We report on the propagation and preservation characteristics of orbital angular momentum (OAM) through turbid tissue-like scattering media. Utilizing both computational simulation and analysis alongside experimental observations, we demonstrate that OAM light preserves phase memory despite propagation through highly scattering environments on a microscopic level (10-6). The study establishes exceptional sensitivity to refractive index variations within the microscopic range and demonstrates a novel approach to phase preservation analysis in complex media. Our findings provide significant implications for biomedical imaging, secure optical communications, and high-precision applications. © 2025 SPIE

Pre-term birth (PTB) significantly impacts neonatal mortality and morbidity, causing developmental complications like neurological disorders. Our study used Mueller Matrix Imaging, alongside staining histological techniques, to investigate cervical remodeling during pregnancy. Cervical samples from pregnant mice at various gestational stages were analyzed, revealing detailed views of the extracellular matrix and cellular components. Complementary methods, including Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and a range of optical imaging techniques, were used to further explore tissue composition and vascular distribution. This multimodal approach offers a more comprehensive understanding of cervical remodeling, enhancing the ability to assess PTB risk and informing strategies to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare outcomes. © 2025 SPIE

Many disease processes, including cancerous tumors and burn injuries, induce changes in the structure of tissue. Polarimetric terahertz measurements have the potential to provide new diagnostic markers using Mie scattering patterns. In this work, we present Monte Carlo simulation of Mie scattering of polarized terahertz light for cancerous tumor budding and compare the results to experimental phantom measurements. Additionally, we present a polarization-sensitive scan of an ex vivo porcine burn injury. The experimental phantom results showed contrast between different sizes of polypropylene scattering particles within a gelatin medium for diffuse intensity and degree of polarization measurements. A similar diffuse imaging signal contrast was demonstrated between burned and healthy regions on ex vivo porcine skin. These results show the potential for polarimetric terahertz imaging in detecting structural changes from disease processes. © 2025 SPIE

In this study, we designed a handheld polarized hyperspectral imaging (PHSI) system capable of full Stokes imaging. To enable in vivo utilization, we validated the PHSI system in Intralipid phantoms, ex vivo burned tissues, and various ex vivo organ tissues from mice. A calibration experiment was carried out using a quarter-wave plate and a half-wave plate as samples. The errors introduced by the optical components and the camera were analyzed, respectively. Using a phantom composed of varying concentrations of Intralipid solution and methylene blue as a scattering and absorbing agent, the ability of the probe to detect different levels of light scattering was assessed. Eighteen samples were used with Intralipid concentrations varying from 1 to 12 ml and methylene blue with concentrations from 0 to 4 ml. These trials resulted in a correlated trend between the concentration of the Intralipid solution and the intensity of polarization metrics. Additional validation of the system was conducted on burned ex vivo mouse muscle tissues. The results of burn tissue experiments showed visible differences in burned and non-burned tissue. Finally, images of mouse organs acquired using the probe showed different levels of light scattering, proving that our probe could reveal the structural differences among tissue types. © 2025 SPIE

Mueller matrix (MM) wide-field polarised multi-spectral imaging has emerged as a powerful tool for biomedical applications, including cervical pre-cancer detection. While machine learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have achieved high accuracy in detection, they lack uncertainty estimation crucial for clinical decision-making. We introduce a novel two-stage Gaussian process pipeline that addresses this limitation. Our approach handles partially-labelled MM data, refines predictions using polarimetric features, and provides pixel-wise classification with uncertainty estimates. Qualitative results show competitiveness with or outperformance of CNNs, while crucially offering uncertainty information, enhancing the clinical applicability of polarimetric imaging in cervical pre-cancer detection. This uncertainty quantification enables clinicians to identify cases requiring additional examination or expert consultation, particularly in regions where the model shows low confidence, thereby reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and improving patient care pathways. © 2025 SPIE
