A software process model (SPM) provides an abstract description of the order in which related activities of software development will be undertaken. Many process models available that can be adapted for software development. However, the selection of the best suitable process model with reference to the problem definition, constraints, and stakeholder requirements is a challenging task. Typically, in a software engineering (SE) course, students gain knowledge about SPM and realize their usage via classroom lectures and course projects. It is felt that if the basic knowledge imparted, through the fundamental SE course, is supplemented with some focused sessions about the SPM, then it will not only enable students to think in terms of the SPM but will also motivate them to harness the best practices of software development. This paper presents a preliminary study highlighting our experience on SPM-oriented teaching to impart the concept of requirement elicitation and process modeling, by performing a play (drama skit) annotating real-world scenarios. The feedbacks of students have been collected to evaluate whether this exercise helped them in understanding the processes they have to undergo during software development. Additionally, we have compared the student's feedback and performance in the project and reported the finding of the study.

Technical software doeumentation is :an essential source of knowledge supporting many different software development activities and stakeholders, In his paper we report on use cases, existing documentafion practice and open challenges for technical software documentation in a company from the manufacturing domain. Further, we present an approach for automatically provkling technical software documentation as a service. The approach has been validated in an industrial setting, i.e., we report on our experiences and lessons learned. Validation shwas that while U p-to-da te and dynanaically explorable documentation could be provided, the proposed solution failed in sufficiently supporting different stakeholders and their concerns i.e., it failed in providing sustainable documentation and knowledge preservation over time.

This experience paper presents observations, lessons learned and recommendations based on a case study of muse The case study is concerned with the development, maturation, and reuse of a business domain independent software component (horizontal reuse) in a project-driven organisation that has little previous experience with systematic software reuse The main lessons learned are that: (a) even though domain analysis can alleviate reuse mismatch problems one should not underestimate the technical problems that may arise when musing;(b) a side-effect of reuse is that software. engineering knowledge is transferred within an organisation;(c) design patterns can be as risky as they can be beneficial;and (d) there is more to architectural mismatch than "merely" packaging mismatch.

Reuse of the software development process and its knowledge and experiences is a critical factor for the success of the software project. On the other hand, the software development process needs to be tailored to reflect the specific characteristics of the software project. So, if we can retrieve a similar process to a new project, process tailoring will be less costly and less error prone because the retrieved process can be tailored to the new case with fewer modifications. In this paper, we propose the case retrieval method based on structural similarity. The structural similarity is calculated by the degree that process elements in a past case are applicable to a new project. By measuring the structural similarity, the retrieved process is ensured to be tailored to the new case with fewer modifications. We validate the usefulness of our method through the experiments using 30 cases.

Experience from industry shows that graduates in computer science generally lack many of the skills required in software development projects. This presents a challenge to academic institutions. This paper describes our experiences in implementing a course in software engineering at a Swedish university. A set of challenges is presented and it is described how these were met using a combination of lectures and project work. The results of the projects, the lessons we have learned, and the feedback from the students are discussed.

The collaborative development of shared understanding is crucial to the success of software development projects. It is also a challenging and volatile process in practice. Small organizations may be especially vulnerable due to reliance on key individuals and insufficient resource to employ several domain specialists. There is, however, minimal empirical research on sharing domain understanding in the context of small soft-ware organizations. In this paper we present the results of a field study of commercial software development practice in which we conducted semi-structured interviews with practitioners from ten such organizations. The study provides insights into practices, perceptions, and challenges related to developing shared domain understanding. Our results show that smaller organizations place particular emphasis on the use of prototypes or existing products to refine and verify domain understanding. Furthermore they perceive the biggest challenge to developing shared understanding as the quality of the client representative(s).

software engineering (SE) is a rapidly developing international discipline that requires up-to-date knowledge and skills. The need for well-educated professional software engineers is increasing globally. In China, universities are opening opportunities for collaboration and building cooperative relationships with Western universities in technology fields, including SE, to offer Chinese students possibilities for international education in China instead of studying abroad. Designing high-quality SE education in international collaborative programs faces challenges introduced by cultural factors that affect learning practices. In this study, we addressed these challenges in the context of international collaborative SE education in China. In the first step, we synthesized existing knowledge of Chinese cultural factors affecting learning by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR). In the second step, we conducted interviews with SE students and teachers in a Chinese university that is preparing an international collaborative SE program, in order to see whether the identified cultural factors are valid in the current learning contexts of SE education. The results revealed that many of the identified factors are still valid, but some of them present differently in the current context because of the novelty of the SE discipline and the changing educational environment in China.

software-to-hardware allocation plays an important role in the development of resource-constrained automotive embedded systems that are required to meet timing, reliability and power requirements. This paper proposes an Integer Linear Programming optimization approach for the allocation of fault-tolerant embedded software applications that are developed using the AUTOSAR standard. The allocation takes into account the timing and reliability requirements of the multirate software applications and the heterogeneity of their execution platforms. The optimization objective is to minimize the total power consumption of the applications that are distributed over multiple computing units. The proposed approach is evaluated using a range of different software applications from the automotive domain, which are generated using the real-world automotive benchmark. The evaluation results indicate that our proposed allocation approach is effective while meeting the timing, reliability, and power requirements of the considered automotive software applications.

In this paper we explore the areas of overlap as a mechanism for transferring ideas and approaches between the two disciplines. We exemplify the argument by showing how the "live models" approach can be applied to both contexts, based on the results of a pilot interdisciplinary project.
