Search-based software testing uses metaheuristic search techniques to automate or partially automate testing tasks, such as test case generation or test data generation. It uses a fitness function to encode the quality characteristics that are relevant, for a given problem, and guides the search to acceptable solutions in a potentially vast search space. From an industrial perspective, this opens up the possibility of generating and evaluating lots of test cases without raising costs to unacceptable levels. First, however, the applicability of search-based software engineering in an industrial setting must be evaluated. In practice, it is difficult to develop a priori a fitness function that covers all practical aspects of a problem. Interaction with human experts offers access to experience that is otherwise unavailable and allows the creation of a more informed and accurate fitness function. Moreover, our industrial partner has already expressed a view that the knowledge and experience of domain specialists are more important to the overall quality of the systems they develop than software engineering expertise. In this paper we describe our application of Interactive Search Based software Testing (ISBST) in an industrial setting. We used SBST to search for test cases for an industrial software module and based, in part, on interaction with a human domain specialist. Our evaluation showed that such an approach is feasible, though it also identified potential difficulties relating to the interaction between the domain specialist and the system.

Socio-technical Systems (STS) consist of complicated requirements that consider a variety of stakeholders' viewpoints, and are inherently complex due to heterogeneity characteristics of STS components. However, security in STS is still a major issue, which can be explained by the resulting cost and the impact of the STS intrusion on the whole enterprise. However, research related to recommending security requirements for a target STS is insufficient. Firstly, systematic acquisition of understanding the problem with rich context-awareness is not provided to STS, since the knowledge for the development and execution of STS is scattered. Secondly, the majority of security analysis focuses on only the technical approach, although it is necessary to perform a holistic analysis of STS due to heterogeneity characteristics. In order to solve these problems, we conduct a study of the three-layered framework for recommending security requirements through goal-oriented risk assessment using a Problem Domain Ontology (PDO). By using this framework, we demonstrate how the PDO is built through collecting, analyzing, and categorizing different information and knowledge from various sources, and how security requirements are recommended from the threat analysis and the goal-oriented risk assessment based on PDO. In addition, we discuss the applicability of this framework with a case study based on a real threat scenario. This paper contributes to security requirements engineering research by proposing a methodology for systematically organizing knowledge with a security requirements recommendation framework using the PDO.

This paper describes how scrum method was customized for outsourced e-commerce software projects. While the waterfall process was used in the past, outsourced projects experienced more delays and failures than the ones conducted in-house. To overcome such limitations, we decided to tailor the scrum method on three aspects: First, we produced a table that explains roles and responsibilities of project team members for every phase of the Scrum methodology. Second, we divided sprint planning into two phases, a master sprint plan and individual sprint plans. Finally, we monitored project progress based on the number of completed web pages. Application of the modified scrum method on two projects not only improved product quality but also reduced time necessary to complete the project. More than 80% of the software engineers also expressed satisfaction of the proposed approach.

software reuse is often just addressed at the level of code or low-level design. In contrast, this tutorial explains software reuse based on business processes and requirements. It presents and compares three approaches co-developed by the presenter over more than a decade. The first of these approaches deals with requirements reuse in the context of product lines. It makes the relations among product line requirements explicit, so that single system requirements in this product line can be derived consistently. A key issue is commonality and variability across different products. This tutorial shows how requirements for a product line can be modeled, selected and reused to engineer the requirements for innovative new products. The second approach for software reuse involves case-based reasoning. Instead of explicit relations between requirements (or other artifacts), similarity metrics are employed for finding the most similar software case in a repository to a given set of requirements. This even works when a single envisioned usage scenario is specified yet, and it allows reusing also requirements from retrieved cases. The major point, however, is to facilitate reusing software design (including architecture) and code from similar software cases. The third approach (still under development) strives for (partly) automating software development for certain business applications through reusing business knowledge and software, where both are tightly connected. It involves automated reuse of business processes, and software executing them, based on ontological knowledge. A key point is closing the representational gap between procedurally represented business processes and declaratively represented concepts and their relations, taxonomies, partonomies, etc. So, this is an ontology-based approach for (partly) automated software development guided by business models.

In the last decade, a variety of studies on mining software repositories has been conducted. Mining repositories has a potential to obtain useful knowledge for the future development and maintenance. When software repositories are mined, large commits in them are often excluded from mining targets because large commits include merging and we believe that large commits include peripheral modifications, which may affect negative impacts on mining code repositories. However, if large commits include code modifications, excluding large commits loses such modifications unintentionally. Moreover, such data cleansing assumes that there are no peripheral modifications in small commits. In this paper, we investigate how much peripheral modifications are included in commits in code repositories. As a result, we found that excluding large commits is insufficient to remove hindrances in commits for mining code repositories.

The software requirements decomposition can be taken as a dynamic system. According to the nonlinear dynamic requirements decomposition equations developed by us based on the nonlinear dynamic system. This paper further researched the chaotic phenomena of software requirements through simulations. The occurrence of chaos in the process of software requirements decomposition is determined by Requirements Decomposition Rate Parameter (RDRP). When RDRP is too large, a small change may cause the decomposition into an unstable state from a stable state. The decomposition may also be in chaos even if it is nearly completed when RDRP is unsuitable. Therefore, it is better for us to let the decomposition outside chaos region to get all requirements and avoid the influence of requirements change.

Although developing systems with reusable software components offers considerable scope to speed delivery of a system, their use also requires us to revise our ideas about the design process. We report on a series of laboratory-based studies in which we observed the processes by which simple component-based designs were developed, paying particular attention to when the documentation for particular components was accessed, and what information was being sought at each stage in the development of the solution. We observed quire extensive access to documentation, both for the components that were eventually used and also for those that were discarded during the process.

We have taught several distributed software engineering project courses with students and real clients [4]. During these projects, students in Pittsburgh and Munich, Germany collaborated on the development of a single system. Our experiences showed that software development is communication intensive and requires the collaboration of many stakeholders. Communication is challenging in distributed contexts: participants do not all know each other and work at different times and locations;the number of participants and their organization change during the project;participants belong to different communities. Hence, to deal with the global market place, it is critical to provide Students with distributed collaboration skills. To improve the teaching of collaboration in software engineering, we propose iBistro [2], an augmented, distributed, and ubiquitous communication space. iBistro aims to overcome problems resulting from miscommunications and information loss in informal or casual meetings. iBistro enables distributed groups to collaborate and cooperate in software projects and therefore provides an environment for learning in such diverse aspects as project management, programming skills, and social skills. With the addition of techniques from artificial intelligence, such as student modeling, and intelligent support mechanisms, such as computer supported group formation, distributed tutoring becomes feasible.

We propose AORE (Aspect-Oriented Requirements engineering) methodology for automotive software product lines. The AORE methodology enables to model the collaborations among the distributed embedded automotive software systems in terms of aspects, and generate multiple product lines while assuring a set of non-junctional requirements including safety, performance and cost. Applying to two case studies of automotive product lines modeled from the specifications, we demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed methodology.

Design and development scalability, in any engineering, requires information hiding and a specific composition mechanism in which composite items are made-up of other items. This paper shows that scalability is currently ill supported and that software engineering composites are rather special with respect to other engineering disciplines. Indeed, a software engineering composite is simultaneously a model element, an engineering artifacts and a real object, which is unprecedented in the history of engineering. This paper analyzes the requirements that composites must satisfy in order to support scalability in software engineering. We have developed CADSE (Computer Aided Domain Specific Environment in which composites are first class elements from which workspaces, concurrent engineering and view point support are provided The paper discusses our experience with Using the proposed system over the last years.
