The Direct Sampling Mixer (DSM) has a potential to realize a low cost and low power consumption software Defined Radio (SDR) receiver because it is suitable to be designed in a deep-submicron CMOS process while providing flexible programmability. This paper gives an overview of studies about the DSM. Several important approaches to improve the frequency response of the DSM and analysis of noise and nonlinearity are described. © 2011 Engineers Australia.

In order to assess the condition of smart grid equipment in real time, a method of information processing for condition monitoring based on rough set theory is presented. The condition monitoring decision table is established by collecting different kinds of information of intelligent circuit breaker which is regarded as the condition attribute set. Then the approximate minimum reduction is found after using the discernible matrix algorithm of attribute reduction in rough set theory to reduce the attribute of the decision table and value reduction to eliminate the redundancy knowledge. Finally the condition classification rules which can provide the real-time basis for operation and maintenance of smart grid are extracted.

Reverse engineering (RE) was invented primarily when the process of software engineering (SE) gained less interest because of difficulty. It was mainly used when software is developed, and the developer is no longer available. Therefore the only communication method was available is reverse engineering. However this amazing process has drifted to a different direction where reverse engineers or hackers have found their way to break into any closed source code, and been able to edit it and resell it again which cost the original author a big loss. Anti-reverse engineering techniques have appeared to stop this illegal process, some were successful and some are not. This research will discuss the level of success of these techniques. Present and customize the proposed technique base on a critical formularized and normalized analysis that is done on data collected globally involving software engineers and reverse. To support the analysis an experiment is conducted to see the ability to reverse engineer small and medium systems. © 2011 IEEE.

The objective of this work is to apply metabolic algorithm to the various items involved during the software development process. The metabolic algorithm is introduced in the rewriting mechanism of membrane or P system considering many time varying functions. Rules for requirement evolution, reaction between items in the membrane, communications between data items, process speed-up and abort rule are being proposed. The metabolic algorithm is applied for the transformation of user requirements into system requirements which can be further segregated into functional as well as non-functional requirements. The requirement elicitation is illustrated and verified to obtain the most expected requirement objects using C# programming language.

With diverse and rich offerings from cloud computing providers in the open cloud market, scientists have great opportunities to design and conduct complex applications by utilizing and combining computational resources, software components and data sources in elastic manners. While existing techniques focus mainly on resource elasticity in single cloud infrastructure, scientists expect to design their applications being elastic in multiple dimensions to ensure that they applications can operate on multiple clouds with minimum software engineering effort. In this paper we will focus on providing techniques for scientists to compose elastic high performance applications by utilizing traditional software components, user-provided components and cloud services. We characterize elastic compositions via their resource, quality, cost, available time and usage right elasticity, thus enabling scientists to evaluate and decide how to develop, deploy and control the compositions to match their elastic needs. To illustrate our approach, we will present several real-world application compositions for multi-cloud environments. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to secure the policyholders against losses due to earthquakes that are common natural calamities in Taiwan, the government launched a residential earthquake insurance system several years ago. Policyholders can be indemnified by total loss claim for quake-related losses of property. Despite there are many other professionals involved in the assessment procedure for total loss claim, the qualified adjustors from underwriters are pivotal to the assessment of total loss claims. The qualified adjustors are personnel of non-life insurance companies that underwent training courses for earthquake building damage assessment and many of them are not professionals in civil engineering. Their determination of total loss claims are based on claim standard operation procedure (SOP) established by Taiwan Residential Earthquake Insurance Fund (TREIF) and mainly relies on personal experience and knowledge of earthquake building damages. Furthermore, considering that reinforced concrete buildings account for more than 76% effective policies in Taiwan, a quantified loss model for total loss claim determination for RC buildings has been developed in 2009. In this paper, we developed an information system based on the quantified loss model and claims SOP that includes a total loss claim determination system (TLCDS) for qualified adjustors of insurance companies and a centralized database management system (TLDBMS) for TREIF. Claims handling procedure, related forms and the quantified model for determining total loss claims are discussed in the paper. It is believed the proposed information system will be helpful to enhance the efficiency and quality of damage assessment and total loss claim handling operation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The Planning and design of engineering depend on the output of surveying. Therefore the quality of surveying directly impacts that of planning and design, which in turn impacts the quality of construction. Each phase within a project life cycle set the stage for the next sustainability. A construction project requires vast material and human resources;any misstep could lead to costly wastes. A mature legal framework, sound public policy and abundant knowledge base are essential for its success. Innovation management requires systematic approaches to make use of advancements in multiple disciplines. Geographic Information System (GIS) empowers us to manage and make use of the information while minimizing the redundancy and waste. Integration is conductive to management, storage/retrieval, planning, design, study/analysis, check, and ultimately decision making. The goal is to elevate the standards in engineering, surveying, planning, design, construction and supervision. Technology management, after all, is the service provided by the engineering consulting service industry. This paper takes a close look at multiple viewpoints on the innovation for integration mechanisms of engineering consulting service industry, it's future development, quality control and regulation issues. It explores the concept and strategies on surveying, planning, design, implementation and quality control. With a methodological approach to project management, utilizing the latest technology, risk analysis and management, time and information management, rampant cost overrun can be controlled. In the end it might help government agencies and engineering consulting industry improve efficiency and establish high benchmark standard. © 2011 IEEE.

With the development of computer science, large-scale distributed simulation is becoming mature. HLA can construct new complicated simulation applications with the reusable simulation module efficiently, conveniently and cheaply according to different simulation requirement. As outstanding network simulation software, OPNET can simulate on single machine. In order to be one of large-scale distributed simulation, the framework of integration system is proposed. It contains some federates, one is Controller, the others are OPNET federates. The parameters of OPNET can be changed and the federation time can be advanced. Simulation results verify that the method is feasible;the method could make contribution to construct the large-scale military simulation applications. © 2011 IEEE.
