Performance of I/O intensive applications on a multiprocessor system depends mostly on the variety of disk access delays encountered in the I/O system. Over the years, the improvement in disk performance has taken place more slowly than the corresponding increase in processor speeds. It is therefore necessary to model I/O delays and evaluate performance benefits of moving an application to a better multiprocessor system. We perform such an analysis by measuring I/O delays for a synthesized application that uses a parallel distributed file system. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance benefits of better disks in a multiprocessor system. We report on how the I/O performance would be affected if an application were to run on a system which would have better disks and communication links. In this study, we show a substantial improvement in the performance of an I/O system with better disks and communication links with respect to the existing system.

Multiprocesssor systems have emerged as an important computing means for real-time applications and have received increasing attention than before. However until now, little research has been done on the problem of on-line scheduling of parallel tasks with deadlines in partitionable multiprocessor systems. In this paper, we propose a new on-line scheduling algorithm, called Deferred Earliest Deadline First (DEDF) for such systems. The main idea of the DEDF algorithm is to defer the scheduling as late as possible, so that a set of jobs is scheduled at a time instead of one at a time. For processor allocation using DEDF, we have introduced a new concept-Available Time Window (ATW). By using ATW the system utilization can be improved and thereby enabling the system to meet the deadline of more number of tasks. Simulation results for a hypercube indicate that the DEDF algorithm performs significantly better than the earlier proposed Buddy/RT and Stacking algorithms for a wide range of work loads.

This paper presents the performance analysis of the wireless medium access control (WMAC) protocol and the remote frame medium access control (RFMAC) protocol for a wireless control area network (WCAN). These two MAC protocols are suggested for distributed and centralised wireless communications respectively, as part of the complete WCAN project. The performances of the protocols are evaluated by simulating the models of the protocols using set of signals called the "SAE benchmark". The benchmark table provides an example to illustrate the application of control area network (CAN) system. This paper discusses the applicability of the wireless MAC protocols and validates its usefulness for real-time communications based on the parameters in the benchmark table.

Two facts that suggest the desirability of a hierarchical approach to cost-effective high-performance computing are empirically established in this paper. The first fact is the temporal locality of programs with respect to the degree of parallelism. Two temporal (instruction and data) locality principles are identified and empirically established for a set of programs. The impact of this behavior is discussed with respect to the proposed heterogeneous multilevel architecture. The second fact that supports the hierarchical architecture is the cost-efficiency advantage of heterogeneous over homogeneous multiprocessor systems. An initial performance analysis is presented which quantifies this fact for the proposed heterogeneous hierarchical organization. The proposed multilevel processor configuration uses fast and costly resources sparingly to reduce sequential and low parallelism bottlenecks. The resulting organization tries to balance cost, speed and parallelism granularity.

Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems has attracted increasing attention over the last few years, as it has become apparent that input/output performance, rather than CPU performance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance of future systems. This I/O bottleneck is caused by the increasing speed mismatch between processing units and storage devices, the use of multiple processors operating simultaneously in parallel and distributed systems, and by the increasing I/O demands of new classes of applications, like multimedia. It is also important to note that, to varying degrees, the I/O bottleneck exists at multiple levels of the memory hierarchy. All indications are that the I/O bottleneck will be with us for some time to come, and is likely to increase in importance. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is based on papers presented at the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops held in conjunction with the international parallel Processing symposium. This book is divided into three parts. Part I, the Introduction, contains four invited chapters which provide a tutorial survey of I/O issues in parallel and distributed systems. The chapters in Parts II and III contain selected research papers from the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops; many of these papers have been substantially revised and updated for inclusion in this volume. Part II collects the papers from both years which deal with various aspects of system software, and Part III addresses architectural issues. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses in computer architecture, software engineering, and multimedia systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

In a distributed system, executing a program often requires the access of remote data files. An efficient data transmission strategy is thus important for real-time applications. Since data files may be replicated and their locations are transparent to the executed program, it becomes the system's responsibility to select a proper file server such that data can be transmitted in an effective way. We consider the scenario that a particular program needs several data files simultaneously for its execution. Each data file may have replicas across the network. The problem is how to find a collection of file servers and the routing paths such that the data transmission time is minimum. An exhaustive approach could of course find the optimal solution. However, it pays a high computation price. We thus propose a heuristic method. Results obtained from the proposed method are encouraging.

Metacomputing is the aggregation of distributed and high-performance resources on coordinated networks. With careful scheduling, resource-intensive applications can be implemented efficiently on metacomputing systems at the sizes of interest to developers and users. In this paper, we focus on the problem of scheduling applications on metacomputing systems. We introduce the concept of application-centric scheduling in which everything about the system is evaluated in terms of its impact on the application. Application-centric scheduling is used by virtually all metacomputer programmers to achieve performance on metacomputing systems. We describe two successful metacomputing applications to illustrate this approach, and describe AppLeS (Application-Level Scheduling) agents which generalize the application-centric scheduling approach. Finally, we show preliminary results which compare AppLeS-derived schedules with conventional strip and blocked schedules for a 2D Jacobi code.

We present a unified approach for delivering hypermedia/multimedia objects over broadband networks. Documents are stored in various multimedia servers, while the inline data may reside in their own media servers, attached to the multimedia servers. The described service consists of several multimedia servers and a set of functions that intend to present to the end user interactive information in real time. Users interact with the service requesting multimedia documents on demand. Various media streams are transmitted over different parallel connections according to their transmission requirements. The hypermedia documents are structured using a hypermedia markup language that keeps information of the spatio temporal relationships among document's media components. In order to deal with the variant network behavior, buffering manipulation mechanisms and grading of the transmitted media quality techniques are proposed to smooth presentation and synchronization anomalies.
