Digital images require a large amount of data to be represented. To make image storage and transmission practical and economical, image compression has become a major issue. In the past few years, several image compression methods using fractal theory have been developed. These methods promise better performances for compression. One of the most efficient approaches is based on iterated function systems (IFS), and has been promoted by Barnsley (1988). The basic idea is that an image can be reconstructed using the self-similarity it contains. A way to speed up the encoding process is to implement parallel processing using PVM (parallel virtual machine) software. The system utilizes both static and dynamic load allocations to obtain substantial compression time speedup over the original, sequential encoding implementation. In this paper, considerations such as PSNR, compression ratio, compression time versus number of processors and the workload granularity are also presented.

System-level events, such as process switching and task migration, have a major effect on the performance of computer systems. "Smart" is a new simulation environment that extends existing simulators, such as MINT, with the capability to emulate the effect of such mechanisms. "Smart" provides a user friendly interface (GUI) that allows control of different system parameters and mechanisms e.g. the type of cache coherency protocols, cache organization, scheduling policies of processes and threads, etc. The Smart environment can be used either for monitoring, analyzing and measuring different system events, or as a powerful visual based debugging tool. This paper describes the "Smart" environment and demonstrates the importance of simulating system-level mechanisms and events in order to understand the overall performance of modern architectures. The Smart simulator presented here was developed to support the simulation of shared memory architectures, and we indicate that similar software environments can be developed to simulate other parallel and distributed architectures as well.

Dedicated Cluster parallel Computers (DCPCs) are emerging as low-cost high performance environments for many important applications in science and engineering. A significant class of applications that perform well on a DCPC are coarse-grain applications that involve large amounts of file I/O. Current research in parallel file systems for distributed systems is providing a mechanism for adapting these applications to the DCPC environment. We present the parallel Virtual File System (PVFS), a system that provides disk striping across multiple nodes in a distributed parallel computer and file partitioning among tasks in a parallel program. PVFS is unique among similar systems in that it uses a streams-based approach that represents each file access with a single set of request parameters and decouples the number of network messages from details of the files striping and partitioning. PVFS also provides support for efficient collective file accesses and allows overlapping file partitions. We present results of early performance experiments that show PVFS achieves excellent speedups in accessing moderately sized file segments.

DAISy (distributed Array of Inexpensive systems) is a 16 node PC cluster running a full UNIX compatible operating system. The network media used includes standard 10Mb/s (10BASE-2) Ethernet (used for client node NFS mounts and any client node interactive work users find necessary), and, switched 100Mbs/ (100BASE-TX) Fast Ethernet (used for user program message passing traffic). The DAISy cluster is used to investigate the viability of commodity PC technology to perform computation of scientific and engineering problems traditionally performed on 'Supercomputers,' and more recently high performance RISC workstations and clusters of RISC workstations. Performance analysis of the various single node subsystems were carried out, along with performance analysis of the cluster as a whole on a number of parallel applications. The results show that the current Pentium 90MHz CPU and motherboards used are well within that of many low-end workstations offered by traditional workstation vendors.

In this paper we propose user-controllable I/O operations and explore the effects of them with some synthetic access patterns. The operations allow users to determine a file structure matching the access patterns, control the layout and distribution of data blocks on physical disks, and present various access patterns with a minimum number of I/O operations. The operations do not use a file pointer to access data as in typical file systems, which eliminates the overhead of managing the offset of the file, making it easy to share data and reducing the number of I/O operations.

Considers a parallel triangular solver on a distributed-memory MIMD computer. Three task partitioning methods are discussed, with both task assignment and task scheduling. Their estimated times are provided by using a performance model and a parallel performance evaluation methodology. The optimal task granularities are deduced by the analysis of their performance. Experiences on a transputer-based multicomputer are given.

The distributed recovery block (DRB) scheme is an approach for realizing both hardware and software fault tolerance in real time distributed and parallel computer systems. We point out that in order for the DRB scheme to yield a high fault coverage and a low recovery time bound, some important consistency requirements must be satisfied by the replicated application tasks in a DRB computing station. Newly identified approaches for meeting the consistency requirements, which involve, among other things, integration of network surveillance and reconfiguration (NSR) techniques with the DRB scheme, are presented. The paper then presents an analysis of the recovery time bound of the DRB scheme. The analysis is based on a modular structured concrete implementation model of the DRB scheme for local area network (LAN) based distributed computer systems, which is called the DRB/T LAN scheme and incorporates an NSR scheme and the newly identified consistency ensuring mechanisms. Finally, we consider approaches for applying the DRB scheme to new types of application computation segments that were not considered before and then discuss approaches for meeting the consistency requirements in such DRB stations. These approaches broaden the application range of the DRB scheme significantly.

The objective of the paper is to present the advantages of distributed implementations of global optimization algorithms while improving the performance of control mechanisms in complex systems. As an example of such systems, the authors use a multireservoir water system working under flood conditions. The optimization problem consists in determining, for all reservoirs, parameters through which a control center influences releases from the reservoirs. Since this problem involves cumbersome calculations (e.g. numerical simulations), it seems reasonable to apply nongradient global optimization methods and parallel supercomputers for its solution. In the paper, the authors describe how the proper optimization algorithm was chosen and to what extent its distributed implementation improved the efficiency of the control system.
