Nowadays, modern mobile devices have become real personal computers that increase the ability of building/extending existing applications by combining several technologies such as camera, GPS, 3D graphics and permanent Internet connection. The resulting integration of such technologies allows to run complex applications, such as augmented reality and Social Networks. The goal of the present research is to support mobile users' daily activities, by developing advanced solutions which take into account principles of human-computer interaction and usability. In this paper we propose to exploit the potential of the augmented reality and the ability to "communicate" of social networks to create a mobile social network, where each community user may exploit advanced location based services, such as navigation through a two dimensional map, exploration of an area through a camera mode, and identification of points of interest embedded in an augmented reality environment.

For adequate operations of those precision instruments like hard disc and digital video disc drives, the effects of rotating vibrations must be carefully considered in the design stage. In this paper, an axial-winding single-phase brush less DC motor is adopted to form the single-phase spindle motor for its lower cost and better capability of vibration reduction. With proper structure refinement, it is verified that the undesired vibrations and cogging torques of this motor design can be much reduced, and large axial force can be generated to adjust the operational axial displacement. Hence a refined single-phase spindle motor structure that can provide stable operations for related drive applications is thus provided.

Most rendering engines subdivide arbitrary polygons into a collection of triangles, which are then rendered independently of each other. This procedure can introduce severe artifacts when rendering texture-mapped quadrilaterals. These errors result from a fundamental limitation: the impossibility of performing general projective mappings using only the information available at the vertices of a single triangle. Texture mapping involving arbitrary quadrilaterals has practical importance in applications that use real images as textures, such as in image-based modeling and rendering. The paper presents an efficient adaptive-subdivision solution to the problem, which, due to its simplicity, can be easily incorporated into graphics APIs.

We present a novel constraint-based keyframe extraction technique, Key Probe. Based on animator-specified constraints, the method converts a skeleton-based motion or animated mesh to a keyframe-based representation. In contrast to previous curve simplification or clustering methods, we cast the keyframe extraction problem as a constrained matrix factorization problem and solve the problem based on the least-squares optimization technique. The extracted keyframes have two uses: they could be used for browsing or they may be blended to reconstruct all other frames of an animation. Our approach is general and suitable for both rigid-body and soft-body animations. Experiments on various types of animation examples show that the proposed method produces remarkable results in terms of quality and compression ratio. Empirical tests also show that our algorithm consistently offers better efficiency than those by principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA).

We propose a framework for data-driven manipulation and synthesis of component-based vector graphics. Using labelled vector graphical images of a given type of object as input, our processing pipeline produces training data, learns a probabilistic Bayesian network from that training data, and offer various data-driven vector-related tools using synthesis functions. The tools ranges from data-driven vector design to automatic synthesis of vector graphics. Our tools were well received by designers, our model provides good generalisation performance, also from small data sets, and our method for synthesis produces vector graphics deemed significantly more plausible compared with alternative methods.
