On the basis of Donoho's traditional method, a novel approach is proposed to estimate variance of Gaussian white noise based on the wavelet coefficients estimation of the original image. The approach makes use of the wavelet coefficients estimation of the original image to obtain more pure noise coefficients, then does estimation once again based on the Donoho's formula. Simulation results are presented which indicate that the proposed approach is better than traditional ones, especially in scenarios where there is less noise or much more image details. © 2010 IEEE.

Modeling and simulation of a microcantilever designed to achieve high resonant frequency on the sensing area is presented in this paper. Simple analytical models of the microcantilever are generated to achieve estimates of the device performance and to check the validity of the subsequent simulation. CoventorWare simulation software is used to design and process the micromachined microcantilever gas sensing platforms. Results indicate that with a periodic force of amplitude 0.05 N applied at the top of microcantilever, increasing its thickness from μ1 m to 5 μm increases the natural frequency from 10.203 KHz to 50.709 KHz. On the other hand an increase in the lengths of the microcantilever from 90 μm to 170 μm decreases its natural frequency from 30.437 KHz to 17.70 KHz, while increasing its widths from 60 μm to 140 μm increases its natural frequency from 23.854 KHz to 35.84 KHz. A comparison between simulation and mathematical model results for frequency showed close agreement. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a reference framework, called BUD, to manage a large shared bank of unstructured data. This paper lists several important issues on managing or maintaining the unstructured data in BUD. BUD stores and manages the ever-growing unstructured data by introducing a novel technique called free-table, which is a conceptual view for endusers and a physical entity maintained by transactional storage manager of BUD. Free-table is cell-oriented but not columnoriented as relational table. It can store various types of unstructured data in cell with different versions. Additionally, we study two cases, VMP and PXRDB, to show that our proposal is feasible and tractable. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper is made from a certain type of truck crane hydraulic lifting mechanism system as an object, then the second lifting working condition is analyzed. With AMESim, according to the hydraulic system diagram building lifting mechanism hydraulic system simulation model, hereby corresponding simulation conditions is set and the effects of secondary slide response on input signal, hoisting load, discharge and speed of pump, fluid resistance of one-way throttle is studied. This research on truck crane hoisting mechanism hydraulic system provides the theory basis for the design improvement, the relevant research methods and means have reference on the research of other engineering machinery hydraulic system working characteristics.

Multiple sensor data fusion is a hot topic in the academic research. This paper developed an effective scheme to extract the flight trajectories from different sensors and searched their common characters by matching algorithm, which removed some abnormal points in each extracted trajectories and exploited cubic spline interpolation method to register the intersected parts of two trajectories which belongs to one target. Due to the accuracy of different observations from different sensors, the approach utilized by Least Square (LS) to estimate noise covariance for consequential processing, and then applied distributed Kalman filter to combine their measured trajectories to one target trajectory. Finally, the paper predicted target trajectory with prior knowledge and evaluated its accuracy via simulation, which showed the proposed approach had effectively integrated the multiple data and predicted the flight tracks. ©2010 IEEE.

software validation is an attempt to ensure the product fulfills its specific intended purpose. software validation is very important since software is widely embedded in devices, and these devices are ubiquitous in our daily life nowadays. As software is getting more complex, the software validation process is getting more complicated and time consuming. The study of software validation is therefore an important active research field with voluminous publications. The sheer volume of software validation related literatures hinders our comprehending of its content and context. We therefore utilize the intellectual structure construction and knowledge domain visualization techniques developed by the information scientist to ease the task of understanding the main themes of this research domain. Base on the analysis, we can see the research themes of software validation may be divided into two main groups: the first one deals with systems with interweaving hardware and software related issues, such as real-time systems, parallel systems;the other one deals with model checking related issues, including automata theory and temporal logic. ©2010 IEEE.

Facing the increasingly complicated regional electric power grid, the designing of operation modes using traditional methods needs a large amount of work and is prone to turn up man-made negligence for workers who design them. This paper introduces the theoretic ideas of making decision on operation modes by artificial intelligence technology and the software programming method. Aimed at workers' demands, the software realizes assistant function through intelligent logic reasoning.

Given a set of lists, where items of each list are sorted by the ascending order of their values, the objective of this paper is to figure out the common items that appear in all of the lists efficiently. This problem is sometimes known as common items extraction from sorted lists. To solve this problem, one common approach is to scan all items of all lists sequentially in parallel until one of the lists is exhausted. However, we observe that if the overlap of items across all lists is not high, such sequential access approach can be significantly improved. In this paper, we propose two algorithms, MergeSkip and MergeESkip, to solve this problem by taking the idea of skipping as many items of lists as possible. As a result, a large number of comparisons among items can be saved, and hence the efficiency can be improved. We conduct extensive analysis of our proposed algorithms on one real dataset and two synthetic datasets with different data distributions. We report all our findings in this paper. © 2010 IEEE.

The project entails the design and engineering of a wireless smoke detector unit and network. The premise of the wireless network is to alert and to set off all of the smoke detectors in the network if one smoke detector is set off. The hardware modules include the PIC microcontroller, temperature sensor, smoke sensor, low battery sensor, transmitter, and receiver. The software component includes the program and code implemented via the PIC microcontroller. In its completion and entirety, the smoke detector unit properly functions and in the manner it was originally planned and designed. © 2010 IEEE.

As a small-scale renewable energy source, micro-hydropower can substitute fossil fuel to relief the energy shortage and acquire comprehensive benefits for the society, ecology as well as economy in mountain areas. However, the development and promotion of micro-hydropower are constrained by inferior management level and limited understanding on its benefits, of which only direct economic benefit is considered. This paper developed a comprehensive management information system for micro-hydropower using Visual C# and Access. The system was divided into four modules (data query, data editing, evaluation & analysis, plus planning & design) for three kinds of users (managers, investors and users). Specifically, the evaluation & analysis module is developed via analytic hierarchy process (AHP), which decomposed the module into five layers, namely the target layer, sub-target layer, criterion layer, index layer and index factor layer, where twenty nine index factors were employed to deliver an objective evaluation. In the planning & design module, the system offers a useful sub-module for optimal pipe diameter selection. In addition, the system covers a wide range of target users. For top managers and professional users, the system leaves plenty of room to perform analysis and evaluation for strategic decisions;for investors and users with limited professional knowledge, the system transforms the complicated mathematical model into simple parameter selection and delivers the optimal evaluation results in a user-friendly way for easier understanding. The study also reveals the power of management information system in the energy engineering filed. ©2010 IEEE.
