Mobile charging stations (MCSs) play a pivotal role in mitigating charging deserts prevalent in rural areas by offering the flexibility to be transported to desired locations for electric vehicle (EV) charging. MCSs address concerns related to power infrastructure limitations and locational constraints, thereby alleviating range anxiety. Despite this significance, current research exhibits a notable dearth of investigations focusing on off-grid energy storage systems that integrate renewable energy sources and repurpose second-life batteries (SLBs) retired from EVs for EV charging stations (EVCS). While conventional power grid sources are conventionally relied upon for EV charging, further inquiry is imperative to explore the potential of off-grid systems leveraging renewable energy and SLBs. Addressing this research gap holds substantial promise in advancing sustainable EV charging infrastructure. This study endeavors to fill this void by presenting the sizing design and cost analysis of a standalone photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with an SLB bank for EVCS in public parks. The methodology commences by utilizing real-world power demand data collected from Tennessee state park as input and subsequently determining capacity loss based on the selected aging model to decide appropriate battery sizes. Finally, the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) estimation of proposed charging stations inputs for the cost analysis. The results indicate that the proposed SLB -based EVCS can reduce LCC by 32.16%, when compared to the baseline. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors.

The condition of the rotor system remains difficult to assess due to system nonlinearity and noisy measurements. To deal with the problem, we proposed a hierarchical physics-informed neural network (HPINN) to discover the ordinary differential equation (ODE) of a healthy/faulty rotor system from noise measurements and then assess the machine condition based on the discovered ODE. Specifically, the ODE of a healthy rotor system is first stably identified from noise measurement through HPINN guided by rotor dynamics. Based on the identified healthy ODE, the extra fault terms in the ODE of the faulty rotor system are then sparsely regressed from the predefined library embedded in HPINN. 'Moreover, with the mathematical terms of discovered fault, the potential fault and the health indicator (HI) are diagnosed and constructed to assess the condition of the rotor system, respectively. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the data set collected on the circulating water test bench, showing the potential for practical applications. What is the Achilles' heel of academic Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) methods when it comes to application to real aircraft systems? This paper discusses some major and decisive issues that stand in the way of their transition from lab developments and simulations to real life applications in aeronautics. Often underestimated by academics, these issues determine the survivability of a new design for final V&V (Verification & Validation) activities. The paper recalls some practical items that should be considered at the design stage to help reach high Technological Readiness Level (TRL) scales for a given FDI algorithm. Vehicle parameter estimation is an identification problem which is almost exclusively solved with least squares methods. In practical applications, some prerequisites for ordinary least squares are not satisfied, such as the assumption of an error-free regressor and independent and normally distributed noise. In this work, three parameter estimators for dynamic systems are presented which address these problems: a total least squares estimator to deal with regressor errors, and a robust M-type Kalman filter for long-tailed error distributions from the literature are implemented. As the main contribution, a disturbance observer parameter estimator (DOPE) is proposed which observes a disturbance process instead of assuming independent noise in addition to the parameter estimation. The estimators are applied to a mass and friction identification problem for an electric tractor on a large number of experiments. The DOPE has the lowest median estimation error and the lowest sensitivity to bad measurement data. The results show that the disturbance observer is a valuable tool for practical Kalman filter parameter estimation. Copyright (c) 2022 The Authors. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the current work regarding the transfer of smart devices and linked app-based approaches into the industrial application. For this purpose;a generic and manufacturer-independent reference architecture has been developed in order to enable dynamic reconfiguration of intelligent field devices by using modular software applications. Similar to the popular app-based approaches, apps can be downloaded from an App Store and with the help of smart devices installed and executed directly on the field devices. Besides selected results of the prototypical implementation in the SmartFactory(KL), an insight into the ongoing work is presented. The control and risk assessment in complex information systems require to take into account extremes arising from nodes with large node degrees. Various sampling techniques like a Page Hank random walk, a Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain and others serve to collect information a bout the nodes. The paper contributes to the comparison of sampling techniques in complex networks by means of the first hitting time, that is the minimal time required to reach a large node. Both the mean and the distribution of the first hitting time is shown to be determined by the so called extremal index. The latter indicates a dependence measure of extremes and also reflects the cluster structure of the network. The clustering is caused by dependence between nodes and heavy-tailed distributions of their degrees. Based on extreme value theory we estimate the mean and the distribution of the first hitting time and the distribution of node degrees by real data from social networks. We demonstrate the heaviness of the tails of these data using appropriate tools. The same methodology can be applied to other complex networks like peer to-peer telecommunication systems. A novel identification scheme is proposed here for a wide class of nonlinear and highly complex physical systems, including manufacturing ones, which can be modelled using the linear parameter-varying (LPV) approach. The targeted applications include status monitoring, condition-based maintenance and fault diagnosis. In this approach, several operating points, selected over the entire system's operating regime, are used to model the system at each such point, by a linear model such that the set of all such local linear models forms the best approximation of the original nonlinear system. To ensure reliability and accuracy of both the proposed identification scheme and its applications, emulators are included at the output measurements to mimic likely operating scenarios resulting from variations in the subsystems such as the controller, sensor, actuators and plant. At each operating point, data collected from various emulator parameter-perturbed experiments is used to identify-both the system and the influence vectors. The influence vector, a novel concept used here, is used to map the variations of the emulator parameters (and hence those of the subsystems) to the feature vector (transfer function coefficients). At the heart of the system's health monitoring setup used is a Kalman filter which uses its residual to detect a fault and the influence vector to isolate the faulty subsystem The novel use of emulators and influence vectors is shown here to spawn various contributions, namely a generalization of the traditional LPV approach, a new multi-model LPV-based identification scheme, and hence a new health monitoring system based on it, that are both reliable, robust and accurate. The superiority of the performance of the proposed novel identification scheme over that of conventional schemes is shown both analytically and through a successful evaluation on both simulated and physical systems. This paper presents aspects regarding Load Frequency control (LFC) in the Romanian power System, which, considering its characteristics, is a large system. Load Frequency control keeps the balance of the power generation and consumption in a control area in order to maintain an acceptable system frequency. Time models for hydro and thermal generation units used by LFC in the Romanian power System are presented in the paper. These models were obtained using experimental data provided from the system (step response tests). The model parameters were determined using an experimental identification procedure based on the Trust Region Algorithm. Finally, we proposed and tested a simulation diagram for modelling the load dispatch.

As the world is currently facing an energy and climate crisis, the development and utilization of alternative sources of energy has become an important challenge. from all types of renewable energy sources, wind turbines proved to be one of the cleanest and most reliable solutions for energy production. Wind energy conversion systems have in the last decades been subject of a strong interest as they could offer a viable source of electrical energy. This is why, it is important to focus on complex algorithms that meet with multiple objectives such as speed regulation, blade load and mode stabilization with simultaneously maximizing energy capture. This paper starts with a state of the art of wind turbines and their problematic and continues with the presentation of a polynomial control method designed for the third functioning zone of a wind turbine.
