An object-oriented OOPM model for project management and control is proposed in this paper. It employs object-oriented features, together with utilizing extended Petri net techniques, to provide a sound specification of hierarchical structures of the software development process. In the model, object types specify the project activities and their accessed process components with a textual representation as well as a graphical representation; the generalization-specialization and whole-part features are utilized particularly in the hierarchical structure of object types to provide project managers at different levels with respective abstract levels of information about the project progress. With the specification of object types, an object model can be created which describes level by level the behaviors of activity objects and how they interact with component objects; an extended Petri net is used at the bottom level that specifies in more detail how activity objects access component objects. To be practical for its applications, the OOPM model supports sufficient formality such that project managers can easily comprehend and monitor the development process; automatic tools can also be generated to facilitate specifying and monitoring the project.

Educational game design environments have long been employed as an engaging medium for teaching computer programming and software engineering concepts such as objects, agents, instances, behavior, and interaction. However, in contrast to the collaborative nature of programming, in particular among novice programmers, existing game design environments are solitary desktop-based applications with no or very limited support for sharing and collaboration. We have taken advantage of Web 2.0 technologies and its participative culture to develop a collaborative platform around game design activities that encourages social learning and integrates into the students' online social presence and lifestyle. We have employed open-Web technologies to build a game design environment using only HTML5 and JavaScript that lets users practice the game design and programming activities right inside their browser. Game design and game playing run on the client while an associated website hosts the created games and supports collaboration. This paper reports on the design, implementation, and evaluation of the game design environment. The preliminary evaluation of Agent Web's usability and performance demonstrates that not only does Agent Web meet its design goals, but also that the current Web is a hospitable environment for end-user game programming both on desktop and mobile devices.

Architecture descriptions greatly contribute to the understanding, evaluation and evolution of software but despite this, up-to-date software architecture views are rarely available. Typically only initial descriptions of the static view are created but during the development and evolution process the software drifts away from its description. Methods and corresponding tool support for reconstructing and evaluating the current architecture views have been developed and proposed, but they usually address the reconstruction of static and dynamic views separately. Especially the dynamic views are usually bloated with low-level information (e.g., Object interactions) making the understanding and evaluation of the behavior very intricate. To overcome this, we presented ARAMIS, a general architecture for building tool-based approaches that support the architecture-centric evolution and evaluation of software systems with a strong focus on their behavior. This work presents ARAMIS-CICE, an instantiation of ARAMIS. Its goal is to automatically test if the run-time interactions between architecture units match the architecture description. Furthermore, ARAMIS-CICE characterizes the intercepted behavior using two newly-defined architecture metrics. We present the fundamental concepts of ARAMIS-CICE: its meta-model, metrics and implementation. We then discuss the results of a two-folded evaluation. The evaluation shows very promising results.

In order to share the knowledge of intrusion among distributed hosts and make the intrusion detect packages more efficient and reliable, a framework of distributed incremental intrusion detection based on SVM is proposed in the study. In this framework, the locate SVM detects the local attacks and take charge of collecting the new typical samples. A center SVM summarizes the distributed samples and incorporates them to build the incremental SVM for locals. The simulation experiments with KDD Cup 1999 data demonstrate that our proposed method achieves the increasing performance for intrusion detection. The framework is valuable to design distributed intrusion detection system.

Statistical debugging is a technique that mines data obtained from software executions in order to identify the program statements that are relevant to program bugs. Specifically, program predicates are injected into the program during compilation and statistics about those predicates are collected during the program execution. When bugs are found but the developers have no clue where the bugs are, they may call such a statistical debugger for help. The debugger ranks the injected predicates according to their statistical relevancy to bugs and presents the suspicious ones to the developers. When a bug is found and fixed, but the updated program still contains (some other) bugs, the preceding procedure is iterated until all bugs are fixed. There are two types of predicate-based statistical debugger: one type returns only simple predicates, another type returns only complex predicates. We envision that the next wave of statistic debuggers should be able to return both, depending on the kinds of bugs manifested in the software. In this paper, we take the first step and study the metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of statistical debuggers that can return both types of predicate predictors (simple or complex).

Comparing and understanding differences between old and new versions of source code are necessary in various software development situations. However, if refactoring is applied between those versions, then the source code differences are more complicated, and understanding them becomes more difficult. Although many techniques for extracting refactoring effects from the differences have been studied, it is necessary to exclude the extracted refactorings' effects and reconstruct the differences for meaningful and understandable ones with no refactoring effect. As described in this paper, we propose a novel technique to address this difficulty. Using our technique, we extract the refactoring effects and then apply them to the old version of source code to produce the differences without refactoring effects. We also implemented a support tool that helps separate refactorings automatically. An evaluation of open source software showed that our tool is applicable to all target refactorings. Our technique is therefore useful in real situations. Evaluation testing also demonstrated that the approach reduced the code differences more than 21%, on average, and that developers can understand more changes from the differences using our approach than when using the original one in the same limited time.

Dynamic reconfiguration enables components of a distributed system to be updated without restarting the whole system. One major challenge of this technology lies in how to preserve the system consistency while minimizing the disruption. Ma et al. proposed an approach to meet the challenge by managing runtime dependencies among components. However, this approach puts heavy burden on network communication as it requires components to send out every dependency changing event in each ongoing transaction, which is unnecessary in the concurrent environment. In this paper, we propose a transaction-versioning approach that identifies correct version of components for all ongoing transactions. The process can be completed within one single round of message changing among involved components. Comparing with Ma's approach, the communication overhead of our approach is linear with the system scale, which is greatly reduced especially when multiple transactions are running on the system, while the timeliness is not affected. Extensive experiments through simulation show the correctness and efficiency of our approach.

In modern life, interactions between human beings frequently occur in meetings, where topics are discussed. Semantic knowledge of meetings can be revealed by discovering interaction patterns from these meetings. An existing method mines interaction patterns from meetings using tree structures. However, such a tree-based method may not capture all kinds of triggering relations between interactions, and it may not distinguish a participant of a certain rank from another participant of a different rank in a meeting. Hence, the tree-based method may not be able to find all interaction patterns such as those about correlated interaction. In this paper, we propose to mine interaction patterns from meetings using an alternative data structure - namely, a directed acyclic graph (DAG). Specifically, a DAG captures both temporal and triggering relations between interactions in meetings. Moreover, to distinguish one participant of a certain rank from another, we assign weights to nodes in the DAG. As such, a meeting can be modeled as a weighted DAG, from which weighted frequent interaction patterns can be discovered. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of our proposed DAG-based method for mining interaction patterns from meetings. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

The paper argues that, in the management of software development projects involving teleworkers, certain processes and base practices need more careful management than in projects carried out in the traditional centralized development environment. Based on the results of our surveys (a series of studies conducted in software engineering principles and in management methodology of teleworking), a number of key issues specific to telework conditions have been identified. A new software Process Improvement approach for Teleworking Environment (SPITE) has been developed as a major contribution to the software industry, which fills an important gap in software process modeling. The focus of the paper is to present an in-depth analysis of some of these issues that are not addressed in the current process models. Three processes and twenty-five base practices are created and used to provide major input to the development of SPITE.
