Recently, real-time Graphical Simulation and applications of mobile computing devices in wireless Environment have shown promising foreground in WMS system, as a result of the former gives a way to shifting data to another intuitive and easier understudied visualization, and the latter promote real-time data acquisition. But the B/S structure is a fat server and thin client architecture, most of the logic and computing are deployed on the server side. So that when the need for graphical simulation and applications of mobile computing devices in wireless network comes to B/S structure, server performance will decline distinctly. This paper presents an efficient architecture for semi-real-time graphical simulation based on mobile computing devices in wireless network. In the architecture, the real-time graphics generation will deployed not only the server but also the client, and graphical layers decomposed into three varieties according to the need for real-time refresh, the client will deal with them respectively. Experimental results demonstrate improvement of computation efficiency without performance degradation.

The clustering of putative protein/Open Reading Frame (ORF) sequences available from large-scale metagenomics survey projects is a core analytical function that has led to the identification and characterization of novel protein families of environmental microbial communities. The implementation of this function, however, is currently challenged not only by data size but also by data complexity. In this paper, we present a CPU-GPU implementation of a randomized graph clustering heuristic called Shingling, which was originally developed by Gibson et al. Our implementation uses the CPU and GPU for different stages of computation, using GPUs for the most time-consuming steps. Experimental results of a 2M ocean metagenomics data set obtained from the Sorcerer II Global Ocean Sampling project show that our new implementation is able to achieve a ~7X speedup over our serial implementation without using asynchronous CPU-GPU communication, with the GPU part alone contributing to over ~374X speedup in the accelerated part. Qualitative evaluation of the 2M data set shows that our method is able to improve sensitivity of clustering over existing methods, and is more successful in recruiting more sequences into the clustering without impacting the overall specificity. As a demonstration of a large scale run, we were able to cluster a real world homology graph, containing 11M vertices and 640M edges, and constructed from sequences of an ongoing pacific Ocean metagenomics survey project, in about 94 minutes. © 2013 IEEE.

Neuromorphic engineering takes inspiration from biology to design brain-like systems that are extremely low-power, fault-tolerant, and capable of adaptation to complex environments. The design of these artificial nervous systems involves both the development of neuromorphic hardware devices and the development neuromorphic simulation tools. In this paper, we describe a simulation environment that can be used to design, construct, and run spiking neural networks (SNNs) quickly and efficiently using graphics processing units (GPUs). We then explain how the design of the simulation environment utilizes the parallel processing power of GPUs to simulate large-scale SNNs and describe recent modeling experiments performed using the simulator. Finally, we present an automated parameter tuning framework that utilizes the simulation environment and evolutionary algorithms to tune SNNs. We believe the simulation environment and associated parameter tuning framework presented here can accelerate the development of neuromorphic software and hardware applications by making the design, construction, and tuning of SNNs an easier task.

Real-time image rotation forms a core operation in many applications such as medical image processing, computer graphics and pattern recognition. Conventional rotation engines usually comprise of compute-intensive CORDIC operations that become a severe bottleneck in high-throughput applications. In this paper, we present a novel scheme that employs hierarchical computation strategies, exploits the symmetrical characteristics of the image, and performs successive pixel computations at high-speed to achieve high-throughput image rotation at low cost. We show that the proposed method leads to a significant performance gain of about 20 times over an existing CORDIC-based rotation engine with similar hardware cost.

We present an algorithm to simulate the aurora borealis, commonly known as the "northern lights", a natural phenomenon of great visual beauty and considerable scientific interest. The algorithm is based on the current understanding of the physical origin of the aurora. This natural display is mainly caused by high-energy electrons originating in the Sun and entering the Earth's atmosphere in narrow regions centered on the magnetic poles. These electrons collide with atmospheric atoms which are excited to higher energy levels. The excited atoms emit rapidly varying visible light in a curtain-like volume as they return to lower energy levels thereby creating the aurora. By simulating these light emissions along with the spatial and temporal distribution of the entering electrons, we are able to render the major visual aspects of auroral displays. This approach also allows the representation of time-dependent features that characterize the dynamic nature of the aurorae. The applicability of this auroral model for artistic and research purposes is illustrated through comparisons of synthetic images with photographs of real auroral displays.

This improved efficiency stems from a well-designed hardware-software interaction capable of handling massive data transfers across hierarchical layers without performance loss. By combining multiple TurboVG cores, the library can support screen resolutions of up to Full-HD 1080p.

Scientific visualization is a powerful and popular technique and is very useful in many areas of science and engineering. It mainly uses computer graphics to view or explore three-dimensional (3D) objects, natural phenomenon, or numerical data. Virtual reality (VR) is an application of scientific visualization and is getting popular for applications associated with high-performance computing. To help Council of Agriculture, Taiwan (COA), promote the importance of farmland conservation, and to help elementary education authorities on basic agricultural, ecological education, in this study, a 3D virtual environment is developed to demonstrate the virtual farmland theme and associated temporal and spatial data and information. The system features (1) construction and visualization of the virtual farmland environment, (2) speedup and animation of the embedded objects, (3) multimedia effects, (4) display of the numerical analysis results of crops growing affected by nitrogen in land simulated by 2DSOIL model, sand (5) display of the numerical analysis results of groundwater flow and nitrogen transport in the farmland simulated by GMS-FEMWATER. Several computer graphics accelerating schemes, such as space partition, view frustum culling (VFC), billboard, and collision detection, were used to speedup the rendering. Users can immerse, navigate and interact with objects in the 3D virtual farmland ecology environment.

Nowadays SoC development involves both software and hardware designs. However, the performance bottleneck occurs either in software/hardware or even both. But present performance monitoring tools usually evaluates one of software/hardware performance, which is not quite enough for nowadays SoC designs. Furthermore, due to increasing complexity of user requirements, the embedded OS, such as Linux is introduced to manage the numerous hardware resources for the complicated applications. This paper proposes a performance monitoring tool suite (PMTS) which is capable of analyzing performance of the user program, device driver and system bus for a 3D graphics SoC application under Linux simultaneously. PMTS monitors the bus utilization/contentions and helps the designers to find out the performance bottleneck of both software and hardware efficiently. The experimental result shows that all the software processing time of the 3D graphics SoC application is over 80% of total processing time, which shouldn't be happened in the 3D graphics SoC environment.

There is a trend for the information products that are integrated by computer, communication, and consumer electronics. The OS is required more compact and practical. An embedded system STARTH is developed based on the core of the Motorola PPSM that is a real time 32-bit kernel with prioritized interrupt scheduling. All tasks are interrupt-driven. The PPSM kernel does not access hardware device directly. The kernel controls all peripherals indirectly, through software device drivers. The PPSM tools consist of pen input, graphics, database, text, character input, system and communication. The PPSM toolsets, together with its device drivers, provides the basic contro of the LCD, the drawing functions, the real time clock and the UART. The architecture of the embedded system STARTH on the Dragon Ball EZ platform is discussed in parts in details. The development environments of both software and hardware are described. The system is analyzed from its initialization, registration to system management, even the applications programming. The STARTH is tested and run on the hardware system of Dragon Ball platform. It is found that STARTH is practical and reliable for personal information devices.
