparing their mechanisms. Based on the collective breakpoints the macrostep-by-macrostep execution mode has been defined. After introducing the concept of the execution tree and meta-breakpoints the systematic debugging of message passing parallel programs is explained. The main features and distributed structure of DIWIDE, a macrostep debugger is described. The integration of DIWIDE into the GRADE and WINPAR parallel programming environments is outlined. An algorithm is shown how to generate automatically the collective breakpoints in the GRADE environment.

An architecture has been structured to map the distributed business logic for product engineering lifecycle. In this architecture, a commercial Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system and an innovative Computer-Aided Process engineering (CAPE) system, which was developed by the author and commercialised by an Australian company, are distributedly integrated using VisiBroker's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) as the middleware. The architecture, presented in this paper, provides a framework for the construction of a new and innovative distributed system to support distributed concurrent product engineering lifecycle.

Understanding program dependencies in a computer program is essential for many software engineering activities including program slicing, testing, debugging, reverse engineering, and maintenance. In this paper, we present a dependence-based representation called multithreaded dependence graph, which extends previous dependence-based representations, to represent program dependencies in a concurrent Java program. We also discuss some important applications of a multithreaded dependence graph in a maintenance environment for concurrent Java programs.
