Performance analysis integration in the Uintah software development cycle

The increasing complexity of high-performance computing environments and programming methodologies presents challenges for empirical performance evaluation. Evolving parallel and distributed systems require performance technology that can be flexibly configured to observe different events and associated performance data of interest. It must also be possible to integrate performance evaluation techniques with the programming paradigms and software engineering methods. This is particularly important for tracking performance on parallel software projects involving many code teams over many stages of development. This paper describes the integration of the TAU and XPARE tools in the Uintah Computational Framework (UCF). Discussed is the use of performance mapping techniques to associate low-level performance data to higher levels of abstraction in UCF and the use of performance regression testing to provide a historical portfolio of the evolution of application performance. A scalability study shows the benefits of integrating performance technology in building large-scale parallel applications.

Overlap of computations and communications is an effective mechanism to improve the performance of parallel/distributed applications significantly. This overlap can be achieved efficiently by using data partitioning and properly scheduling the data transfer. Various asynchronous communication primitives, that are provided by most message passing tools (e.g. PVM, MPI), can be used to implement the required overlapping mechanism. In this paper, we present a design model, the distributed software Design Model (DSDM) and show how it can be applied to optimize parallel/distributed applications. We show through several examples, the Master-Slave Merge Sorting Application and the astrophysical N-Body Problem, how the DSDM can be used to develop efficient and optimized implementations of parallel and distributed algorithms. © 2002 IEEE.

Interacting processes an distributed systems save their checkpoints on local disks for efficiency reasons. But, because local checkpoints get unavailable with failing hosts, redundancy schemes similar to RAID-like storage schemes have to be used. In such systems, checkpoints are stable under a particular fault model because they can get reconstructed in the distributed system. In this paper, two variants of stable checkpoint storage are compared, (a) parity grouping over local checkpoints and (ii) RAID-like distribution of each checkpoint using a software based distributed storage system. An analysis is given to compare costs for collective checkpoint creation, recovery of a single process and rollback of all processes. The results show that despite the differences in detail, checkpointing using a distributed storage system is a reasonable solution. © 2003 IEEE.

The high-performance requirements needed to implement the most advanced functionalities of current and future Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) are challenging the development processes of CPSs. On one side, CPSs rely on model-driven engineering (MDE) to satisfy the non-functional constraints and to ensure a smooth and safe integration of new features. On the other side, the use of complex parallel and heterogeneous embedded processor architectures becomes mandatory to cope with the performance requirements. In this regard, parallel programming models, such as OpenMP or CUDA, are a fundamental brick to fully exploit the performance capabilities of these architectures. However, parallel programming models are not compatible with current MDE approaches, creating a gap between the MDE used to develop CPSs and the parallel programming models supported by novel and future embedded platforms. The AMPERE project will bridge this gap by implementing a novel software architecture for the development of advanced CPSs. To do so, the proposed software architecture will be capable of capturing the definition of the components and communications described in the MDE framework, together with the non-functional properties, and transform it into key parallel constructs present in current parallel models, which may require extensions. These features will allow for making an efficient use of underlying parallel and heterogeneous architectures, while ensuring compliance with non-functional requirements, including those on real-time performance of the system.

The paper presents a model that is useful for developing resource allocation algorithms for distributed real-time systems that operate in dynamic environments. Interesting aspects of the model include dynamic environments, utility and service levels, which provide a means for graceful degradation in resource-constrained situations and support optimization of the allocation of resources. The paper also provides an allocation algorithm that illustrates how to use the model for producing feasible, optimal resource allocations. © 2003 IEEE.

The cost of poor or repeat engineering in complex control systems is extremely high, and flexibility in software design and implementation is one of the key factors in staying competitive in the market. Complexity can be managed most effectively if the underlying software systems support structured, standardised, high-level abstraction layers that encapsulate unnecessary details behind well-defined interfaces. Moreover, since the costs of software maintenance are often as high as that of initial development, the ease with which it is possible flexibly to reconfigure, re-engineer, and replace software components in operational systems is also critical. In this paper, we present a lightweight, component-based approach to engineering embedded real-time control software, which is realized in the form of a middleware system named MIREA. The middleware supports dynamic reconfiguration of components written in C/C++, and addresses variability management in relation to non-functional properties, such as quality-of-service (QoS) and real-time scheduling. Users are allowed to componentize existing libraries easily, such as the standard NIST 4D/Real-time Control systems (RCS) library, which has been successfully used in many U.S government-driven intelligent control projects, and to reuse them as dynamically reconfigurable components. A realistic illustration is provided showing how control systems are structured and reconfigured using our approach. In fact, we discuss our approach to control using a fusion of NIST RCS as a means of architecting a real time control system and MIREA as a means of realising that architecture. Our progress to date suggests that MIREA is indeed well suited as a middleware facilitating the construction of efficient, lightweight, and scalable real-time embedded control systems.

Multi-domain unified modeling is an important development direction in the study of complex system. Modelica is a popular multi-modeling language. It describes complex systems by mathematical equations, solves the high-index of Differential algebraic equations (DAE) generated by modeling. But in this process, the index reduction based on structural index, which is a key step of solving high-index DAE, will fail with small probability. Based on the combinatorial optimization theory, it analyzes the incorrect problem leaded by the index reduction algorithm for solving the DAE, gives the algorithm of detecting and correcting the incorrect of structural index reduction for matrix pencils. It implements the algorithm of detecting and correcting, and apply the algorithm into solving first-order linear time-invariant DAE system. The experiment result shows that for first-order linear time-invariant DAE, the problem about the failure of structural index reduction can be solved by the combinatorial optimization theory.

As computational devices continue to advance, there are reasons to examine their foundations a little more deeply, and to ask whether there may not be something more to be found. The fundamental manner in which hardware and software interact is poorly understood, and yet there is little indication in the literature that this is being discussed or explored. In spite of our technological achievements, we are at a loss to precisely define the boundaries between hardware and software, and to describe the nature of their interface. This paper aims to raise some of the major issues and questions, to propose a hardware-information duality, and to suggest directions in which further research might be pursued.

The ability to check whether the modeled system satisfies certain properties is a very important aspect in the software development process. Many object-oriented methods do not pay enough attention to the behavioral descriptions. Indeed, they mostly do not provide formally founded descriptions that can be checked automatically. This paper presents an integrated approach, consisting of formally founded description techniques, an expressive temporal logic for specifying properties, and a model checking mechanism for automatically checking whether some executions of the specified system satisfy the required properties.
